How do you read so many visual novels? I guess it's hard for me to manage my time between anime, games, and vns. It's just so damn impressive you've gotten through. With that said, I really need to make Chaos; Head a priority. I can never get enough of serial murder psychological horror. And Sanoba Witch looks cute like a cute story.

Listening to the sections for the three I’ve read, I don’t see any reason to believe he actually read these himself, it’s pretty generic stuff that could be paraphrased from any online review.

It's actually pretty simple. I just clock in at least 1 or 2 hours of reading every day. Do that enough times and you'll blow right through the VNs. Even Umineko lol

One of the visual novels you marked as best in 2022 was exactly what I was searching for, and I spent my time really well(I read Cyanotype Daydream). Great tierlist as always, my favorite visual novel youtuber by far. I sadly don't have much time for VN's the last year and a half besides the occasional few, but its always great seeing the your videos. I ended up picking up loopers from this video and can't wait to try it soon.

I only read Stella of the End this year because I was busy but I also read Empty Box and Zeroth Maria which is a light novel. After reading the whole series I stumbled upon your review of the final volume. It made me appreciate your content even more. Keep it up 👍

Mahoyo is really bordering on being an TV level of production. If the characters could actually move and you cut the text down you'd have a nice looking anime on your hands. Crazy.

great video. i'll have to check some of these VNs out after i've finished remember11. my favourite VN out of the ones discussed in this video has to be chaos;head noah, which i consider to be overall a masterpiece. edit: i watched your video on tokyo necro a while ago, and i put it on my steam wishlist since it ticks all the boxes for me (science fiction with horror elements). i think i'll check out ginka at some point, too. i don't care that much for stuff like bible black or maggot baits, though - eroge in general is something i'm not that interested in.

You really summed up my exact feelings for Mirai Radio. I was super excited for it cause the plot sounded really interesting and unique, and I fell in love with the art style from the first translation announcement. But ended up just feeling meh at the end. I picked up Cyanotype Daydream after watching a few of your vids, and I went a solid 7 hrs unable to stop reading it gripped me so hard. Massive increase in quality.

What's interesting is that Key and Ryukishi collabed once before with Rewrite, but most of Ryukishi's work was on one of the five heroine routes (though you can still see his influence throughout, and of course Key were a big influence on all his work too).

Really, rewrite? But I will give a real critic of Looper, Looper was so bad, that it make me cringe and thinking that I thought after Summer Pocket they will make a visual novel that are better than Summer Pocket Keys work always been so good with their Story Building, like the place, and it's history, and how the world "work", look at Little Buster and Angel Beats, you can see how they create the world, and even rewrite, it had it's history, don't remind me of Clannad. Summer Pocket had no lever with these giants, but summer Pocket has it charm and story building But here it is, Looper sorry was made like that Wattpad user, the story paced so fast, we didn't even get to each other character backstory, it's different with giant like Rewrite. Looper only focused more, "How do I end this story." Instead of, "How do I make the audience having fun and making memories?" Remember, almost every Keys work related to Friendship, look at Little Buster and Angel beats, they have so much memories that make you cry, and here is Looper, only focused on the MC and the Heroine, and they end it in the most cringe way

i'm a simple man: I see Aokana in the list, I like. Joke aside, while it's been almost two years since I last read a VN, aside for Tokyo Necro that I'll have to redl and redo some routes on skip cause of a pc malfunction, Aokana's surely among my top favorites. Story, comedy, each routes being friggin' good, artwork (those cut in and those color works, zamn), and while often discret, some scenes had one of the most epic or sweet OST I've ever heard in a VN (some of the end game match themes

I finished ao no kanata today and I realized that there is not a single VN out there that can match the quality of its visuals. It looks absolutely gorgeous and the main theme, wings of courage, brings me goosebumps and tears everytime. Thank you for your recommendation on this one, I enjoyed it a lot, not a 10/10 story, but at 7-8 imo.

Man seeing Aokana being discussed and Sprite back from closing and even making new series(although still no sign of Zwei) is incredible. I Hope the VN can get to mainstream like the anime did and more people actually experience the incredible mix of sports and romance in Aokana.

