Three times Oscar winner Jack Nicholson dedicated his winning to Robert Mitchum, and the Academy never gave Mitchum an honorary Oscar, and didn't gave him an award for The Night of the Hunter in 1955. Shame on the Academy!

Good Lord that had to have been one of the most incredible Oscar's ceremonies of all time. I've been a Cinephile since I was about 12 officially and I'm 40 now. Had I been born just a few years earlier I would have experienced so much awesomeness not only cinema wise but musically as well. However I'm pretty sure I got the last truly great decade so I'll take what I can get!

What a performance by Jack Nicholson. Helen Hunt was amazing as well. Just a great film all around. Jim Brooks figured out a way to make a film about mental illness a very serious subject I say from experience enjoyable with tears and laughs great performances and wonderful music. 1. Duvall - transformative performance; 1997 critics' fave for Best Leading Actor 2. Fonda - echoes of father Henry; understated yet great 3. Hoffman - committed performance 4. Nicholson - can do this in his sleep; the role is interesting though 5. Damon - discovery of 1997 Hollywood film year despite having been acting for several years (including 1996's Courage Under Fire)

Listen to the announcer. As if anybody in the audience needed to know that. At the end of the day, the Academy Awards is a tv show. If there’s anything wrong with it, if there’s anything foundational to its failings, it’s this.
