Great video Alistair. Nice temperament your cows have there, reminds me of the herd of South Devon’s we used to have. A mild bread by nature but how they’re worked makes all the difference. I miss those girls, just sheep and arable now. Anyway, a pleasure watching you work your cattle. Keep at it.

Pretty tame angus cattle. We have some free range angus, here in CA, that are downright mean. My daughter helps out some friends' ranches rounding them up. Most folks use 4 wheelers, but she's a crazy horse lady and rides a 19 hand draft horse to bring them in. She might be a bit nuts, but there's good money in it. My son works on a Nevada ranch with much more tame angus and they're used to being fed and around people. Not too bad for a couple of San Francisco kids, but I guess the breeding comes through, given we came from dairy farmers in Ireland.

Cattle behaviour is largely a reflection of their environment and experiences. Genetic influence is over rated. You can train cattle just like dogs, both good and bad habits. From a cattleman on South Coast of Western Australia.

Great video, would have liked more information on how you dry up the wet spot. Did you air clean the drains and then hook them back up anew? Cheers.

This might sound mental but could you calve the cows earlier? I calve mine in late summer here in Victoria (south Gippy) they have little calves through the winter then the calves get all the good spring grass when they are bit bigger. But winter looks a lot harsher for you.

Intresting concept. Some people do autumn calve but feed is expensive in the winter.

@@kiwifarmernz I havnt perfected it yet 🤣🤣 I just try and have as many mouths on the spring grass putting weight on, then try and sell the calves before Xmas. Dry cows don’t eat much over summer.

Nice and quiet cattle, I think you mentioned ,it but you yard wean your replacements to get them used to the yards? (Just as I made mistake of letting some straight into paddock and they are really flighty) Also how soon after weaning is vaccination for those replacements and drenches etc?
@kiwifarmernz

How good is that concrete pad at the yards. Well done Alistair. Could you have kept those weaners a little longer to put more weight on them
@kiwifarmernz
@kiwifarmernz 26 күн бұрын
@@johnjordan4647 it's a hard call. If I kept them longer they would be really hard to sell as most people would be full , then they will be eating valuable feed used for the winter. I would love to keep them for longer tho
