As someone actually really into sports (basketball) I thought Aokana really broke the mold in not just Visual Novels but sports anime/manga. Flying circus is a new and developing sport where META was still being figured out and GOATs were changing in each generation of players. The theme of "paradigm shift" was so perfectly shown in Aokana it reminded me of real paradigm shifts that happened in basketball (NBA) like when one player (Stephen Curry) showed that the 3 pointer was statistically more efficient for winning games back in 2014. Ever since then the NBA and basketball culture in general became more 3 point oriented rather than the 2 point oriented. That kind of attention to detail with the sport itself puts Aokana above even lauded anime/manga stories imo.

I have to say, Aokana gave my still favorite love declaration, Asuka's one. It was just so well done, I was in awe and after reading the VN a second time, the impact is still really powerful

I just finished Aokana 4 days ago and I can say this is one of my fav VN, and Misaki has become one of my fav characters ever.

Thought it was cool to see the MC be more of a coach than an active player. Don’t think we see much of that, especially in a VN format. Flying circus was engaging to see.

I'm not really into sports myself either, although I do like a good sports story when I see one. And this definitely works well in that regard. They do a great job creating, and really getting you invested in this fictional sci-fi sport. The characters are all great (despite the somewhat disappointing Rika route), and I love how they each bring something different to both the sports and moege side of things. I agree, Masaya is a good MC. I like seeing him strengthen his bonds with the girls throughout the VN, and the exploration of his dynamic with Aoi. And given that that's where a good deal of depth comes from, I was surprised to see him pushed into more of a side-character in the anime. It's still a fun show, but definitely loses a good deal of its depth IMO.

My only gripe with Aokana, is the fact that we did not get a real comeback from MC. With Asuka on the confessing scene he was really just showing off, with Mashiro we are "shown" that he's back on practice but as a first person view, so we don't actually get to see his sprite, with Rika in my opinion goes more for the coach route, and with Misaki is just a tease the whole time. Not even in both extras do we (Masaya fans) see him finally making an official come back, in extra 2 we get a glimpse of mMasaya all suited on but that was it. Other than that I really enjoyed the main game and both extras.

I have to say man, when i first played this game, i was so into Asuka`s route that i just didnt feel any motivation, after watching your review, i got that feeling, it`s been a long time i played, but oh gosh i gotta finish those other endings

Man Aokana BGM, opening Music, character heroine, plot story, Art, the background, its really has everything. everytime people wanna ask what Eroge/ VN to recomend, after Steinsgate, maybe yuzu soft stuff or Aokana.

Currently reading Aonkana myself and I’d have to say Rika is my favorite for exactly the wife energy she gives off. It’s too bad she doesn’t have enough screen time in the Common Route as the other girls (being from a different school), but that’s probably why the joint training episode is my favorite part, besides the Summer Tournament arc.

I've read this one. it is a masterpiece, and my number 1 recommendation to anyone who want to try reading Visual Novels. The art, music, characters, and voices; EVERYTHING IS GREAT! The anime is not as complete as the vn, but it still give me chills: especially the 12th episodes when Asuka is being so cute and cool at the same fcking time. Really, i lost my mind on that eps. Overall, yea, this is great. Its long, mind you, but you'll regret nothing. ALSO RIKKA BEST GIRL! SHE DESERVES MORE LOVE FOR HER ROUTE! PLEASE GIVE ME RIKKA FANDISC AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I don't have much to say, but I wanted to bring up something interesting about the company that made the VN. Aokana's developer, sprite, had a rough time after they made this, despite its critical success. It's sad that they had to shut down and liquidate, but then came back to finish Aokana Extra 2 (after it had been canceled). In the end, with a full decade plus of time, they've only made 2 Full VNs (Koichoco and Aokana) and 2 Fandiscs (Aokana Extra 1 and 2). I wonder if that's the end for them.

It was the first vn that i ever read. It was what started me down the rabbit hole that is vn's. It was all because of the anime that left me wanting more and the fact that it felt incomplete, so I searched for the source material, and the rest is history.

They do a good job playing with the sprites to make the action look better. I just started so can't wait for the story to pick up. Wonder how the sport actually works lol seeing a lot of AT fields in the anime clips I watched.

I discovered your channel recently and really expected you'd cover this game. It's been my favorite VN for 5 years now, the fact it's just picture and text but you feel like it's moving makes is so good imo. I just finished EXTRA 2 a few days ago and it was over my expectation, I understand why it even gets better score than the main game on vndb. Misaki is best girl btw.

This was my first ever VN, and even though I’ve read quite a few excellent ones since then, Aokana is still my favorite one. For anyone curious about the read order, I’d personally recommend taking them in the order that the story offers them to you. Asuka’s ending makes the most narrative sense, so I say it’s best to do hers first. Mashiro and Rika can be second or third interchangeably. But Misaki’s route should definitely be saved for last. And I may be I be the minority, but I keep coming back to Mashiro’s route. It’s so unabashedly adorable and full of feel-good energy.

For anyone who read Misaki's route, I HIGHLY recommend reading Aokana EXTRA2 as well. It's so much better than the main game. It has everything I wamted to see from there, and the sport action is so much better too. It's an absolute must-get. I don't even care if you didn't like her route. Deadass, Aokana EXTRA2 is my top 3 visual novels of all time

I'm still in the common route (chapter 4 I believe) but I'm having a blast reading this. As you said, the random fan service scenes are weird but at least the art is amazing. Mashiro is currently my least favorite girl right now (most of her character is her being a simp) but I plan to do her route first, so maybe my opinion of her will change. Will do Asuka last since she's best girl right now Also, kind of weird that this is the 3rd VN I read in a row that has a girl named "Misaki" in it (the other two being from Fureraba and Chrono Clock). Someone recommend a VN that doesn't have a Misaki in it (or one that has one lol)

Damn! Feels just like yesterday! Finished reading Aokana 2 years ago(around feb 2021) and was gonna pick up Extra 1 But Didn't because of 2 reasons: 1) Aokana Extra 2 Hadn't been released at that time and was not feeling like reading Mashiro's after-story without Misaki's after-story. 2) Have been ging through a VN Burnout For awhile(Almost 2 years now.) and by the time misaki's After-story dropped I still wasn't Able to Pick it up back up because it had been a long time since reading the OG Aokana even though I wanted to. But your Video may just be my last trigger for Reading both of these Extras that have been sitting in my vndb backlog. My question is: Should I only re-read Misaki's & Mashiro's in Original Aokana Game or every single route again OR Just get straight into the Extras?

Ah man, Ive tried to read and like Aokana so many times now that I ended up reading all the routes anyway... If youre like me and you get frustrated and lose interest at typical shounen writing tropes, especially in action scenes, instead of using those tropes to get more into whats going on, Aokana gets to be a really frustrating read cause its hard to just enjoy it for the romance too since Masaya is dumb as rocks around girls from start to finish. I get why everyone else loves it, just isnt for me I guess

Aokana is a good VN. But Asuka is not driving force for me. She is actually biggest weakness of the VN if i had to say. She is textbook example of Mary sue. Probably worst one i have seen in a long time. And her story while it flows decently resolves in most dumb Deus ex machina twist possible. Urgh.
