Speed adjustment on the dewalt planer doesn’t change the speed of the cutter head/knives. It changes the feed rate of your material. Love that planer!

As usual, you’re right on target w/ your picks. My favorite Dewalt tool is the MBF Radial Arm Saw. Even though mine is almost 70 years old, it still works as it should, and is super accurate; additionally, you can still find parts, accessories & upgrades for it. My understanding is that this is the tool that put Dewalt on the pro tools map.

Yes, the planer is by far the best tool Dewalt makes. The two “speeds” do not change the blade speed, it changes the feed speed. And the helical head is an absolute must have. Total game changer. You can plane end grain. I’ll say it again. End grain, baby.

Good video, and you nailed all of my favorites. One note: I'm sure it's been said, but you can't understate the value add from the shadow line on the XPS miter saw. Absolute game changer for literally every application. I was skeptical myself, but once I upgraded, I don't know how I lived without it.

I have been a woodworker/trim guy/Formica guy for many years so most of my tools are old as well. I do have a Dewalt planer but it's the old 733 2 knife model. It still works great and with sharp knives planes really nice. I have an old plunge router, too. Excellent router. My job site slide miter saw is a Hitachi 8 1/2" but have used the Dewalt 12" for years. It's probably the most accurate saw I have had my hands on. That table saw is super accurate, too. As for cordless...mine is all Makita but if it wasn't I would go with Dewalt. Great review!

15:35 The DeWalt DWS 780 is essentially a trim carpenter’s miter saw. The shadow line is the most obvious upgrade. However, it also has stops for dual bevel miter setups and is slightly lighter due to better electrical system uses. Those things save time and money as a production carpenter.

Had the 734 planer. It worked great for nearly 15 years. Sold it to a friend and bought a 15” helical floor model. Have the DWS 780. The light upgrade in my opinion is definitely worth the extra cost. Way better than a laser which I had before

So i just ordered the 735x after i saw your deal alert. Just happened to the have the money for the head as well. The only thing I am doing a little different is the DRO. I like the wixey DRO vice the igauging. The wixey uses AAA and the display is easier to see due to the angle. Pretty excited to get it set up and put it to work. My shop is only 160 sqft so space is not something I have much of.

This is a very solid list Matt. The only way that this gets nip picked is by a color loyal tool enthusiast. The mitre saw is arguably the most commonly used saw on job sites. Both by framers as well as finish carpenters. I will say though the DWS 780 has a lot of additional crown molding settings. I’ll throw another awesome tool into the mix here. The DCF601 brushless 12v screwdriver. This thing is awesome and I think the only one even close to this one is Bosch’s version of this. God bless brother.

There's also the DNP612 plunge base that fits both the corded and cordless versions of the trim routers, so if you're a limited space setup for small projects you can squeeze even more functionality out of just a cordless trim router. They also just launched a new 2-1/4 HP cordless dedicated plunge router you should check out. My Dad has the version of the miter saw with the shadow line, it's fantastic, perfect projection of the blade kerf even in bright sunlight with no calibration needed, so it's better than laser-based systems.

1. Totally agree; great planer. The "gold standard" of benchtop planers, as far as I'm concerned. 2. I have both the corded full size and palm size router (also corded; with a fixed and plunge base) from Dewalt. I love both of them. They came with great accessories, are very easy to adjust, and easy to swap between the fixed and plunge base. Both sizes are more than powerful enough to do everything I want and the soft start makes them easy to use freehand. 3. Dewalt's cordless drill and driver are perfectly fine, but I don't think I would've picked these as their "Top 5" because they aren't really a special or better offering than a number of competitors, in my opinion. (full disclosure, I'm a Milwaukee guy when it comes to cordless tools; I just think their motor and battery tech sets them apart from the competition). 4. That table saw is in a portability/accuracy/feature/cost class of its own and is a great offering from Dewalt. Good choice. 5. I have the 780 with the shadow line. I agree that I wouldn't buy the 780 if I already had the 779, but for anyone trying to choose between the two, the shadow line is definitely worth having, in my opinion. My 780 miter saw is the only reason I've never bothered to build a crosscut sled for my table saw yet. I've just never needed one so far because my 780 miter saw is so flipping accurate! The only thing that I wish was different about it is the space it requires. With the more "traditional" sliding rails, it takes up A LOT of space sticking out from the wall in my shop. If I were to do it over again, I might consider the Bosch with those fancy "elbows" that let you put it right against the wall. Still, if feels like the Bosch is a hair for flexy than my Dewalt, so might be just a tiny bit less accurate. I have the space, so I'm keeping my Dewalt 780! 🙂 The right-angle drive should have supplanted the drill/driver in the top 5, I think. Dewalt isn't the only company that makes something like that, but I think most folks agree that they make the best one.

