Back in the 80s,when I was 15,my Dad and I rebuilt one of these,same year,1967. He passed in 2015. Still have the sled.

Got my coffee...wow that brings back memories. I graduated from HS in 1971. In 1970 I had one of those and had a blast on it. Always started, wasnt a rocket, but always got me there and back. Great memories of days long ago.

My first snowmobile was a 1964 foxtrack. My second was a 1967 skidoo Olympic just like this one. I’m gettin old.

Had a '72 Olympic. Differences I noticed. Hood comes off with clips. Exhaust exits the sled in the middle just in front of the track. They made a plastic backrest with a flip up padded cover that was also storage. Rescued the stuck plow driver one time. Also saved a little dog that was on the frozen lake all matted with ice!

I can't believe viewers would actually complain about the videos being too long, are they whacked? They could simply watch half, then watch the other half later... not rocket science people. Loved the video and the old bubblenose, Mustie. In the 80s and 90s I had a 1970 Olympique 335, which is a very similar machine. Was looking over your shoulder as you encountered challenges with a smile. A few things: the sparkplug thread is 18mm. The crank seals and bearings are likely gone. I had to change mine. The original crank bearings are a non-tapered roller bearing, but the replacements were ball bearings, at least in the 80s. Order a carb kit, you’re gonna need it. tillotson carb, either an HL or HR. The type will be stamped into the carb body casting. The two adjustable carb jets are low speed and high speed. High speed really has to be adjusted under load while riding, to the conditions. The chaincase takes gear lube, and needs to be filled about half-way up the lower sprocket. There should be a belt guard, but it appears to be missing. Bogie wheels take a shot of grease in the axle end. Bogie shafts need to be disassembled to grease properly. Rear idler shaft has greasable bearings, and that’s where the track is tensioned too. Check the front drive sprockets, if they are shot, you’ll need replacements. The tag on the engine cover that says “Made in Austria” will list the displacement. Key switch just kills ignition; i.e. not essential. Machine is definitely worth saving, find a collector in your area if you don’t want it. My old 335 would run at 55mph on a compacted snow lake, and it was pretty hairy at that speed. Oh and you’ll hate the gas tank; it’s part of the tub forward of the track, and they tend to rust up something awful inside. Around 72/73 Skidoo went to a plastic tank. 👍 oh ya, this engine needs a 20:1 mixture, not 50:1.

In 75 we had a Olympic 340, first sled we owned with slide rail suspension, instead of bogie wheels. We had no idea that a small amount of snow was necessary, to lubricate and cool the plastic slide rails which get very hot, without 1 or 2 inches of snow. So we motored across Sebago lake, frozen like glass, to our ice shack. After 4 or 5 hours of fishing, we decided to head home, dad started the brand new sled, and he could not get it to move, the slides had got so hot on our way out, that they melted the plastic slides, and when we parked, the melted slides fused together with the track. Dad kept revving, the engine, unaware of the problem. After a few minutes the engine reved up like it was free, but the sled did not move. He had stripped the rubber drive gears, dad spent rest of winter replacing those....

These were the early mass produced Bombardier snow-mobile. From the inventor of those Joseph-Armand Bombardier (1907-1964) genius inventor from Quebec Canada. He first created bigger ones (look-up Bombardier Autoneige) so people in Quebec could move around in the winter because roads were not plowed in that era. Great to see you bring one back to life.

Brings back some memories. We had a 69 Olympique 320. Always had to have a pocket full of spare plugs with those early sleds.

I used to ride this same model around after school - Alaska 1970's. You ALWAYS carried more spark plugs in case they fouled, and cleaned them up as soon as you got back home...ready for the next ride

I used it run a 67/68 skidoo just like that single cylinder. I can still smell the rich oil gas mixture, and the thumping movement of that engine when it was idling. Provided a lot of entertainment for me as a young teenager, keep up the great videos. Your videos are entertaining and educational.

My grandfather had one. We use to take it out on the lake and go ice fishing. I'm surprised it was last used in 1998. I realize that was 26 years ago but most were retired way before that! I'm sure I shorted my life by 5 years from all the gas fumes I breathed in during my childhood.

That's almost identical to my first sled. There were snap holders for the hood. The exhaust broke right outside the block. A Skiroule friend of mine used a piece of flex pipe and clamps to fix it. The machine wasn't fast but it was super reliable. There were small fixtures just below the seat to hold a back test for a single rider. That is a great piece you have there. as always a good video.

Longer episodes are way better than short teaser episodes. Ain't no such thing as a to long Mustie1 episode. His self humor and the way he explains things is a big part of what makes him an absolute joy to watch.

