Funny thing is that I took a trip recently and had a bunch of my jewelry in a bag. They held back my purse and luggage, passing several other bags that were behind mine in front of mine. I kept staring at the agent at the place that you put the bag on the belt because I felt uncomfortable with him. When he finally sent it through, they decided to search my bag. TSA admitted they wanted to check the jewelry. That was the sole reason they wanted to search the bag and went straight for the compartment it was in. So the technology is there to definitively say what an object is before the bag was opened. They were using the 3D x-rays so they could see that the jewelry wasn't concealing any drugs or anything. I had to chastise them for demanding to go through my jewelry. I wasn't coming from overseas where they might have been interested in what I had failed to declare, but they went through my stuff until I got nasty because that specific reason for a search was actually illegal. So now how is it that they missed bullets with all of these people?

We took our college-age kids on their first international vacation this year to Cozumel. I literally gathered them all in the living room and gave them all the rules to follow when traveling internationally. I even told them that they didn't know what to do to come find me, and w4e must triple-check anything. We want to bring back into the country to make sure we can import it via customs. I even talked to them about the process of declaring items when you come back into the United States. I took my family out of the country. And it was my responsibility to make sure they were prepared. The trip went off without a hitch. I've also traveled all over the world for leisure and work. I've known for twenty years to look up the rules before I land on foreign shores. I've had spectacular adventures all over the planet. I have sympathy for these situations. But in the age of the internet, nobody should be getting caught off guard by rules in other countries. This is a very hard lesson many Americans need to learn. American rights do not follow you outside of our borders. I think the penalty is too harsh for the crime. But I'm also not a citizen of that country, so my opinion is moot.

Turks and Caicos just recently introduced the penalty of 12 years for tourists caught with ammunition. Before they paid a fine. The fine was not a sufficient deterrent. That also means that there were tourists bringing in ammo for the wrong reasons, and all using the same excuse. Your hear one side of the story. "It was not my intent". Yet five persons are facing sentencing since the 12 year penalty was introduced. You only need to smuggle in one bullet to harm someone. Your response was also my response exactly when I saw this story yesterday. How does anybody get in this situation after the others have made national news? BTW, you can carry ammo in your checked bags so you can't put this on the TSA.

This is so American (speaking as an American). The funny thing is these individuals are usually the main ones saying, "if you don't want to go to jail, than don't break the law." Let me honest, he only has a problem with it because he got caught. I only give a bit of sympathy to the first person who got arrested right after the law changed. But at this point, there is no excuse. I don't understand why someone would just have random rounds of ammunition in their bag. As adults, we have to take accountability and make sure we understand the laws of other countries. And everyone keeps saying that how did it get through TSA. We are assuming he had it in a carry-on; it could have been in a checked bag. In that case, you are allowed to carry ammunition. So you can get out of the country with a weapon/bullets, but it doesn't mean you won't get in trouble where you are going.

No doubt on knowing what’s in your bag. It’s smuggling if you bring drugs whether it’s “accidentally” or not. “I didn’t know that was there” doesn’t work when for example going to Florida from California with a joint.

I really have no sympathy for this guy. Like, maybe just don’t travel without researching where you are going? Leave it to an American man to assume he can bring his same American rights to whichever country he brings his Americaness. Imprisoning him is not meant to help anyone. It’s meant to be the consequence of his actions. I remember when I learned that camo print is illegal in many island countries. Guess who doesn’t even buy camo anything anymore just so I don’t have it as an option for myself or my son in our wardrobe? Me. Like, have a travel bag. Don’t use that for questionable American activities. Keep it boring and simple, and don’t use it for daily life!

The bags that I use for travel, I use for nothing but travel but I STILL check every pocket before a trip!! I collect knives. My late wife bought me this knife that folded into a credit card. A nice little novelty item. I carried it in my wallet for yeeeeeeears. Went through TSA for flights several times during those years, not even remembering that it was there. I never got flagged by TSA. Then one day, getting back onto a Carnival ship from a port of call, I put my wallet phone and watch in the little bowl to go onto the Xray conveyer belt as usual, (Just as I do for TSA) and THEY flagged it! lol..

30 years ago, I was working at a small regional airport. We would get long haul truckers who would grab their cab bag and try to fly out. Security would catch those handguns. Guys, if it's your every day backpack, purse, or gym bag dump it out on your bed the night before and repack it. Governments are hyper sensitive to what we all carry. Respect the laws.

We will be flying to a European country to take a cruise. I checked the country’s website to see if there was a list of prohibited items, and was surprised to see “chocolate candies” on the list. We always take some to give to our cabin attendant so I already had some ready to be packed. I have no idea why this should be prohibited, but it’s their law, so the candy is now back in my pantry. Had I not checked, I would have been surprised at Customs upon entry and it would probably have been confiscated. At least now I have some to enjoy when I get back home.

This actually happened to me in 2011 when flying to Utah from Michigan. The bag was my husbands and for some reason in a pocket on the very bottom was a AR bullet. I didn't get stopped leaving the airport in Michigan only when flying back from Utah to Michigan. They pulled me over and asked what gun I had, looking clueless they pulled out this giant bullet. We still don't know exactly where that came from.

I once found $100 in my backpack that slid out of the envelope after a cruise trip. 10 years in jail for just ammo?
