That's only underachievers. An insane amount of entrepreneurs have either built a successful business and gone bankrupt or gone bankrupt and then become successful. 'fortune favours the bold.' Bankruptcy is looked down upon because its usually middle class people that go into debt by spending way out of their means, going bankrupt because you had the balls to take a risk is admirable.

More of a serious question: How often do you come across illegal activities in the watch market? From the news we hear that watches are not only often stolen, but also used by criminals as a way to convert cash. How do you avoid this and does a watch dealer get treated differently by tax officials?

I would love to see this compared to some of the US dealers. In the UK nico cannot accepted more than £5k in physical cash. But we see us watch dealers walking around with $100k in a backpack.

The issue in the US isn’t accepting that much cash. It’s depositing it into a bank. $10k and above has to be reported to the IRS. And they’re going to question withdrawals of the same amount. If they just keep it as cash there are no issues….unless they get pulled over and law enforcement decides to keep it due to civil asset forfeiture laws that are bullshit.

There is an online database of watch reference numbers that gets updated when a watch is stolen. When someone tries to sell a watch (especially under suspicious circumstances such as no box or papers), they can run the reference number through the database and then they will know if it has been flagged as stolen

I feel like all of our grandfathers had a seiko or Casio. Mine was Casio with the stretch metal band. He was a farmer that wore that watch for close to 40 years while doing physical farm labor and it’s still ticking like a top oddly enoug

His reaction about his grandfathers watch is the same as mine. My grandfather gave me a really old certina before he died, the reference numbers cant be found anywhere, and when we took it in to get it repaired, we had to get the pieces custom made from certina as they hadn't made any spare parts for them, and only sold around 100 of them. The man who was doing tje restoration was absolutely entranced by the thing, amd offered us quite a bit of money for it, but i couldn't bring myself to sell it because it means so much to me. I love the thing to death now amd look forward to passing it down to my grandkids some day.
