One of the main reasons the Beaufighter never got the reputation it deserved in the European theater was due to it's size, and the space within the airframe that size allowed. Being a Big Boi, there was space for the first generation of airborne radar equipment to be carried, which led to the Beau being the first truly effective night-fighter in the Allied air fleet. This led to many of the Beau's greatest victories being largely unknown, both due to being very, VERY classified (airborne radar? What's that?), and kinda ungentlemanly (shooting planes that can't see you? That's just not cricket!). Heck, the Beau was so good at this job, that the British MoD had to come up with the myth of Carrots improving your night vision as a cover for the Beaufighter's radar... Elsewhere in the world, the Beau was much more visible, and gained a much higher reputation as a result - the Australians love the Beau, as it had the range to get where it was needed, the dakka to make a real mess of what it was aimed at, and the reliability to get home with some surprisingly large holes in it. Only in Europe did the Beau sneak under the radar of public notice, ironically BECAUSE of it's radar. Secret weapons only work when they're a SECRET, so the Beau's biggest successes were never publicized...

I don't think many people know that that the P-51 Mustang had a dive bomber cousin, the A-36. Not many were made but they did see action in Italy and were very underrated attack planes.

Technically, the P-51 in American service was a derivative of the A-36… (The P-51B was an A-36 without the dive brakes or flaps). The really obscure Mustang variant was the F-6.

The Mustang seems like it ironically would be too fast for dive bombing (imagine the much faster P-51H variant with dive brakes attempting to do the same). Heck, one during testing didn't have its dive brakes on and its wings ripped off from the force. Ultimately, though, the US military basically allowed for these things to disappear over time mainly due to the funding not being allocated for the A-36 Mustang all that much. Of course, the fact these were razor-back styled and not bubble canopy styled also doesn't help much. I'd prefer to use a Hawker Typhoon or the Thunderbolt 1 for ground attacks.

Love the Beaufighter - it's been one of my favorites for years. It was one of three military variants that stemmed from a newspaper magnate's 1934 request for a fast executive transport that performed way better than expected (the design speed was 240 mph; it topped 300 mph in Air Ministry tests). The Blenheim bomber and Beaufort torpedo plane were the other two and neither did all that well, but the Beaufighter was quite successful as a night fighter and daytime destroyer. It may not have been the most maneuverable plane in the skies, but the thing had enough firepower to cut most German and Japanese planes to ribbons very quickly. So dangerous was the Beaufighter that Luftwaffe pilots feared it even 500 miles out in the Atlantic. One of the things many people don't realize is that by war's end the Japanese had a few really good fighters that could hold their own with our front-line fighters - in addition to the Ki-100, the Ki-84 "Frank" and N1K-J "George" were formidable adversaries in the hands of a skilled pilot.

All of the 5 Series (DB 605 engined) were good aircraft. The RE 2005 lost most of the few in service in Sicily on airfields. The M.C. 205 was used to the end with many M.C. 202’s up engined with the DB 605. Some served with the Royal Egyptian Air Force. Israel took that as a threat and saboteurs attacked the factory in northern Italy. Many of the engineers for PZL in Poland escaped to other countries. Those in Romania helped to build the IAR 80 that has the basic fuselage of a PZL P.24, but was low winged.

Great next chapter! My personal favourites are Yak-3 and Ki-100... but when it comes to "WW2 unsung heroes" 2 planes immediately comes to my mind: Fiesler Storch and Po-2. My uncle, albeit being a fighter pilot (György Balikó, Hungarian Air Force, Yak-9P, Mig-15) flew both "Stork' and 'Podva' and always praised their ruggedness, versatility, docile handling, let alone how overloaded they could fly in spite of not-the-strongest engines... how they could take off and land 'on a handkerchief'... so he has became an agriculture pilot. 'Worm-bomber' as he would put it.

If you mention the N1K1-J in a future part to this series, you'll also have to mention the N1K2-J and N1K2-ja. They are basically both better versions of the N1K1J and in my opinion also look better than the Mitsubishi Zero. All three of them were powered by the Nakajima Homare engine; temperamental due to Japan being in a desperate situation but still could rival the engine of the Hellcat. By the way, there was a float-plane version of the N1K1-J that didn't have the J designation. It wasn't nearly as good as its ground based variant and ultimately they couldn't find a purpose for the float-plane version. Not to mention it was powered by the larger Mitsubishi MK4C Kasei 13 instead.

In IJNAF designations, the first three characters never changed. The first letter identified its role, here 'N' signified a floatplane fighter. The next number showed how many of that type came before, the '1' signified it was the first of its kind. The next letter indicated the maker, here, Kawanishi. The next number showed how many variants of the type there were. The N1K fighter only had two, the -1 and -2. When the Japanese repurposed a plane, rather than change the initial letter, they added the relevant letter designation at the end, 'J' designating a land-based naval fighter (e.g. the J3M Raiden). You can see that in the A6M2-N: A - carrier fighter; 6 - the sixth of that type; M - Mitsubishi; 2 - the second variant of the Reisen; -N - its repurposing as a floatplane fighter. Another example: H8K2-L. From left to right - flying boat (probably the best of the war); eighth in the series; Kawanishi; 2nd variant; repurposed as a cargo plane. The book you want to look for is 'Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War' by René J. Francillon, perhaps the most comprehensive book on the subject. www.amazon.com/Japanese-Aircraft-Pacific-Rene-Francillon/dp/087021313X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=895AJ5KU5TGJ&keywords=japanese+aircraft+of+the+pacific+war&qid=1704606941&s=books&sprefix=Japanese+Aircraft+of+the+Pacific+War%2Cstripbooks-intl-ship%2C1382&sr=1-1

I feel that'd be better suited for a Cold War list involving aircraft not talked about too much. The Shooting Star saw success in the very early part of the Korean War. Speaking of the Korean War, the F-84G Thunderjet deserves credit for being an anti-ground heavy-lifter. Akin to being the Thunderbolt 1 of the early Cold War; though obviously not as tanky with the hull.