I'm from Gaspé, Province of Quebec, Canada. When I was 16, in 1970, my friend and his father had those Ski Doo Bombardier. My father was a mechanic and I asked him what to do to fix my friend's Ski Doo. We did that in the basement of their house and the lady was not happy of the smell ! Then we dressed with our snowmobile suit and took a ride on the ice of the bay. These machines were quite reliable, but there were times when we had to make a repair on the trail or tow them on a sled to get back home... it was part of the game. The following weekend, we started again anyway to discover some other trail. Inside the magneto is a centrifugal advance that allows the timing to be changed as the motor speed increases. Nice memories. Byyyyye

So glad the old "Canuck" ended up in Mustie's hands. My first ride was on a Ski-doo Elan back in 72. This machine has a small flip-up hitch to tow an enclosed 2-person, factory made sled as I recall.

It's windshield has been replaced. The original windshield would be yellow. Those old bubble top Ski-Doos are nearly indestructible but don't turn for crap unless you put spreaders/risers in it to push the skis farther apart about 3" per side and down about an additional 2" or unless you lean heavily to the side when you are trying to turn. They have the advantage of having bogie wheels so they can be ran with little or even no snow if necessary which is why they are great for going ice fishing when there is bare ice on the lakes. Their Rotax engines are extremely reliable but are mounted too far back which is why they don't steer very well. I have been around vintage sleds for decades and have great appreciation and respect for these amazing machines. That sled has a bare aluminum head and likely a cast iron cylinder that was painted black from the factory. There is rarely any reason to remove the flywheel on these engines as there are openings through the flywheel behind the rewind hub that allows access to the points to clean and adjust them. The Tillotson carbs are extremely reliable and easy to work on and so are the clutches on them.

Love the videos, and how indepth they are. Just FYI Darren, if you go on the inside lower edge of the hood like where your feet would be if you sat on the seat, there should be 2 wing nuts or regular nuts in an L bracket that hold the hood on, remove those nuts, and the gas cap and the hood should come off, just lift it from the handlebars forward. I rode one of those that my father built when I was a kid, loved the machine, we actually had a musher style trailer for the back and would go out and get firewood all the time. It was a blast. Hope to see the whole sled run and move.

Awesome sled. I would get it running, it looks all there as long as the track holds it would be a blast to ride, .and It would probably sell for a nice price. I had a 1970 Skidoo Elan and it was the sled I kept for a backup in case we need an extra sled when one broke down. Not fast but fun.

I grew up on a farm in northeast WI. In 1968 my dad bought a brand new Ski-Doo snowmobile. To me it was the greatest thing on earth! My older brothers gave me rides on the back but spent most of their time by the neighbors riding with them. I was about 6 or 7 and my dad decided to teach me how to drive it. Drive slow in the farm yard but you can go faster in the fields. With my father on the back I finally got my chance to drive it. We idled it out of the barnyard and got into a field. I gunned and hit a drift. I was in heaven! I turned around to see my dad getting up from the snow drift. I bucked him off the back of the sled! I went back to pick him up and he had me take him back. He said lesson was over, I knew how to drive the snowmobile.

That machine looks solid, it's worthy of a full restoration.

When i was younger, a local small ski mountain, used to use and maintain a Skidoo Alpine 640. It had twin tracks and a single ski on the front. They used it for hauling around maintenance sleds, and ski patrol. Even though they had more modern sleds at the time, i always loved that Alpine!

Wife always moaned at me "clean it up before you bring it indoors", only had the kitchen to work on my bikes.

Farmers' teens had these SkiDoos when we were kids.I was a poor boy, so had only a flexible flyer sled from the local thrift shop. Farmboys would pull sleds and go all around the fields. One kid was badly injured when he ran into a barbed wire fence!

I used to race one of these in my younger days. It was a modified 10 hp with a tuned pipe exhaust. I still have my third place gold cup from the first ever televised ABC Wide World of Sports snowmobile races World Championship at Eagle River, Wisconsin. Those were the good old days. That hood was a pain in the a$$ to remove. We always removed the bolts and replaced them with pop rivets. Much easier to just drill out the rivets to access under the hood again. Can't believe it fired so easily without needing carb work. That Tillotson carb was good for having a sticky needle valve. Great video Mustie, thanks for sharing, this brings back a lot of memories!

Later years had a decompression valve. The Ski-doo clutches were never as smooth as other brands. I had a ‘69 12.3 Oly, a 70 18 Oly, a ‘71 Nordic 399, and a ‘72 Nordic 440

My dad bought a brand new 1969 skidoo 320e in December of 1968. What a blast. Every kid in the neighborhood learned to ride on that sled. I have another sled that’s identical to the original, came from the same dealer and the same salesman. My dad asked me a few years back before he passed away, why I still rode and I said “ you planted the seed “.