Sucks that Asuka never gets a Fan disk route. Misaki and Asuka were pretty much equal to me in terms of heroine but extra 2 blew the scales away hard. I also slightly prefer the Misaki route in the OG game cause i think covering each other weaknesses is something a lot more relatable than an inspirational source for me atleast. Still would love to see more about Asuka and Masaya Lovers Rivalry relationship in the fandisk, dwells more about the love of the sport than the competitive side of it like Extra 2

Some neat stuff here, and some I'll easily stay away from. One VN that I really enjoyed this year that came and went without much chatter was Hush Hush. In January I took a gamble on Seabed and I was blown away how it handled mature subject matter and the overall mystery though a simple premise made the conclusion more impactful and one I won't forget anytime soon. Have you heard anything on Curse Of Kudan?

I can not wait for Asuka's extra in aokana. Aokana has alot of nostalgia for me having been my first visual novel. It was All thanks to me going through a sports anime craze and finding the anime and being curious about the source material, the reason for me searching for the source material was because I liked the concept and felt like something was missing. I just started ginka (and am not gonna watch the review because i dont want to spoil myself,) and i'm seeing a lot of similarities already. I've read konosora, the star one, and atri. Atri was super cool and did a ton of things right, but also missed some important things that kept it from being great - mainly, that the plot didn't seem finished and ended just as it was starting. Since it seems like you've recently read Chaos;Head and haven't read Chaos;Child yet, I'd like to say that Chaos;Child is one of my all time favorites. It is very different from Chaos;Head though, personally I thought Chaos;Head was a lot worse.

GINKA fell into the problem of being too ambitious. I felt like it kept things simple, it would have worked out in terms of the main dynamic Planning on reading Chaos Child later this year hopefully!

I read Aokana and Extra 1 this week and i have the unrealistic hope that one day will come an Extra 3 about Asuka what will fix Asuka's Route. The other good thing about an Extra 3 would be that we could see more from Aoi and Masaya.

Im doing more reading now currently deep into tale of genji and about to start the divine comedy but still got lots of visual novels to read. Chapter 6 of Higurashi for me (im a few years behind the times on stories lol but they are amazing). Ill definitely make a not of some of these though and maybe get to them in a few years ;)

Great video man. I loved concept of Aokana, but I run into the "Romance" issue of the Visual Novels. Basically a visual novel has a great main story, but it has ONLY HEROINE ROUTES. Which means main story is EITHER spread around in these routes and you are forced to read them in order which shoots the selling point of visual novels, choices, in the head, OR main story is focused in one girl's route and other girls are tacked on, or it is abandoned ENTIRELY. I mean this whole video's majority is about romance novels. I kind of want a novel with an independent route, which focuses on the plot, or MC. If I were to use Aokana as an example imagine: Aside from just having four heroine routes it has fifth route the "Masaya" route where there is no romance at all and the whole plot is about Masaya overcoming his trauma and building the greatest team in history and winning. Basically a pure sports anime. That would have been GREAT. Do you guys know novels like that?

I like the video. I just wanted to add a couple comments. 1. This may be an unpopular opinion, but to me only the first Grisaia is worth reading. I hated Yuuji and don't care for the plot, but I liked the girls and their routes were worth reading (for the most part). But everything else is not for me. Grisaia was better with routes and no overarching plot. 2. I'm happy you covered an older, infamous VN like Bible Black this year. I hope other retro VNs can be covered sometimes. I know covering more modern ones are better typically for a review channel, but I just figured I would say that retro ones are neat to see. 3. I was also surprised by the quality of the official Sonic VN on April Fool's Day. I typically agree that jokey joke Western VNs are mostly bad, but this was nice, especially being free. 4. Paranormasight was one I checked out. It was flawed, but a neat experience. 5. Aquarium getting an English release was a HUGE surprise when I heard about it. I'm a big Hololive fan, so I'm happy to experience it.

Regarding Grisaia you're necessarily alone. I know plenty of people who similarly hate Yuuji and many I've seen agree the Grisaia games after the first ones just couldn't capture the same magic as the first one

Hi August, I heard your thoughts on the furry genre, and I completely understand. Like you said though, there are some hidden gems. A furry visual novel called Echo is one of the best things I have ever read, I had never consumed any sort of furry media before reading it, but I heard a friend call it peak, and decided to trust it. Turns out its one of the most well written psychological horror dramas Ive ever experienced, giving a brilliant exploration of trauma and how the past affects us. Completely understand if you'd rather stay away from anything to do with furries, but I just thought id put it out there

