how do you prevent the caps on the bottom from falling off when heating the board from the bottom? or is the surface tension strong enough to keep them in place?

Surface tension is generally strong enough to keep them in place. I've had a few occasions where they fall off but it's very rare

Why didn't you measure the cap value before installing? You could just keep a book of hand drawn images of the values of smd at frequent areas like southbridge, wifi, hdmi port etc. You won't need to depend on donor boards then. 👍

Yeah that's definitely something I need to do soon. Problem is my LCR tweezers aren't the best so I need to invest in some better test equipment to be able to get accurate values of capacitors

You almost cost me a keyboard when that rogue cap went walkabout, lol. I was drinking coffee when I heard "bye bye". Yet another outstanding job, sir. As if we should expect anything less though right? If companies would just stop using the cheapest components they can get a hold of this kind of thing wouldn't happen nearly as much. I understand cutting costs to lower the prices for customers, but this seems more like trying to expand their profit margin rather than passing the savings on to customers. Shameful when you're talking about a multi-billion dollar company like Sony.

Have you found any diagrams saying what the parts are on the power supply or there part numbers? I have one here that I cannot find what's wrong on it yet.

I never quite understand why the AC adapter they use a decent thickness of cable coming into the ADC, 100-240V @ 2.5A transforming it down to 20V @ 10A, then using a tiny cable into say a laptop or whatever. I get that the power is a third P = VI, but the current is higher, so why use a smaller wire, and ALWAYS these wires twist and bend, so that tells me the wire is too small. They should at least use the same size of wire coming into the AC adapter or maybe larger since the current is 4 times larger no? Anyway I might have to go look at my old Electronics books that are THICK with dust, been FAR too long since Ive looked at those, you forget real fast...or maybe I'm just getting old and forgetful lol 😂 ✌🏽

You should measure the donors fine capacitors and make some type of guide to know which capacitor you should purchase nope? Or even if they are the same in other part of the board

No need really. Unless the cap is used in some analog circuitry as a compensator, filter, or similar, it is more than likely a decoupling cap at 100nF. If it's a small cap 0402 and below, it's very safe to assume this. If it's a beefier SMD cap, it might be in the 1-10uF range. As far the voltage rating and technology : always go for MLCC caps at as high voltage rating as you can get at the same capacitance, 50V and above. In a nutshell, higher voltage rating at the same cap equates a more expensive but better performance cap. The ones that usually fail on low profit margin boards like laptops and game consoles are cheap, low voltage rating caps chosen at almost exact working voltage.

I do think I need to start mapping out some of these circuits to be honest. But if I couldn't find one on a donor I'd just throw something in the 100nf to 1uf range on and it would work perfectly fine 😉

Microsoft said they are losing between 100 to 200 dollars per Series X console they sell, Sony said they make a profit on every PS5 sold. Says it all.

I bought a PS3 that came from New Jersey and it was full of roaches. I put it in a bag and put it in the freezer for 6 days. Pulled it out and took it apart. Within 15 minutes them things were coming back to life. You can't kill them.

Try putting it in a trash bag and put high concentration alcohol on each side of the console and all over the bag, tie it up and tape up the hole and leave for about 2 days. Will smother them all

I don't see the benefit of using hot air to solder a cap to a board when you have to go back and touch it up with a soldering iron (plus the added risk of blowing the cap into space (!) and or causing damage to surrounding SMDs). I've been micro-soldering for about 10 years now and find using hot tweezers or a soldering iron the most efficient and tidiest way of replacing 201s, 402 packages etc.
