That's awesome, thank you for sharing this Thomas. I've always wanted an S4 like that, but i don't have a lift. And i know the 4.2's are engine out service for timing chains. One day maybe

One day... for me too! It's nice to get the chance to work on stuff like this, but would be nicer to own. Many obstacles in the way though. Need a house with a big garage and fewer monthly bills (in short, not gonna happen). =(

Here's hoping you'll soon have your own shop and can pursue your own projects. One tempting car related prospect I have entertained is to pick a particular car that I admire and devote a business to just that model alone. Preferably one with sufficient years of production and build count. I think I've seen businesses do that with the Beetle, the Vanagons, with Jag XKE's, with Porsche 911's and with some success at least in terms of shop longevity. Ferraris would be tempting for such a project if I could just afford the first one to get started. By specializing in one model you can get the parts sources and have a side business in parts sales.

Yes, I've heard of shops doing exactly that. I'll never run my own shop (I don't have the business savvy), but might do that (turn wrenches on a specific vehicle) when retired... to stay busy. I was hoping youtube would get me there.

Maybe the Audi S4 would be such a candidate car? In California, I sometimes see cars where many parts are NLA and the car cannot pass the California Smog check end up on the market for very reasonable prices. For example a 2000's BMW 7 Series for less than $700 dollars US. Someone just needs the expertise to repair them efficiently.. When the ECU is Dealer NLA and expensive from even the remanufacturers it is particularly tough,@@EXOVCDS

Also, man, I love the powertrain table! Is it the kind that slides out so you can separate transmission and engine and then slide them back together? (Provided you have all attachment accessories)

Hey man. Git a question. I have an mk4 jetta 1.8 that keeps eating 25 amp ac fuses. It's the inside panel no 25 fuse. The fuse itself is a 25 amp and one time instead of blowing it melted and smoked. I've done research and found that sometimes the climate control module where the knobs are can possibly cause this? Or the blower motor or pressure switch? Idk.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 ай бұрын
Fuse 25 is strictly for the fresh air blower motor. Make sure that the blower motor spins freely. Odds are that it is... a stiff spinning motor usually fries the resistor pack. The only thing left then is the blower motor speed adjusting knob. Remove / pull off the knobs and the plastic panel covering the assembly. Look at / inspect the rotary blower dial as you turn it. The metal wiper can come loose and bridge a circuit that it shouldn't.

If you order from a VW/Audi parts store, you'll get a decent quality kit. Germanautoparts.com Shopdap.com Ecstuning.com Idparts.com Continental kits are popular. Each shop can customize kits to include engine mount bolts, crank & cam seals... etc. The more that you replace while you are in-there, the better the odds you won't have to go back in a couple years later.

Hey Tom vw mk4 brake question for ya. I have a 2001 with a brake pedal that sinks close to floor and is soft. Brakes new. No leaks. Reservoir full. Haven’t bled them but previously have a while ago. Master cylinder original. Any ideas? I was thinking plugging both lines coming off master cylinder and seeing if pedal is hard to rule that out? Thx
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 ай бұрын
Yes, plug master. If solid pedal now, attach one line and check again. Or isolate by blocking at the caliper lines one by one till the pedal feel changes. Turn the rear caliper pistons in till stop and then turn the piston back out until the caliper slides over the pads with a millimeter or 2 of free play. I prefer to turn the pistons out rather than pump the pedal or handbrake. I have solved low pedal in the past by resetting calipers like that after a customer did his own rear brakes and now has a low pedal.

@@EXOVCDSOk do I have to bleed the brakes after I plug and test the Master?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 3 ай бұрын
When you disconnect the line, fluid will come out of the master. As long as the reservoir is full, no air will get in. The brake line might lose a few drops, but won't drain out. When you reconnect the line, leave the fitting loose and tighten it after you see no more bubbles coming out between the threads.

Hey I changed my master and bled it. I bled all 4 lines twice. Pedal is firm with car off. When car is run in it does right to the floor. Any ideas?
@pujo28
@pujo28 3 ай бұрын
Also my brake light on instrument cluster is flashing. My fluid is not low and ABS fuse is good. Only started flashing after I bled the brakes. Pedal still goes to the floor only when running. Can the new master be bad or could there be air be trapped in ABS module? Thx in advance
