When I replaced my 1911s extractor after the original broke, I saw pages upon pages online about tuning your extractor. Luckily for me, the extractor I bought worked just fine as is.

I wish I didn't hear the word "dremel" said so often when referencing somebody's previous attempt at fixing a gun.

As soon as I seen the title, I laughed out loud!!!!.. Many year have past, and for the longest time, I couldn't remember the name of this Wolf Ultramatic POS... A friend of mine over paid for one of these units, and was so proud of it. In my opinion, I thought it looked pretty neat as well. B.....U..... T..... the years he tried to make that POS work right, trying to keep it alive, considering that he soon found out he over paid for something that was already costly, then something well known to be more reliable, he really did try to make this junk work. First it was suspect that ammo type was the issues, run a few mag worth, finally, he fixed the issue... the second he thought that, same old problems, LOL.... Try another brand of ammo, a few mags later, YES!!! it is fixed!!! and the next mag more issues, LOL.... Okay fine, maybe it isn't the ammo causing the various issues... Must be the magazines... waited about 8 months for a foreign company to ship him what they had left in stock, that were claimed to be what was originally sold with the units, along with a few other brands that will fit? (as I remember it?)... same old deal, load up some new mags and everything start working the way it should, and I remember him saying... "Man, I wish I would have just ordered mag's along time ago, as the unit is just fine now." while also making mention that were did n't know what we were talking about, and to leave him alone about it, as it is a really great unit... blah...blah...blah... well, he loads up the next couple mags, runs one mag, and is feeling pretty confident, and is assured after verbally smacking us around, loads up the second mag, but you could tell, he was praying to the firearm god's, "please work... please work..... please work".... LOL.. I say that due to his pause before sending the first round of that mag... it sends the first round just fine.... He looks around to all of us, looking just a little more cocky... pulls the trigger for round two... LOL... NOTHING!!!!!!! LOL... Please note, this went on for years, him trying to prove this POS worthy of the price he paid for it.. I can say, it for sure broke his spirit, or maybe we did, by the amount of razzing we gave him.. He had worked on it... 3 different gun smiths worked on it, and each thought they fixed it and sent him on his way.. by year 4 to 6, there wasn't a gunsmith in a 1000 mile radius that would touch those POS's, LOL.... I need to call him, and ask'em if he still has that POS, or if he pawned those problems off on to somebody else? something tells me, he still has it, LOL... and is secretly working on that piece of junk in his basement, going the range all by himself, to test it, and when it fails, nobody will ever know... LOL... I am sorry for the novel, but, this one, had me rolling on the floor, what a POS... and your statement of 9 lbs .. yes, it was heavy... Also, I didn't know that was a gas system like that, which now knowing, I thing is clever, but tend to believe, that is part of the issue, why it is a POS.. Thank you for the laugh and bringing up old memories.... Lastly, one of the jokes we would razz him about, was calling his "WOLF"... "The Dash Hound or Wiener Dog".... Good times!!!

I'm an electronic technician. I repair industrial electronic equipment down to the component level. It's not just guns that the Germans and Austrians overcomplicate, It's EVERYTHING! I think they have a genetic code that presets them to live, work, think, and function on that part of the curve that is past the point of diminishing return (sometimes WAY past it). And yet, the Japanese can beat them at this game with better precision and greater reliability and juuuuust a smidge less complexity. BUT American made stuff, nowadays, is either affordable and crappy, OR very expensive, well thought out, dependable, and imminently repairable DON"T get me started on chinese crap (often defective out of the box, and sometimes toxic to boot) LoVe this video and the contrast between that Wolf and the 1911 I learned long ago to avoid German made ANYTHING unless it's really simple and AND I can get it dirt cheap (because, repair costs down the road) Simplicity = eloquence

1911 extractor tuning was the first thing I learned about when bought one. A properly tuned extractor and good magazines (personally I prefer Wilson mags) is the secret to reliability in the 1911 platform

Great Video. The firearms designs that have the cartridge slide up into the extractor are great and rarely break an extractor. The designs that make the extractor snap over the rim, almost always, include a separate spring to allow for a very hard temper of the extractor. Love the video and I wouldn't take that first pos all the way apart. Saturate with a couple of cans of gunscrubber and blow dry with the air hose. I don't think I have enough aspirin for that headache! Take Care and be safe, John

You were not kidding about the opposite end of the complexity scale that Wolf was over designed, overly complex and butt ugly to boot. The 1911 is a simple robust working firearm pretty much guaranteed to bang when you need it to. Thank you for explaining how the extractor is set up as I did not know that.

