We never said much. We kept to ourselves and read comic books...played D & D...enjoyed some sporadic 'lierature' at our leisure. We were ridiculed. We were picked on by the 'cool' kids. So we tried to fly under the radar and avoid ridicule. We liked Metal. Some of us liked punk as well. (That was a 'no-no' back in 1985 in my region) But there was an absolute connection with Anthrax. Particularly when Among The Living was released. For lack of a better term, this was "Nerd Rock" to us. Songs based on Judge Dredd. What? Songs based on King books. What? Lyrics with a message...Imitation of Life. What? That album spoke to us. And it spoke to others, as well. The music welcomed us to understand that it was OK to be yourself. We had never heard these things before. And here are these bad ass riff rocking ass kicking muthas saying "Yeah, man! It's cool!" I'm 51 years old and this record holds a place in my heart. THIS is the record that started my journey with Anthrax (my personal favorite of the Big 4) and I have never looked back. I could get into more but I've probably already been too long winded. Regardless, I will always be a fan of Anthrax.

Indians was the very first thrash song I ever heard. I taped it off the radio from a college station. I loved the song but didn't know who it was until a month later at my cousins who had cable and was flipping through channels. He passed MTV and I yelled at him, "go back, go back, that's the song! It's the song on the tape!" Thats when I finally learned it was ANTHRAX and that cable had a metal video show.

I'd loved to have seen them on the Among The Living tour... but I did see them on State Of Euphoria in Bristol, England. They had Kings X supporting who were excellent! But Anthrax were ferocious!! Before the gig, some blokes that knew my friend came up and said they'd sneaked in during soundcheck and stolen Charlie's hat (from the I Am The Man video) But the bloke that said that passed it to his friend. Some moments passed when all of a sudden this HUGE guy comes from nowhere and launches into the guy wearing the hat. Turns out this guy was one of the roadies and a friend of Charlie and spotted this bloke wearing the hat in the audience. Poor guy didn't know what hit him, security was holding the roadie off and I don't know what happened to the guy wearing the hat, I assume he was kicked out... or knocked out. I was 15 and it shocked the hell out of me! Anyway, Anthrax were awesome. Dan Spitz is never lauded as being one of the great metal lead guitarists, which is a shame because he was very skilled!

@@marshfilm He had a Randy Rhoads-esque style, which was awesome, then on The Sound Of White Noise he got more bluesy and used wah, which I really dug as well - it fit those songs. He was really good at playing the perfect solo to compliment the song.

Doing the S.O.D album clearly influenced the direction that Anthrax went in on Among The Living. The songs were much faster and more aggressive and punk-influenced compared to the more Maiden-influenced speed metal of Spreading The Disease. Even the vocals had a more punk-ish delivery.

I love you guys \m/ Found out about you in 87 when I was 12 years old and I could not stop listening to you. I saw you open for Iron Maiden in 1991 when I was 15. One of the best shows I ever got to see and it was also my first arena show. Keep making killer metal \m/ I will keep listening and I am sure at some point in my own music some of your influence will leak out if it has not already \m/ MOSH IT UP

Whoa! I used to go to Mike’s Comic Hut, in Flushing Queens, too! For years and years and years. I also went to Bayside High School with Scott Ian. He was a few years older than l am, so l didn’t know him.
