Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 - 28 July 1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. Born in Venice, he is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons.

Performed with RV 540, 146 and 552 for Prince Friedrich Christian of Poland and his musicians. There are no trumpets in this piece. The solo violins in this piece are instructed to imitate the sound of a marine trumpet (trombe marina) which was not a brass instrument, but a large bowed instrument and one string with a very buzzy tone. Vivaldi "adapted" some violins owned by the Pieta for roles like this by attaching pieces of metal to the bridge which would rattle on the body of the instrument.