As for the untramatic, I have never handled let alone repair one, but as long as he gets it to work, then he obviously knows what he is doing. I am a big fan and love your work. How brilliant was John Browning? Gun manufacturers have been trying for over 100 years to design a fixed barrel/large caliber handgun that works as well as the Browning tilt barrel delayed blow-back. The Wolf is one of those designs that allow for a fixed barrel, delayed blow-back operation of a large caliber (9mm and above). Germany/Austria must love the concept because they invented the Luger. Modern designs have produced the Korth, Wolf, and the HK P7. The Korth is a caming/roller delay and the Wolf & P7 are gas assisted holding the slide forward just long enough for the gas to escape safely. ALL 3 of these designs are very expensive, but not without their own issues and complaints. The 1911, Glock, & CZ etc. have proven to the world that Browning's designs are still better 120 years later.

I saw an Ultramatic in a gun shop in Simi Valley about 30+ years ago. Paul's Gunsmithing if I recall correctly. I passed on it; too expensive and it looked complicated. I bought a new Sig P210-6 instead some time later. Very happy with that buy.

Good heavens, what a mechanical nightmare that Austrian thing is! Just goes to show how clever Browning was. There are so few parts in a 1911, and it really surprised me the first time I took one apart. I found out about the critical nature 1911 extractor tension when I had one break a couple of decades ago. I couldn't locate a new one (I live in NZ), so had to make one from scratch. Got it to work fine and some 10,000 rounds later it was still working when the pistol and I parted company... for all I know it's still in there doing the bizzo. Just for interest, I made that extractor from a bit of 1/4" music wire. It's tough to work but is lovely and springy and did the job well....

Very exhaustively detailed on the extractor. Thank you. I have a couple of pistols with minor feed problems that I am going to look at from a different angle.

Since I've only seen two of those pistols....One is in unfired condition in a private collection.... And the second, with maybe 100 rounds through it (mild to medium level handloads, since factory loads failed to feed/fire reliably on a regular basis), which served for about thirty minutes, as a target pistol and was traded off pretty damn quick for a VERY expensive and accurate custom Colt's 1911A1 based pistol back around 1997 or so. Until I watched your video I was pretty much convinced that both of those pistols were prototypes that never saw "mass" production. A video that indeed educated this Old Goober! Keep 'em comin'!!!!

Regarding the 1911 extractor... The majority of replacement extractors sold through Brownell's and other suppliers are made from "tool steel," which is a silly term since there are so very many different tool steel types, but I digress. Mr. Browning (and the various armories of the day) specified that the extractor be made from SPRING STEEL. Big difference, fellas. Do some research and find the one guy out there who makes 1911 extractors out of spring steel, and you're 96% ahead of everything else. You won't need to fiddle with it nearly so much to get it to function properly, and it will hold its "set" many times longer than the tool steel extractors.

The Wolf was specifically designed for our entertainment, and you won't even take it apart. Mark, I'm infinitely disappointed!

That Wolf Ultramatic is deserving of some Forgotten Weapons love as well - never heard of it before this, thanks. Great summary of 1911 feeding and extraction too. Here's a challenge - so, I'm going to try some YT comments 1911 diagnoses. Problem: On LAST ROUND ONLY, this particular 1911 will often lock up badly. Round will feed, fire, but on EXTRACTION, the extractor seems to lose control of it without another round to 'fill the space' in the feed area, and it will jam up, with the rim of the round stuck in the magazine lips, at a 45 degree angle or so, and the case mouth being crushed against the upper forward edge of the ejection port. Malfunction clearance is hard - the magazine cannot be removed, requiring the case to be hammered downwards, the slide pushed forward to at least partially chamber the fired case, magazine removed, and cleared from there onwards. Attempted fixes: - Extractor tension checked (obviously) - complies with all requirements in this video, also modified an old case with a wire hook to measure force required to pull round out from under the extractor claw (similar to the Weigand extractor tension gauge set) - To rule out extractor 'clocking' (rotation of extractor in hole) a new firing pin stop was fitted to slide and extractor (now a tight press fit into both) - no rotation of the extractor seems possible. - Many types of quality magazine tried (from Wilson Combat, Ed Brown, to Mecgar etc), many types of ammunition tried - problems presents using all magazines, all ammo, again LAST ROUND ONLY, but not every time (probably around 50%-60% of the time) I realise this is waaaaaay too much to ask, a bit of a Hail Mary pass, but you never know - maybe somebody has had this before! I've obviously asked around, but everybody always comes back to those two problems above, which seem to be sorted. 1911 knowledge where I'm from is not as prevalent anymore as in the USA.

As cheap as my llama was it had features that were desireable for a 1911. Pivoting extractor beaver tail grip safety. That pivoting extractor comes in handy when single feeding wax reloads. It took a little tinkering to get it to run100% but not much.