Another important note for the table saw: the 8 1/4 cannot accept a full dado stack. I'm pretty sure the 10 inch version can. You can use part of a dado stack on the smaller version, but I didn't feel comfortable using more than 3/8 or 1/2 inch at the most. I used a 6 inch freud stack. I just recently upgraded my miter saw and the 780 was on sale so I grabbed it. The shadow line seemed like a gimmicky thing, but I use it all the time and don't think I could live without it. no more dropping the blade down and butting up the board. The line shows me exactly where it will cut way more easily.

I love my dw735. I've never really used anything else to personally compare it to. Based on reccomendations online, I spent the extra money to go for the best bench top planer available, and don't regret that decision for a moment. I haven't upgraded the cutters (yet). The cutters still function very nice and I have a spare set that came with it. Once those are used up, then I'll order the shelix cutter.

The DW7440RS table saw stand is amazing for this planer too. It took a few extra minutes to get it attached properly, but all I did was follow a youtube video and it worked perfectly. Just wheel the planer around and set it up wherever I want. Its so much easier than trying to lug that thing around. The stand has big enough wheels it goes right up and over any doorway so far.

I have both the jobsite table saw and the dw735 planer. My complaint on the planer is the chips fly out the front even with a 1HP dust collector hooked up and the planer itself is about 100lbs which makes it a bit harder to move around the shop if you don’t have a mobile cart with locking casters. My only complaint on the table saw is that there is no factory protection throat plate for a dado stack and even if you make one yourself, the arbor won’t accept a stack more than 3/8” thickness. All that said, I love both tools and have no intention of replacing them. Eventually I would like to have a full sized cabinet saw but even if I had the shop space to support one, I’d still keep the DW7845 8.25” jobsite table saw

Mine cranked hard when I first got it. Not the whole way, but at a certain point and it wasn’t great anywhere. Wasn’t sure what to do other than try to lube it. It helped a bit and over time it has gotten a lot better. Still has some spots where it binds a bit, but nothing like it was. Thought it might have been roughed up during shipping but wasn’t any signs of it. Thought about alignment, but other than taking the chain off and trying to figure out which screw or screws was off, but thought I’d just live with it.

My father-in-law is a huge DeWalt man because 3035 years ago he worked for a pallet shop and I saw they used was a DeWalt. He said they would run that eight hours a day five days a week once it got plugged in they never turned it off because they were constantly cutting. With the length he said about every two years they would have to replace the brushes in it, they replace the brushes plug it back in another roughly 2 years. He said nothing other than having to replace those brushes ever failed on that saw that’s why he’s a DeWalt guy.

I love my dewalt lunchbox planer. Can't say I ever use the lower cuts/inch setting. I just use the higher setting all the time and take shallower passes. I have an entry level 2 stage dust collection setup with the Dust Deputy over a bucket, and that running to a Rigid 16 gallon shop vac. Was the highest CFM ~190 shop vac I could find, but I found the planer pushes near ~600 CFM and overwhelms the shop vac knocking the punger ball up from inside. Had to setup a different dust collection setup to handle that. lol
@sociopathmercenary
@sociopathmercenary 26 күн бұрын
Hell ... If it's pushing that much CFM, do you even need a vacuum?
@MMMS75
@MMMS75 26 күн бұрын
@@sociopathmercenary exactly. I disconnect the vacuum when I use the planer and made a simple box with a large HVAC filter on the top to exhaust the air and catch smaller particulates from getting up in the air. The planer blower pushes a ton of air, surprised me how much it moves. My shop is in my basement and not a garage, so I’m more limited on ventilation and have had to plan more for dust collection.

You said for the Dewalt thickness planer that it has two speeds, that part is true but you said it spins the head at two different speeds for a course and fine cut that part is wrong. It changes the speed of the in feed and out feed rollers. The rollers turn slower to create more cuts per inch, and faster for a course or cut but will get you to the final dimension quicker

I have a lot of older DeWalt 18 volt tools. The batteries died, and I'm not spending the rather substantial price to replace them. There is no way to affordably adapt the newer style battery to my perfectly good tools. Replacement seems to be the only option. Which kind of made me angry. So I switched to Milwaukee. Haven't had them long enough to compare on longevity, but I like the ones I've got and will not go back. I do agree that DeWalt desk top planers are great, but I bought my old Delta two speed 13" planer before the DeWalt came out. If the DeWalt had been in production when I bought mine, I would have bought it. The Delta still works just fine, so I'll keep using it. The degree of improvement of the DeWalt over the Delta is just not enough to make a switch. I will be putting a helical cutter head on it soon though.