Beaufighters also flew with the USAAF. In Australian service, the Beaufighter's six wing-mounted 0.303" machine guns were replaced with four 0.50" MGs, and coupled with their four nose-mounted 20mm cannons, gave them incredible firepower. And yes, they were heavy, but they were very strong, which allowed them to absorb phenomenal damage, an essential quality in a ground-attack aircraft.

Northrop was designing flying wing aircraft from the 1920’s. He had several prototypes flying during WWII. Then there was his Flying Wing XB-35 post war. The stability problems would continue until with the B-2 program because computer assistance was required for stability. Engineers brought Jack Northrop to see the test flying of the B-2, as an honor to his forward thinking.

I'd be interested in seeing the B-18 Bolo. I'm not sure it counts, as it was introduced in 1936, before the war. It was a militarized version of the Douglas DC-2. It was intended to be a heavy bomber, but was considered obsolete in this role by the time the war got going. It was instead used for anti-submarine, coastal patrol, and home defense roles, at least until the B-24 came around as a better submarine destroyer, after which, they were used for training. After the war, most were sold as military surplus and converted for cargo transport or crop dusting roles. Five are preserved, while a sixth is known to exist, still at its crash site. There's also the B-23 Dragon, which was developed from the B-18, but there's really not much to say about it. Another one is the PBY Catalina, which is often mentioned, but rarely actually talked about. If you choose only one of these aircraft, I'd suggest this one.

Handley Page HP54 Harrow itself wasn't so much a failure, but it was abandoned for its intended purpose and instead that role was partly fulfilled by the similar looking Armstrong Whitworth Whitley. Of course, Handley Page would go on to create the rather interesting Hampden and the better Halifax. Ultimately, both the Harrow and Albermarle were more successful for transporting.
@SAHBfan
@SAHBfan 6 ай бұрын
I believe the rationale behind the Albermarle was that it didn’t use aluminium or aluminium alloy. It was intentionally designed so it could still be manufactured if there was a shortage of materials - I believe the airframe used a lot of steel, hence the weight issue and its not so good performance as a bomber, but it was also extremely strong and rugged and had a tricycle undercarriage which made it useful for target / glider towing and operating out of less than ideal airfields.

11:40 Interesting question actually. Of course the Japanese did not write Ki or Kee or Kai or whatever, but a katakana. Katakana and hiragana are the two Japanese syllable alphabets. This one (accd. to Wikipedia) looks somewhat similar to a Lorraine cross and is usually transscribed as "ki", but that by itself doesn't necessarily mean that it's pronounced either way. A look into the transcriptions rules finally shows that it rhymes with "me". "Kai" is sometimes seen with other military equipment, I think it means something like "improved".

It's pronounced the same way as "key", being a single letter in one of the two Japanese alphabets (which technically are actually syllabylaries). The term "kai" is something altogether different, used to denote "modified" designs.

So what engine was in the Yak 3? Was low weight achieved by loss of armour? The Westland usage of metal seems like it was not correctly designed.

Another flying boat from the US that should be mentioned is the PBM Mariner. The least Catalina is acknowledged for its rescue operations. As for the successor of the Mariner; Martin P5M Marlin, that would be suited for a Cold War version of the list.

So you mentioned the Ki-63 Hien or Tony. I feel that fighter is criminally underrated being overshadowed by the Zero, Oscar, Frank, and George. Its an oddball being it has a inline liquid cooled engine when nearly all the other fighters had radial engines.

Sorry buddy, KI is pronounced 'KEY', you're pronouncing 'KAI'. But yeah, it isn't a big deal, but as a fellow lover of WW planes AND all kinds of history in general AND a serious student of Japanese language and culture for the past 35 years, I can't let online mispronunciations slip by. You should see my comments on the the anime forums where these young know it all nerds have such bad pronunciation that I can't even tell what they are trying to say in Japanese sometimes (this is why you should never watch English dubs, they always cut out important stuff and twist meanings) Anyhoots, loved the 1st top 5 forgotten WWII plane video (that's how I became your subscriber) and this one too:) I will click on anything that talks about WWII planes- happy memories of making model planes in the 70's & 80's.

Have to disagree with the Whirlwind. Great idea, poor execution due to Government interference. It created an aircraft that was a significantly greater risk for the pilot to fly, and an inferior service aircraft that struggled to meet mission requirements, both due to unreliability.

As mentioned below Ki- is pronounced Kee. It's a short form of 'Kitai', meaning 'airframe', with the numbers simply handed out as each new design, regardless of its mission, came out. It didn't matter if it entered service or not. It was also strictly an IJAAF designation. By saying KAI (rhymes with 'sky'), you're using an actual designation used by the IJAAF. Short for 'Kaizō', it referred to a modification to the original airframe. Thus you have the Ki-61-II, prototype for the second model, and the Ki-61-II-KAI, modified prototypes of the second model. Pronouncing 'KawasakEE' correctly should have given you a hint as to pronouncing 'Ki'. As a retired language teacher, having a loooong interest in Japanese aircraft of WWII and before and having lived in Japan for 38+ years, I'm hard-wired to catch these things. Also, I'm a total WWII aircraft geek and am well acquainted with all the planes mentioned. The Beaufighter is my #1 fave. It could do it all.
