tysm for this video, as someone coming from blender and trying to learn maya im finding it so frustrating when i run into random glitches in the cycle and without this video i probably wouldve just gone insane haha

Hey Mark- I followed along with this video and learned a TON. You are such an inspiration to me as an animator and its incredible we live in a world where we can access educational content from pros like yourself for free, thank you so much. Walk cycles can be so challenging but I love your workflow here, I find it difficult to build pose to pose but using this spline method makes so much sense and prevents a lot of the popping I was having building pose to pose. I feel a lot more confident in tackling different kinds of walk cycles and make something for my reel. My goal is to be a creature animator like yourself one day, your work is such an inspiration!

Thank you for taking the time to highlight the importance of considering visibility in walk cycles. It's crucial for us at the moment, and adding just a line or two about it can make a significant difference. Walk cycles pose a considerable challenge in animation, and I appreciate someone shedding light on the plight of us animators!

Even though I'm learning Blender's animation side, this is still a fantastic video for learning a walk cycle. Everything pretty much transfers over since Blender basically shares all the features. Doing the animation in even keyframes (4/8/12/16) makes it so much easier to follow along with as well. Also, this is my first time seeing Maya and wow, it's kinda crazy how much easier it is to do certain things in blender. like copy and pasting the value of something vs just hovering over the value and ctrlc. Or gradually increasing a value vs just holding shift. Or making animations cyclic. Mirroring poses. In Blender everything is just a shortcut away and built in. Could just be my unfamiliarity with Maya though. great video

A genuine masterclass. Thank you so much for this in-depth explanation. Your workflow with the geometry cache was really smart and helpful. I used the same rig and it helped me to understand the poses and controller rotations. As a side note, I used Studio Library for saving my poses and its mirror script works better for me.

Thank You. :)

Could you give any insight to how fast an animator in the game industry is supposed to work? Is there a seconds per day quota?

I'm about to just drop Maya completely..I started learning with blender and I just simply dragged and dropped the reference into the viewport and it displayed. None of the reference files work, none of it displays in the viewport. I converted them to several file types and none of them work. I converted them image sequences and it won't show the options to import that. I do some digging and apperantly I need a specific codec??? This stuff should be mentioned. How can a program possibly be this convoluted??? I'm truly baffled by this. It should be so simple, in the video you easily did it. But for some reason it's impossible for me to simply import a reference video. What a motivation killer jesus christ man..

Same! Came to the comments to see if anyone was having the same issues; I followed the in-video steps (View > Image Plane > Import Movie) and it imports as a thin line no matter which viewport I'm in (even in Persp view, when I tumble around it remains a useless line). I've spent more time trying to troubleshoot this than on the scene itself and it's so annoying -_- If anyone has a fix, please let us know!

Try in an orthographic view when importing reference, Maya is a pain at times but it is a great program and there is a reason why we use it in the industry today.
