This is a good topic in photography that is not touched on well enough. Our heroes in photography (and modeling as well) made mistakes we'd consider unthinkable for ourselves. They got themselves into ugly situations due to awful clients, bad communication (or lack thereof), ugly editing, an awful concept, etc. But these are things photographers and models alike find in their careers, and the best thing we can do is learn from them. I'd like to see more videos on this topic. Thank you MODEL GENE for sharing words on this topic.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! It is easy to say something is bad, but I think a lot can be gained by analyzing what makes it bad.

It depends about the budget as well that you forgot to mention . We use to say in our country with money you can do a road in the sea .

Hi Mario, thanks for your comment. I didn't mention the budget because I truly do not believe that is the problem here. Booking someone as famous as Annie Leibovitz means they were willing to spend a lot, whereas the editorial with Kate Moss would have a fraction of the budget available. If you haven't seen the documentary I made on Annie, I show how fantastic her early work was when it was just her on a tour bus with a little camera. Money can help, but only when the vision is strong and clear.

Ever since Annie Leibovitz got herself into financial difficulties indulging some nostalgic 1950s era dream of making an integrated nesting site / work space / business offices out of several side-by-side outrageously expensive Manhattan brownstones she’s had to sell the rights to her old work at one point, publish some ill-advised new “artistic” work of questionable merit (in the publishing world back in the fifties they’da been called “pot-boilers) … and agreed to be art-directed by clients such as this one here with these rather on-the-nose “Italian” images of Romulus and Remus for espresso and the nude model in a giant plate of spaghetti. Note to self … if I ever get successful enough to be tempted to make terrible decisions about fancy self-indulgent live-work studio space in Manhattan that requires the wealth of Croesus to realize … DON’T.

I have trouble reconciling the excellence of her early work with something like this shoot but I guess photography means something different to her now.

Those two things seem to be the biggest problems for successful photographers. I think some of her work is fantastic, but it seems to have gotten worse instead of better with time.

I love, really love, her early work is a milestone in the story of photography, but now it’s no more photography, just illustration. Thank you for your work Mark, I love it.

Exactly, and that is a big part of the problem. It’s her name on the images so she is responsible for the final outcome.

Astute commentary, though the concepts are so dreadful they don't deserve that level of scrutiny. Astonishing how someone renowned for brilliance could have gone so badly off the rails. (Though, if I recall, there was a fairly recent Vanity Fair group cover image of hers that featured an errant limb.)

As unpopular it is at the moment, I don’t believe in deifying famous people, and Annie’s incredible contributions to photography do not mean she is always producing excellence. The many limbs of VF(Oprah and Reese Witherspoon) were unfortunate and avoidable.

Yes they are badly produced. Not much intergrity left in any of those. Funny how overmanned teams can produce such poor quality when with htose budgets that should simply not happen. Mert and Marcus David delaChapelle can do conceptually dervived Photoshopped scenes whith reason, Annie just saw money. Art and commerce can live togother, but it has to have agreement on both calls.

Absolutely, I think the difference is the use of photoshop as a tool rather than a crutch. I’m working on a video specifically about color grading in fashion photography and I talk about M&M as well as Leibovitz.

The biggest thing you fail here is that when you’re talking about her photos, you’re also linking that she herself does her own editing and compositing! i see where you are coming from as to picking apart bad composite editing but shoot the editor(s) and those with final say to go to print… NOT the photographer!! just say’n ~ ✌🏼

Hello Andrea, thank you for your comment but I at no point claimed that Annie herself edited the photos, BUT she is 100% responsible for the final outcome. Annie is the most famous photographer in the world, Lavazza paid a hefty sum to use her name and associate their brand with her history of photography, so there is no way they would use images that did not get her approval. Annie frequently uses Box studios as her retouchers, not in this case, but the photographer bares responsibility for anything with their name on it. If you can applaud a photographer when it is good, then you should be able to criticize them when the photography is bad. If you are a fan of Leibovitz, you can check out the documentary style video I made about her, I think you will enjoy other videos on this channel.

@@THEMODELGENE ok, fair enough! if indeed Annie approved and had final yay / nay on those edited images then i was wrong in my past knowledge that she did not have much to do with final image output after photo was taken & passed off to editor(s) and, eeew! i do agree 100% with you as to those final composites looking overdone and pretty much 😝yuk!! horrible! 😒 No bueno for sure … Annie should know better than to let that type of work be released! my apologies to you🫵🏼 i will edit my comment on the “waste of time vid” 😌 👉🏼🍳egg on my 🥹face

@@THEMODELGENE ok, i will just have to take your word on it as to Annie having final approval on those images in your vid. I guess i am the wrong one in this circumstance & apologize! - As far as i knew, the companies that hire her were given the ‘ok’ to put together their vision for their brand / advertisement when her original image is taken. So now with the info you present as she has final-final after edits are done, then YuuuuK! i agree 100% with you that the finished product is Blaaah horrible!! and the editor(s) should be sent back to editing school 😄😅 - truly awful and surprised that Annie thought they looked ok to release!!! 😵🤯☹️

This was a money job and nothing else, if she cared, everything would be different, from the casting to the post production. When I worked at Jed Root, I saw how involved the photographers are with the final images, and the revisions when they weren't happy with the retouching. She had bills to pay! Even with the criticism, and I often criticize the retouching of her photos, I still think she produced some incredible imagery during her lifetime. @@andreak4280
