Stealing from a Thief on Vol 8 would work with Joey’s voice, but yeah, Joey can’t handle these songs. John’s voice on POT would make so much darker and angrier and suit the mood better, but Joey’s voice could not do justice to any of the Bush-era records.

The biggest mistake people make is listening to a record thinking about the previous work, I just try to appreciate it as best I can, I listen to it several times before I have a definite opinion. It's like Corey said: SOWN is easily one of the best metal records of the 90s and it's one of my favorites in Anthrax discography, and I have the first 4 records (1984-1988) as my favourites. As I see it, SOWN has songs like 'Potters Field', 'Only', 'Room for One More', 'Packaged Rebellion', 'Invisible', 'Black Lodge' and 'This Is Not an Exit'. I listen and have good memories of the 90's and it's an album that whoever listens for the first time will automatically associate the sound with the decade when the record hit stores. I hope that over time, these videos will have simultaneous translations, to reach as many fans as possible who are not yet fluent in the English language. Greetings from Brazil.

The Sound of White Noise is for Anthrax what Low is for Testement; Painkiller for Judas Preist; The Crimson Idol for WASP; its what WFO was for Overkill; hear me now, believe me later: it is what the album Dropped was to Mindfunk. Great album, one of Anthrax´s best IMO. The band was always open about loving alternative music, hiphop, and other genres, so it didn´t sound forced (as was the case with some metal bands from the 90s emulating others) and more of a logical step for them. What I love the most about Anthrax is they were never in that metal pose of dissing music, or fashion, or whatever for "not being metal enough" and that toxic kind of shit that´s still very common in the metal community.

I don’t care what the fuck anyone says, this album is just all killer, no filler, some of their best stuff through and through. John Bush’s vocals added a huge dimension that worked with Anthrax. I know fans get hung up on who sings, and I do too, but this was so fresh sounding when it came out, and it had real atmosphere. That was one element that I thought the ‘thrax had kinda lost. For example, P.O.T. is a great record, but it sounds so tight and dry compared to Sound of White Noise. At that time, it was hard to tell the difference between Exodus, Gothic Slam, DRI, they all had that right-dry, no frills, but no atmosphere take on almost every damn song. I like that shit, but I don’t want to marry it. And lyrically, it was a sonic thrust forward for John and Scott. The riffs were good as always, but the songs as a whole were so much more streamlined and logical, and I felt that these songs connected with me in a way that none of the prior ones had. I can’t thank Anthrax enough for creating this beast!! To this day I crank this fucker !

I remember when Black Lodge got airplay. I was 20, and had stopped paying attention the daily news on bands. Wasn't watching Mtv. Just occasionally listening to the radio, so I had NO idea Belladonna was out and Bush was in. I remember the DJ announcing after the commercial the new Anthrax song was going to be on. I remember just chompin' at the bit waiting for the commercial break to finish. Finally Black Lodge comes on with that slow intro and the wide vibratos, and then Bush starts singing. My brain legit thought the station was playing the song at 3/4 speed. Took me a second to really process this was indeed Anthrax, the song was playing at the correct speed, and for some reason Joey was no longer in the band. Slayer was the only one of the big 4 that had the courage not to do a ballad.

Bands change. People change. Accepting those terms anyone can envoy the art. And art is what Anthrax showed in the John Era. That's what i call creativity and REALLY not caring about what others think. Anthrax made some of their best albums in that era just because they decided that they were free and ready to try new things. Thanks to those albums i became a fan and reached to the older stuff.

Sound of White Noise holds some good memories for me personally, it was a good time in my life. It was a 180° change of direction for Anthrax musically, I was as surprised as anyone when I heard they'd got rid of Joey, i'd grown up with Joey being the voice of Anthrax!!

I had listened to anthrax a long time before this album came out but in my opinion this is their best and most mature work .

For me the sound of white noise will always stand out as a great start for John. He just gave a Anthrax a real fresh start and a new look into the way the band needed to go on from Joey.

Glad Scott talks about how much of a throughline there is between Persistence and Sound creatively, I mentioned it in the comments of last week's vid and I feel like it's really overlooked. So much shared DNA between those albums and I think that's part of why they both work so incredibly well despite the massive change of vocals.

Agreed 100%. There’s a good reason that Bush sounded so good singing songs like ‘Keep It In The Family’ live. SOWN is absolutely a natural progression from PoT.

Bush would have been great on all of POT, that album would have reached its full potential with his vocals

This is the one I came in on. Love both eras equally but I must admit I'm protective of the bush era on account of I don't feel it gets its due. This album crushes

It gets no love in this video but 1,000 Points Of Hate is an amazing song. Best on the album. Also should have spent more time on how that first tour and life on the road was different with John vs. Joey and was hoping to see some rare studio footage too. Top 3 Anthrax album for me.

The best of the Bush era by far. I saw them on their small club tour at the Stone in San Francisco in 93 as they prepped for larger tours later that year. That show brings back good memories as I was only feet away from the band and you could see their excitement as they played the new and old songs with John. That said, after each subsequent album with John my interest waned. I bought every album but they never stuck with me like POT, STD, or ATL did.

Huge John Bush era fan here. As a thrash fan since 85, was definitely more of a Slayer/Metallica fan. Liked Anthrax but didn't love them as much as the other bands with grit in the vocals. John brought the grit for me. "We have come for you all" is one of my favorite records ever.

I was and still am a fan of the Bush era (of course the Joey era too). I am digging the hell out these videos. The insights from the guys that were there and a part of it is pretty awesome. The next episode will probably break my heart a little. Stomp was a great album that was so ignored it should be a legit crime with punishment.