I know your chanel 3 years ago when I was in the university while you are reviewing Atri. Then I was back to my study and forgot about your chanel. Someday 2 month ago, my friend told me to read Stella of the end since he was bought it on steam and wanna share me to read cuz he have done it. It was quiet ok at my though, the story about peoples and humanoids are good, the end is sad but it for the grown up of female character. But I want more felling than this Visual Novel and found your chanel again. I saw Cyanotype Daydream in your chanel review 2022 and was looking for it in Visual Novel Database. It was so high with 8.5 scores. So I take my time to read it. Though the story I have feel every emotions I got. Sad, Depress, Hope, Strange... And the end is make me feel happy for this game. 100/10😂 I am currently reading Ginka and a visual novel was release long time ago is Re:LieF. Its cannot bring much emotions for me but it's Ok about what the author wanna bring us. Seeing Ginka in this list make me happy. Got your great job, August Hail. 😊

chaos;head's beginning is faster than most visual novels i've read, it jumps straight into the point unlike many other ones that dump loads of exposition on you (which is not always a bad thing btw)

Just finished loopers toady. I hop in and expect a long visual novel but it finished so fast. Idk man, I think the ending supposed to be sad but I can't get into it cause I haven't invested deep enough and have a feeling for the characters.. (Newbie opinion forgive me. I expect too much after playing summer pocket + RB)

Well, this is first video on your chanel, and this is interesting content . I did not read a lot of visual novels ( Nasu's vn's, when they cry series and steins gate ) And it seems we have different tastes . Cause... In all these novels I dislike slice of life. Really , this was the most boring part for me. In Mahotsukai ( which I liked ) when I read slice of life in 6-7 chapters I screamed in the middle " Give me more magical theory ! ", or mage action thriller that I love

White Album 1 is honestly so frustrating to me. The good parts are really good, but the dating sim elements and the way they're executed made for a very tedious experience that sours the experience. I did Yuki's, Rina's, and Sayoko's routes and each one was very enjoyable, with Sayoko's definitely being the one that hit the hardest. I don't regret my time spent on this VN at all, but I'm not rushing to do the rest kf the routes ir reread it any time soon.

It's actually pretty simple. I just clock in at least 1 or 2 hours of reading everyday. Do that enough times and you'll blow right through them!

I LOVE LOOPERS no on asked but I want people to know that 😔🙏 while I enjoyed my time with and love the characters, one specific song, and ABSOLUTELY LOVE the art and designs. My biggest takeaway from that game was learning about geocaching. I would later, about a year later (so a couple months ago) bring this game up in passing trying to recommend him a non-lewd visual he could play on switch. And he told me he knew about geocaching himself, got hype on the idea of it and started geocaching ourselves. having a really good time. I would lend him my physical copy but of course that motherf*cker still hasn't played it. 😮‍💨😅

You dislike overcomplicated lore? Oh man, I was about to recommend you Girls Frontline :/ Mahoyo was a realy blast, waiting more than years to get it outside Japan was 100% worth it. I can't wait until Tsukihime Remake gets the other routes to buy it on Steam as a whole package.

Thank you for the tier list! I've wanted to read Ginka, but I'll wait till summer time. I always crave those types of VNs during the summer. I'll definitely be getting Tokyo Necro. I loved Muramasa. I'm still on the fence about Loopers. I love both key and Ryuukishi07, but idk about a Collab between them. How did you feel about the protagonist in WA? I've always heard negative things about him, which prevented me from reading the VN. I mean, Haruki from WA2 was not exactly likeable imo.

Touya is pretty unfaithful, considering he flip-flops between proclaiming to love his girlfriend and then flirting with the other girls around him. Add that with his relatively depressing thoughts and lack of self-confidence and he can be frustrating to watch.

It messed up my original game too it's all Japanese with constant errors now. DId you play the after stories? if so how did you manage to do it? Please help me out T-T I appreciate it!

(SPOILER WARNING, general thoughts on Chaos;Head Noah's character routes) I'm glad to hear someone else say they didn't enjoy the character routes in Chaos;Head NoaH. Each of them made me feel like I was reading a lousy fanfic. Everyone acts like a caricature of themselves, the overall quality of the writing ranges from mediocre to downright awful, and the plots of each route rely on decisions and coincidences that make no sense or have little basis in the actual story. They just feel so tacked-on and irrelevant. I did really love Chaos;Head overall, but I think that it was better off without the character routes.
