Recreating the crisp magic of Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's 1957 Broadway musical masterpiece (along with the iconic 10 out of 11 Oscar-winning 1961 film [won Best Picture]!), with a classic Stephen Spielberg twist, Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler reignite Tony and Maria's heartbreaking love story in West Side Story. In an EXCLUSIVE chat with Pinkvilla, Ansel and Rachel had their funny hats on as they reminisced their memorable first audition, which included hilariously being made to watch Nicki Minaj's Chun-Li MV whilst auditioning with the legendary romantic musical number, Maria, and how they were able to establish Tony and Maria's endearing meet-cute amid a thrilling dance sequence to the classic West Side Story musical number, Dance at the Gym.

Ansel and Rachel seem so relaxed and comfortable together, just a natural back and forth dialogue between them. Wow! I can watch them talking and laughing for an hour!

She doesn’t look like Belle at all. Dianna Agron looked like Belle back when she was young, in 2009. Rachel looks a lot like Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame - same eyebrows, same hair, same colours and same “aggressive” facial features (don’t know who to describe it, just like something kind of naturally aggressive about her face). But at least I’m sure she will do a good job as Snow White, even though she looks nothing like the part. She is very talented and very Disney-princessy.

@@toottoot75 I was referring to the hairstyle and the color of her dress okay chill lol. In my opinion she looks like the animated Snow White. Not Esmeralda. Esmeralda had a different hair texture, different skin tone, different body type and overall facial features are different. Plus Esmeralda’s like 26 and Rachel looks way younger (like Snow White) On the other hand I can see why she was picked to play snow because I’ve seen some comparisons on Instagram of a side to side between her and snow and they look pretty much the same. Imo. She has a Snow White like singing voice and in she portrayed Maria in WSS as very young and innocent. Literally perfect for the role, I don’t see why people were going on about skin when she’s already light enough to play Snow White anyway.

Okay, I didn’t know how old Esmeralda is, but I still think she could pull it off. And her voice could fit every classic Disney heroine, not just Snow White. I actually think it could be interesting if Snow White had a different singing style from the animation, like if it was someone who sounds less like a typical Disney princess and had a deep mysterious voice, like Dua Lipa, because the story is kind of dark and gruesome. But that’s probably just me. People are disappointed with the casting because the story takes place in the Black Forest and she really doesn’t look like someone who is native to this region. Even if the story took place somewhere in the Balkan or souther Europe, people would be okay with this. Also, the pallor of Snow White’s skin is one of the characteristics most identified with the character.

@@toottoot75 She’s Polish. The country neighbouring Snow White’s setting of Germany. Like I said her skin tone is light enough to play Snow White anyway, no-body’s skin is actually “skin as white as snow” too. Anyway. Rachel’s high notes and range are literally Snow White in the animated, like I can just imagine her singing “I’m wishing” or “someday my prince will come” which when she sang “I feel pretty” in WSS reminded me of that. Esmeralda should be played by someone who’s good at playing very masculine or powerful way not innocent and sweet even tho this Snow White will have some power Rachel said. Out of all the people who could have been picked, Rachel is the best choice. In terms of caring as well, like the amount of Oscar buzz she’s getting for WSS which is her first movie ever. She’s too good at playing sweet and innocent Snow White-like role to be Esmeralda which is why she’s the perfect Snow. Just Like Halle Bailey as Ariel, people wanted her to be Tiana instead but she’s nothing like Tiana. She fits the soul and youth and especially singing voice of Ariel which is why she was picked. They could have just cast any redhead actress for the role but they didn’t. They could have cast any black-haired white girl from Texas or something but they didn’t. This is just the start for Rachel, she’s the perfect Snow White, period.

@@bellasmith276 While I understand where you're coming from - there's a lot of photos that show them hanging out together (not just in the press junket) after the allegations. I don't think her liking him is fake. It's quite likely the cast and studio (Disney is extremely strict and careful on this front; they have blacklisted actors before from press junkets for smaller allegations than this) knows something we do not. Which is why the cast is generally accepting to him, on and off-screen. Rachel originally saying what she did and liking certain tweets do not mean her stance on this topic is the same at this point in time. Of course this is speculation but it is very unlikely she is faking this friendship.
