This wasn't Joan Crawford against Bette Davis. It was Joan Crawford against Hollywood! She made them understand that she couldn't be ignored and she stole the show. However, we should talk about Anne! She was magnificent and deserved the oscar🙌🏻
@valsainking
@valsainking 8 ай бұрын
Beautifully written! She indeed stole the show and then some.. In fact, no woman of her generation ever looked better at that age. She defied the laws of physics and Anne 100 deserved that Oscar of course, and may I say: she couldn't have asked for a classier or more gorgeous silver screen icon to accept it on her behalf than the one and only Joan Crawford. Timeless Oscar moment for the ages and makes up in a big way for Joan's own Oscar acceptance moment in 1946, which she was unfortunately too ill to attend.

No...not very low. Joan obviously didn't want Bette to win, but she should have been nominated for Best Actress that year as well, even if it was to lose to Bette Davis. 2 Hollywood legends playing both leads in a movie late in their career. Both doing an incredible job. Everyone knowing about their rivalry, and one of them is tossed aside in the nominations. THAT is very low!! I think that was her way of saying fuck you to both Davis and Hollywood! And good for her. She's amazing!

The Oscars were always about favoritism and still is at these days, I'm even willing to say that now at days they give them like candies to anyone for payola. It was never their intention to give DiCaprio an Oscar for example but with the pressure of the public and his nomination there was no more delay. The Oscars are drawing everytime less people into watching them being deemed now at days a "tv show award for old people and to check who was best and worst dressed". Sad really.

+ramio1983 According to Bette and Joan The Divine Feud: Joan stood instantly erect, shoulders back, neck straight, head up. @@Mandystesia Crawford was only in her mid to late 50s in this video (she kept her year of birth a secret). Lange was 68 when Feud came out. Crawford also used to starve herself to stay thin. Luckily for Lange, Ryan Murphy didn’t try to make her starve herself for that role. So, while I agree that Crawford looked a lot better, I think it’s a bit cruel to call Lange “haggard” :/

@MrHenrytheoctopus
@MrHenrytheoctopus 2 жыл бұрын
@@1953childstar 1904 is unconfirmed. Basically she used to say she was born 1908, but her grandma told someone once that she was born in 1904, so either Joan was lying or her grandma was incorrect. Most people tend to assume she was lying, though, as most actresses would lie about their age back then. But, there's no confirmed source, and I don't think it matters all that much anyway. Point is she was at least a decade younger than Lange at point of filming. And she didn't take good care of herself, as you've said, there was the smoking and the drinking which really shouldn't be written off as "everyone was doing it" it wasn't killing her any less just because it was popular, she also used to starve herself (according to those around her, and hinted at in her book), and she even had 6 of her teeth removed to keep her face looking thin. All of this was very common back then, but it's still irresponsible to claim that she "took care of herself", she took care of her appearance at the expense of her health. Also, Crawford only ever adopted children, in order to make sure her body kept shape, I'm pretty sure Lange's three kids are all biological. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, I just didn't mention it in my first comment and thought it was interesting. I have nothing against Crawford, she was indeed very beautiful, and that's all she wanted. But it's irresponsible to imply that she was taking care of herself, she knew her decisions were shortening her life, and it's important that we understand that too.

Oh my gosh, yes! While the two stars were victims of a male driven Hollywood, I feel that that show is really playing that aspect out. I've seen other things too that bug me. One is that they quote Katharine Hepburn as being a year older than Davis. At that time, Katharine was still using her birthday of 8 Nov (her older brother who died birthday) 1909. It wouldn't be until the early 90's she came clean that it was 12 May 1907. Davis also didn't turn down Mildred Pierce because the character was a mother to a teenager--she took the Corn is Green instead and insisted that they make her old since the character was older. The show keeps driving the point that Davis was about the part and not vanity, yet then they make that claim. Another issue is that B.D. was never a bombshell like she's being portrayed. That affair bit is really driving me nuts though. That's such a big thing to just make up. The sad thing is, people who just see the show will believe it. I read that Ryan Murphy wanted to show that women over 50 can still be sexual--Golden Girls has already tackled that! Haha

I know right, and it's such a shame given her reasoning behind the Oscar which was Anne's performance in the Miracle Worker. Which is a testament and story to people with disabilities that they can do anything and that nothing should hold them back. Not to mention the story is based on that of Helen Keller who was one of the greatest icons and idols for people with disabilities. It also shows to people mentoring others with disabilities to never give up on them no matter how hard it may seem.

sigmund grizli I’m a great fan of Bette Davis, but I’ve no idea what possessed her to think she deserved an Oscar more than Anne Bancroft. Bancroft gave a poignant, nuanced, heartbreaking performance as Ann Sullivan. Davis chewed up the scenery, and gave a one-note performance as a crazed harridan. Davis certainly deserved her Oscars, and she should’ve won for The Letter, The Little Foxes, and All About Eve. But Baby Jane? No way.

