As many times as I have seen this video, I still get the feeling she is telling you, in a very cool (chilling) tone, that you are hers and there is no escape. When you protest, she goes into what others have called her 'Beast Mode', then regains her composure toward the end. I like your observation about assuming the persona of a character. I believe this was her arrangement, and she owned every bit of it.

Great reaction. Of all the versions by all the artists who have covered this song, Angelina stayed the most true to the original Screamin' Jay version. She kept most of the structure and character of the song but smoothed it out, added composition and melody to it and made it a masterpiece of jazz/blues/soul. This was a great tribute to the man - Hawkins.

I really appreciate your analysis of this phenomenal performance by Angelina. Do you know that she speaks several languages. I do not know this from personal experience, but many have pointed this out. There is an explanation: Her father is Swedish, her grandmother is from Iran and her grandfather was from Japan. Sara, Angelina's mother, lived for a time in Japan with her parents. Angelina was born in Norway but has spent part of her upbringing in the United States. Etc .... She has thus heard / practiced the following languages ​​during her upbringing: Norwegian, Swedish, English, Farsi, A little Japanese.

Several points about your comments: yes, it’s a tribute to Screamin Jay. You saw her hold up the candle with his picture. And what you said about Angelina singing it like she’s playing a character? Angelina has the ability to nail so many different genres perfectly. Here, while incorporating some of Hawkins’ vocal oddities, Angelina is giving us authentic old school blues. Close your eyes and it’s a 1940’s or 50’s experienced blues singer killing it in a cigarette and whiskey bar. And, finally as always, it’s still 100% Angelina giving us her own arrangement and showing us that at nine years old, she was destined for greatness. A couple of my favorites: Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road, A Million Years Ago, I’m Still Holding Out for You. All spectacular. Angelina is the best singer I’ve ever heard.

Screamin J and his band were wild because the execs got them drunk, really drunk. Hawkins original intent for this song was for it to be more romantic so I think Angelina wanted to fullfil that for him.

This was my first Angelina video and song and it blew me away, totally, forever. You have a lot more to listen to. She is on a level way above others.

Thanks for continuing your journey of discovery. Yes, Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old in this performance. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and she based her arrangement on his original performance - to my knowledge, she is the only artist to have done so - although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The following list is of things I feel are worth noting in this video. (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) The occasions where Angelina gave silent instructions to the band (f) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (g) The instant transformation from "performer" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I remark on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. You have seen in the comments that Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song" for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the colour of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners

If you watch the original Screamin' Joe Hawkins version, and follow it up with the Nina Simone version, you'll see that Angelina does a really masterful job of bringing elements from each into her expression of the song. When doing covers, she always seems to find a way to pay appropriate homage to the original artist and other iconic versions, while also making each song her own. I give her a lot of credit, but you can tell the team behind her is doing a fantastic job of molding her, as well.
