Your math was fine, based on the date this video was uploaded, Angelina would have been 10 but we know this was recorded a few weeks after her 9th birthday. Angelina was already a national treasure, after winning Norway's Got Talent at age 8. At the start of the video we see her writing 'her wishes' for how she wanted to sing this song and the musicians lovingly called her 'the boss'. For me, Angelina is one of the most impressive musical prodigies I know about. For her generation, I only put Alma Deutscher, a classical music composer, as more impressive. Now at age 18, Angelina has told us she has written more than 100 songs and we have been blessed by 12 so far. Her wise and loving family allowed her to enjoy her childhood, even after moving to LA and signing her with Republic Records at age 14. Republic has built her a studio and has yet to promote her.

The only things which exceed Angelina's musical talents are her humility and empathy.

She started studying music theory at 5 or 6 years old! She listens to other artists and incorporates what she has heard into her own music. You could say her teachers were pretty much all the Jazz Queens of old (plus not so old Amy Winehouse), the Queen of Soul and a few guys from back in the day (Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra & Elvis Presley). Otherwise Angelina is self-tough when it comes to her vocal abilities. But that doesn't mean she didn't have any lessons - she attended the Oslo School of music and performance art's after school program since she was five. There she had piano lessons, but more importantly, she studied music theory and learned how to create vocal arrangements. In the latter two she paid very good attention, I think that's the key if you want to understand how such a young person is able to rearrange existing songs from the past with such high skill to the point that it could be considered a new version (Bohemian Rhapsody is a good example). She learned very early on to deconstruct a song down to the core and then reconstruct it according to her singing abilities. But it's not just technique, Angelina's ability to use her voice to convey emotions that touch the heart and soul of the listener and there is no technical explanation for this - it is simply magic. The latter isn't so obvious in "I put a spell on you", but I assure you once you've heard a few more songs of hers you'll understand very quickly what I'm talking about. You are not the first reactor to immediately conclude: such a young child must have parents/grandparents who are singers or musicians - that is not the case here at all! However, her maternal grandmother was a child prodigy herself, albeit in the fields of poetry and painting - which is probably why Angelina's extraordinary talent was recognized so early and encouraged by the family. The comparison with the girls from The Warning couldn't be more apt (even if Angelia started much earlier). Apart from the family network, the Norwegian education system certainly also has a role to play and the willingness there to listen to children and take their ideas seriously. Angelina worked with well-known artists such as Tim Bergling aka Avicii, Alan Walker and Alexander Rybak when she was 9-11 years old and performed as head vocalist with the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra (KORK) as well as with the staff band of the Norwegian Armed Forces (the band, which plays on official occasions for the government and the royal family). It is often said that Angelina's talent is a gift from God or nature - but what is ignored is how much she has worked specifically and consistently on her skills, which is quite unusual for a child of her age. As far as this song (I put a spell on you) is concerned, you can say that Angelina's arrangement is closest to Jay Hawkins' original, also and especially because she carefully modernized the craziest parts (she was nine). Unfortunately, Nina Simone softened the song a lot and many followed this path - e.g. Annie Lenox or Haley Reinhart and CCR has the softest version ever IMHO. She was actually 9y 2m old at the time of this performance, and this is her own arrangement of "I Put a Spell on You", hence the notes to the bandleader prior to the performance. When some months later she was asked about this song, she says it is a story about a "voodoo kind of love". She totally gets it, as shown by the screams, raspiness and squeal that she uses to convey the right emotions. Born Jan 10, 2006 in Oslo Norway. From her audition on Norway’s Got Talent (2014 - age 7 - Gloomy Sunday "Billy Holiday") through the final on America’s Got Talent The Champions (2020 - age 13 - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road "Sir Elton John") and the 130+ videos in between you will not be disappointed. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.

Thank you for discovering Angelina Jordan. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZfaq, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on KZfaq. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. The high pitched whistle register note you mention is actually the only part of the performance a typical 10 year old girl can easily do. It is something that comes to young girls naturally and they lose it as they get older. What is not normal for someone that small is a vocal range that goes that low.

ok... there's much I want to say based on your reaction. First of all, I have been listening / watching almost all of her videos since Dec 2022 when I came across this one. My only regret wished I had a video camera pointing at my face as I watched. It was surreal for me watching a little girl perform this song. Since, I have watched many reactors react and your the first one who actually decided to close your eyes just to listen. Even though it was for only a few seconds. Lol! I watched these many reactions because its fun and entertaining to see the astonishment on their faces. Such a hoot! Many have said if eyes closed it was listening to someone much older and a seasoned veteran singing this song. Comments to couple of your questions. Angelina chose how to sing this song. Growing up, and mostly from her maternal grandmother listening to the jazz greats like Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong... she's been in the recording studio since the age of 5. She won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 7 with 4 amazing performances. My favorite was Bang, Bang. She was on AGT's Champions showing 2020 with 3 performances. It was the first one that sent her star the moon and back, performing cover of Queen's - Bohemian Rhapsody. She received the Golden Buzzer from Heidi. Shortly before this performance there is a beautiful production of her singing Elvis' - "Suspicious Minds" If you listen or react to that one, be ready for that first note! Sometime after this studio recording of IPASOY she covered "How Great Thou Art. Its in my top 10. Just amazing from what vocal range she sings it. Wont give it away as to entice you to watch. She did this song again at 11 years old in Korea, I think, opening for Norah Jones. You could definitely see growth in the one or two years from this version to the live version in Korea.

She is actually using two different types a vibrato in the end,she starts with A diapdramatic Wobble then going to a trill type of hammer vibrato. Which is extremely hard to do. Great reaction.

Just taking care of a one-off request, eh? Well, there goes that plan.🙃 I dare say, you migtht get more different song requests for her than you ever have before for a single artist, based on a single reaction. Angelina has literally _hundreds_ of performances to choose from, and so many of them are absolutely top-notch that there tends to be significant variety in people's requests for reactions to her. That being said, if you had not done this particular music video first, it would have been far and away the most popular request for your next reaction to her. It kind of "stands apart" from almost everything else she's done. You wondered how she would sound singing it "now", or at least when she was older than here. Unfortunately, we know the answer to that question.😉 Some people like this or that subsequent version, but IMO none of them hold a candle (so to speak!) to this one at 9. Because she always tried to follow the same basic vocal arrangement and just pull _way_ back on all the yelling and growling. Which, if you ask me, just _does not work at all_ . This arrangement requires a singer to go "all in", and if you're not going to do that, you choose a totally different arrangement. So, anyway, I will not be recommending any other versions of this particular song. Fortunately, that leaves over 200 other songs to chose from. (I've actually lost count. OK, so, my recommendation (other than just doing a search for her name and looking for just anything that intrigues you) would be "Feeling Good", sung at age 10-almost-11 on a live charity-oriented TV special called _The Stream Gir Tilbake_ [The Stream Gives Back]. The video is on her Official channel (like the one you just reacted to). Her voice was already noticeably more mature sounding. Perhaps not yet that of a full-grown adult, but certainly at least a mid-to-late teen, I'd say. The next time her voice matured significantly was at around 16 (two years ago). Who knows if there will be Yet Another big change coming in the next few years.