I love the attention to detail in "Feud: Bette & Joan". Notice how after Joan presents for Best Director the camera follows her as she flows from one room to another and another in endless succession. In the background you hear all the original you see here on stage, where Sinatra cracks the joke about the three nights at the Sands in Vegas, etc.

As much as we enjoy all the savagery between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, can't we just for a moment appreciate Anne Bancroft's performance in The Miracle Worker? Bancroft did a fabulous job in the movie and definitely deserved this win. In my opinion, she is underrated as an actress, even though she's one of the few actresses to win an Oscar (one for her win here as Best Actress with several more nominations in the same category), a Tony (twice), and an Emmy. She was also great in several of her husband's (Mel Brooks) films. I would've thought that Bancroft would get more recognition from people.

I think Bancroft will get a lot of recognition this December when THE GRADUATE celebrates it 50th anniversary. Released four months after another seminal film, BONNIE AND CLYDE, both films helped to usher in the New Hollywood and changed American cinema forever. B&C got a lot of media attention this summer, so I suspect the same will happen with TG in the winter.

Make no mistake: Bancroft deserved 100% of that Oscar. Davis was just a tacky old sore loser for even suggesting it should've gone to her instead. I mean, Jesus Christ, who would be so classless as to dare say such a miserably selfish and grotesquely rude thing out loud? Well, Davis of course. I'm only sorry the beautiful and talented Miss Bancroft had to suffer through Davis' vulgar self-centeredness all those years just because she wasn't mature enough to accept reality and get the f over it!

I agree with you. My first impression when Joan Crawford walked out, honestly, was "Hollywood royalty." Yeah, she shimmered, and was wearing diamonds, but by this period she totally merited having this look...she had been in the movies for nearly 40 years here. "Mommie Dearest" just maligned her reputation in the eyes of a lot of people (which brilliant as Faye Dunaway was in that movie -- at conveying emotion that is -- I don't believe for one second that Crawford was ever that crazy or scary). I admire Crawford really, because she came from VERY humble beginnings to achieve what she did in her life and her career. Whereas, someone like Katharine Hepburn, came from a life of wealth and privilege. I'm not saying that Kate didn't have talent (because at her best, she was a gifted actress), or that she didn't work hard, but it's WAY harder for someone to become something when they come from nothing.

I didn't compare the two of them in regard to talent. I think that Katharine Hepburn was definitely a better actress than Crawford. Well...she was better than Davis, too...but I digress. But, yes, Crawford, at her best, turned in fine work as an actress. So, anyone saying otherwise is just ignorantly stating so without having prior watched any of her work...her best work, that is. What I said in my prior post (and I stated it all rather explicitly so there should have been no confusion) is that I admire what Crawford was able to accomplish in her life considering that she came from a life of poverty and incredible hardship. And, like it or not, IT IS A REMARKABLE FEAT. As I said, it's MUCH easier for someone with wealth, a name, connections, etc. to achieve success and attain this amazing life when they have such attributes in their corner. (Side note: I admire Hepburn's talent as an actress, but she was obviously no saint. It's no secret that she carried on an affair with a married man for over 25 years. So, if you're referencing Hepburn's character in relation to Crawford's, Hepburn was not lily white).
@loveanimals6981
@loveanimals6981 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'm familiar with the "wife knew about the relationship between the two of them and was fine with it" story. Or "their son was disabled" one. Or that "Tracy being Catholic, he couldn't divorce." But I've always had a feeling that the reality of his wife completely accepting their relationship is not altogether accurate. I mean, people are human, and I know that most women are not just going to be completely fine with their husband sleeping with another woman. And this way of thinking was probably all the more rare during that period and with a more conservative belief system in place. I also find it curious how people are willing to overlook the imperfections and indiscretions of, for example, Hepburn, and they run certain other celebrities -- I'm referring to Crawford, of course -- into the ground.
