Hosed side by side barrels caused by hot dip bluing, and other circumstances. BOTH ribs prepped and re-soldered

Amateur hour here for sure. I worked on more weapons with the military than I care to remember. This included building custom one of kind pistols for retiring flag officers. I made more pistols and rifles than I care to even think of. But I made the barrels and I have a gun drill. What a mess but thats what happens in back yard workshops.

I'm a plumber and when we used to wipe lead joint we used a black pigment we called plumbers black (original name eh.) for the same reason. I don't have guns (well, I have a 1911 BB gun) or know really anything about guns, I just love to watch skilled people do proper craftsmanship and you sir are in the very top echelon. Love the videos and the information you give when performing your art! Thank you Mark.

Thanks for the video, Mark. Not exactly the same, but I just soldered the vented rib back onto my Mossberg 5500 with the help of this video. Never soldered before and the joint came out great, the sharpie tip really helped out. Just had to touch up the bluing that got ruined in the process with some cold blue. Couldn't get an exact color match, but doesn't really stand out from the rest of the wear and tear on the finish. All said and done, I'm in the project for about $80 to do something the local gunsmiths were quoting me at least a few hundred to do (more than the value of the shotgun).

May I ask the type/composition of the solder used?

You lack many of the tools used to regulate doubles. You should use ribbing clamps and wedges and once all is in place the entire assemble should be heated in a soldering oven. The expense or lack thereof a shotgun is not the question. Doing the job right and in the proper manner IS. I've re-ribbed and regulated many, many double guns Shotguns and Rifles. Their quality or price never came into the equation. Their function and shootablity was the paramount concern. I have fixed guns that the regulation was horrible. I had double gun that the left barrel shot left, right and the right shot very low. When I was finished it layed one pattern directly over the other at point of aim, as it should. It was a Stevens model 311, not a Parker, H&H or LC Smith to be sure but, it would outshoot most doubles. It's owner was so thrilled after his first hunt with the gun he brought me two others to regulate, a Browning SBS and an Ithaca SBS whose model escapes me right now. My friend, the ribs are to be put in place at the same time. Installing the top rib then going to the bottom is a very good way to loosen the rib you just installed. That is why you need ribbing clamps and wedges. Hense, the need for a soldering oven. One or two a year?? Young man, I do a few hundred re-rib and regulation jobs a year. Hense the reason I have or made all the proper tooling. One or two a year,,,, if that were the case young fellow, I would have long since starved to death. Proper bluing on a double gun is the cold rust process. A time-consuming process but, well worth the effort. I was actually hoping to see you blue this gun. Watching smith's(?) using Hopp's insta-blue always amuses me, and I think, there's a short cut that will come back to bite them.

would a car battery and jumper cables heat the barrels up enough?

Great video on soldering, one thing I learned doing body work with lead solder is if you use acid Flux you have to get every last bit of acid off the metal or it will rust. Some areas you can't get to , so in a year you have rust holes.
