Probably my favorite Monty Python sketch. It's so underrated.

"Sorry, but my client has become pretentious!"

The brilliant comedic acting by Terry Jones as the increasingly questioning general and Michael Palin as the increasingly frustrated prosecutor, is almost too good. The excellent writing combined with their exceptional acting skills are pure genius. Whenever someone tells me something that I'm not quite sure about, i think of this sketch and respond with "I didnt know there was a Basingstoke in Westphalia..."

With Monty Python, we never know how the sketch is going to end, which is makes it so rewarding.

I would like to see the entire world function on this level all the time because then there might be hope for us as a species.

“I’m in charge of this court. Stand up. Sit down. Say ‘moo’. See?”

Now THAT'S how you end a skit when you don't know how to end a skit!

How anyone in the room could keep a straight face after all that is absolutely incredible ..I was in tears..😂😂

This court has more logic than the ones in my county in Illinois.

It's not so often that you hear the phrase: "In with the skating vicar!"

"The futility of modern warfare and the hypocrisy by which contemporary government applies one standard to violence within the community and another to violence perpetrated by one community to another". Ouch!

This sort of world would make far more sense to me than the one I seem to be currently living in.

"Can I go home now?" Exactly the same as the Biggus Dickus scene in Life of Brian.

I am starting to suspect that this was not a real court martial in the British Army.

I must admit I have been watching Python for some 45 years ish, and i have never seen this clip before. Thank you for expanding my sense of humour a little bit more.

This sketch is now about 40-50 years old but can still make people laugh.

Always nice to see Terry Gilliam sitting in as an extra.

Used to watch Monty Python and the Flying Circus late at night when I was a kid. Remember watching the Spam sketch 😂😂. So much joy to watch these clips nearly 50 years later ❤😂

It’s taken almost fifty years to get that version of Anything Goes out of my head 😢

I love watching the extras try to maintain composure.

This is like Kafka or Philip K Dick, where everyone knows the song except you, there appear to be copies of Cole Porter and Basingstoke and the world is not quite the way you thought it was. It’s also a brilliant parody of Dad’s Army at the end, as the skating vicar arrives and it descends into music-hall reverie.

There will never be another Monty Python's Flying Circus

The perverse joy Palin shows when he loudly pronounces “Fish Bananas” is what puts me rolling on the floor!

Far more mature than the house of commons, and that's no joke!

This was the best thing about python sketches, you never had a clue which direction the sketch was going to take, it mightve been about idol to begin with but it ends up getting stuck on the tension between the judge and the prosecutor then just ends altogether on a bizarre song with a skating priest.

"How did he oblige them?" "He used to ram things up their ..." "Alright, alright - no need to spell it out." I haven't laughed so much in weeks. The setup on that joke is amazing. You're misled into thinking it will be something trivial and insignificant, and them ... bam! Honestly no-one has come close in using the English language for such comedic effect. Fry and Laurie had moments of genius, but the Pythons infused everything they did with effortless mastery.

This is scary similar to how the court system and lawyers in Norway work... They use forever to let the police go on like in this sketch and when it is time for the defense to speak there is no time left.

Season 4 had some of the best and most original sketches. I don't understand why Cleese got all fussy about the supposed loss of creativity that made him leave.

the one and only, greatest show on earth, Mmmooonnntttyy Python. I love this show I remember listen to it on the BBC back in the 70s. the great movies from the various cast have intertained me for decades. thank you the only way one can deal with all the absurdity in this world is thru humor!!!!

I wonder if the two Red Caps are extras or the real deal. If the latter, they must be having a major issue keeping straight faces.

There is no Basingstoke in Westfalia as far as I am aware of, although there is a Besenstock in Westfalia. In fact, there are several thousand Besenstock in Westfalia, as Besenstock is the german word for broomstick.

Of course I knew there is a Basingstoke and Southampton in Westphalia, but I never knew that the British Army got there before 1945.

This was the best episode of the 4th series.

I was court martialed in Osnabruck in 1982 for an incident in a German bar...this is a very accurate representation of Military law...4 months in Colchester and dismissed with disgrace from The British Army...never looked back...

Somehow it all makes sense now

This was so amazing well written and performed. At the time I thought it was funny but most of it went over my 17 year old country never been anywhere ass. I appreciate is so much more now.
