I like the shower pan template idea. A little tougher with a round drain if someone wants one but I'll have to give it a try. When I build a niche I frame a large opening and cut the hole once I'm at the course below the niche. I add whatever blocking is necessary and waterproof it. This way I can make the niche fit the courses of tile perfectly with no small cuts above or below it.

Yes, definitely tough with a round drain grate and that's another good way to install full tiles up to the niche!

I like the template. Do you always use 1/2” notch for foam pans?

Yes, we mostly use 1/2" and back butter. The more thinny the better

where does the water go when u got a leak from the sink/ toilet???? Can`t see ane drain on the floor outside of the shower.

Never do we install drains on residential bathrooms, that's commercial only. You have big problems if your toilet has a bad leak.

We usually install a new drain and p-trap and center for our build.

It comes pre sloped from the factory it's cast with a slope

You measure the exact drain location and cut the shower tray down to fit

By code are you allowed to frame a niche to an exterior wall? Not in my city ? Grout will crack over time

We do it all the time with no problems. The weather is around 60's and 70's year round though.

pre cutting shower floors is nice to see. so many times i see guys slamming sheets down first, then they have all there cuts to do while the thin set is drying up, or they just spread thin set sheet to sheet, spreading multiple times, which makes me cringe. no reason to not pre cut shower floors first and spread all in one shot, its the right way to do it. when pre cutting , just make sure you center the cuts and remember that the walls are going to add about 1/2 inch, so one needs to center with that 1/2 in mind