I am jumping in here to see if anyone can help, I purchased this planer new and have used it only about a dozen times. I went to use it recently and it will not raise beyond about an inch and a half. I noticed that when I do turn it that small amount the post diagonally across from the wheel is turning, all four posts should be stationary, shouldn’t they? DeWalt customer support has been less than helpful, but that’s another long story. Have any of you experienced this? Any ideas on how I might fix it? Thanks, Dan

This is an excellent list. My only disagreement is with the recommendation of the DeWalt 8.25" table saw. The DeWalt saw is a good choice, but the Metabl HPT 10" table saw is a much better saw for only a little more money. Both saws have the same kind of rack and pinion fence, but the Metabo has a much wider rip capacity. Also, with its 10" blade, the Metabo has a greater depth of cut. More importantly, the Metabo has a larger fence AND built-in outfeed support. The larger table and outfeed support make it easier and safer to cut larger or longer materials on the saw. Again, the DeWalt isn't a bad saw. The Metabl HPT is just a better option.

In the other direction, the Skil 10" table saw is almost as good as the DeWalt 10", but costs less than the DeWalt 8.25". And it has the same rack and pinion fence.

Also don’t forget the Metabo has soft start and ebrake. Plus it can handle a dado blade. Only negative is you can’t remove the riving knife when using a dado. - I have the Metabo job site saw.

Great videos, Matt! If you had to choose between a track saw (Makita) and a contractor/job site saw, which would be the most versatile and offer the best bang for your buck? I purchased the Makita track saw, but I'm having second thoughts and might return it as I haven't used it yet. I'm looking at the Skilsaw spt99-11 worm drive table saw. Anyway, I'd appreciate any helpful input you or anyone else can provide! Thanks!!!!

I pretty much use my Makita track saw to break down 4x8 sheets before running them through my table saw. I also cut down a lot of doors that are rubbing on carpet with it. Its very versatile but it doesn't replace a table saw.

After seeing your review and comparison of the i-Gauging square vs the Woodpeckers I read the Amazon reviews lots of reviewers said they were not square and proved it, some noted that the base is glued on and separated on them, not what I would expect in a precision tool. In the future I will not be putting much stock in your reviews of products.

@SplashJohn

"Across the board"? Personally, I wouldn't go that far. I'm a remodel carpenter; I do almost everything, from concrete to painting, so I have a LOT of tools. Most of my current power tools are Dewalt 20v or 60v, and here's how I would classify all I've bought over the years: 60% are excellent, 30% are good enough, 10% were clunkers which I got rid of. I accept the "good enough" tools not because I'm a Dewalt fanboy, but in order to avoid another battery platform. Some carpenters choose to have multiple platforms in order to get all the best-in-class tools, and I would never argue with that choice. IMHO, nobody can go wrong with any of the big 3 (Milwaukee, Makita, Dewalt).

DeWalt makes an fine tool, but in almost every case there is a better tool for a specific application with better features and a better price. The planer is a great example. The configuration shown with the helical cutter is $1k tool. For that price, the Grizzly 12" planer jointer combo is a better deal coming with the helical cutter as standard and having a jointer.

Minor correction: you mention about the Dewalt cordless router that it only takes 1/4” bits “like all other cordless routers.” Not true - both Milwaukee and Makita palm sized cordless routers come with 1/4” AND 3/8” collets. Also, both Milwaukee and Metabo HPT make “full sized” cordless routers that take standard 1/2” bits. Otherwise, it’s a pretty solid list; while I generally use Milwaukee tools, I wouldn’t complain about receiving any of the products you list.

The only dewalt tool I own or ever will own is that planer. Bar none best jobsite planer. Everything else they make is mediocre at best 😆. I flipped from dewalt to Makita when I decided I wanted precision and longevity. Cordless 40v Makita sliding compound miter for off grid jobs, Bosch slider for on grid. Bosch tablesaw on grid (they’re the best chop/table saws in the industry, IMHO). Almost everything else is Makita with the exception of nail guns which are Milwaukee.

Agree with most of these and have the 779 and 8.5" table saw. There's an aftermarket shadow line kit for the 779 that works perfect and there are some metal vs plastic differences between the 779 & 780 - not enough to make a difference. The deal I got with amazon was ridiculous. But the drills? Eh. All the DeWilt drills I've had died. Went with Metabo and not looked back there. DW's jigsaw is better than its drills by a considerable margin. As for 8.5 vs 10", will say not needed my 10" Jet since I got the 8.5, but haven't been doing cabinets and the like either. It's a great saw. Having said that, most of the other DeWilt stuff is marginal at best. Look at Metabo 1st and especially the CAS based Metabo. Converters available re batteries. Went with Cutech's spiral planers and been happy.
