Finally compiled some video for the Cobra build which I'm very much enjoying. Hopefully it helps others in the process of looking to buy/build!
Apologies for the length of video;
Not a seem-less storyline as it's a bunch of things shot over a few months.
Similarly, the dialogue and editing is fairly un-filtered so expect some errors or corrections as necessary.
Cheers, Rob

I worked at Absolute Pace making the bodies a while back, definitely the car at the top of my bucket list, LSA and a six speed for me, just like the one I went for a ride in.

One more thing; a tapping tip-if you follow your through-hole tap with a blind tap, you can cut thread almost to the bottom of the hole, so you only have to drill a bit past the bolt depth.

Shazzy shazzy shazzy! Great new build! Love the safety glasses for drilling and the thong clad feet under the teetering hub assembly... 😅😅 Live the vision you have for this. Should look class when done 👍

@@rob105motorsport for some reason I stopped getting your video notifications until this one, but looking back it appears as though you never closed our Ultima build and there wasn't much post what I'd seen... looks like since you have a new setup too... have I missed something or did you go dark for a few months?

Thanks David! I'll try and keep these videos flowing. I don't much enjoy the editing portion and it's made harder when I get sporadic work sessions on the cars which means all the footage is disjointed/unplanned. New workshop is getting there though so that'll hopefully free up some time. Cheers!

@rob105motorsport
@rob105motorsport Жыл бұрын
@@davids8493 Definitely happy to do a shop tour. Ultima is 'finished', but just a couple of problematic components (DOA or not fit for purpose) that mean it's been to the dyno twice but not been able to be tuned. Each time there's a wait for a replacement part and then a wait to get a dyno booking etc. as well as getting a time to fit in with other work. Painful, but we'll get there before long I hope!

Woohoo! You’re back. I was still wondering if you were above ground or had gone walkabout. How about an update on the Ultima? I think you left things off where you were readying the car for the dyno.
@rob105motorsport
@rob105motorsport Жыл бұрын
Thanks Dalamar. A bit of walkabout (and giving some love to other cars). Update on the Ultima will hopefully not be too far away. It's 'built' and been to the dyno twice only to find components that were dead. Each time a 700km return trip and then a 3+ month wait on a replacement component so I can then book in at the tuner again with an 8 week lead time. Super frustrating, but also a first world problem! Cheers

@@rob105motorsport Thanks Rob. I found their website. Thirty years ago former GM chassis engineer Herb Adams published "Chassis Engineering" which included a design for a monocoque-style Cobra (Adams actually built the car). The Absolute Pace version looks similar. Lots of torsional stiffness in the vertical. Keep the videos coming.
@rob105motorsport
@rob105motorsport Жыл бұрын
@@mchristr Interesting. I'll try and track a copy down! Definitely a world apart in terms of chassis rigidity in comparison to a 'genuine' Cobra. That's not taking anything away from an original either. Era correct cars capture a particular time in history and that's part of the enjoyment/experience. That's why I think both have their place.
@mchristr
@mchristr Жыл бұрын
@@rob105motorsport "Chassis Engineering" is a pretty basic survey of chassis and suspension theory and design. You're certainly past that point but it's still a good read. Cheers.

Thanks mate! Hard to find motivation/time to do the videos sometimes. I don't think you're alone with the love for the later generation cars. Side pipes, flared guards, bonnet scoop etc are hallmark items from that generation. It is a new shop. Slowly taking shape so I'll do a bit of a tour once it's clean/sorted. Cheers!

Any more videos coming soon? I'm keen to build one of these with an LS3 / 2.9L Whipple combo, and I wanted to see if you had any other issues. So far, the kit looks great and the issues look minor. One idea-600mm adjustable G-clamps would help with your suspension compression. The only other thing is, I've fitted Superpro poly bushes to my cars and rate them highly. One thing they say is to lube up the outside of the bush as well. It's not a rotating point in the assembly, but the slight deformation of the bushes under load can cause squeaking. I've done it this way and never had an issue. Each to their own, I guess.

@rob105motorsport Ай бұрын
Hey mate, I have so much unedited video but I've been super lazy sorting it. Definitely a few issues, but mostly minor. I've installed the engine and I'd have to say it is the hardest time I've ever had dropping one in. Agree with you about the poly bushes and lubing them to avoid squeaking on the outside. Hopefully have some more videos up soon! Cheers

Looks like the suspension was designed to work on a race track having rebuild other peoples ideas over many years (53) as a mechanic after a 10. 000 hour apprentice ship i can assure you that cat will bounce and shake and shudder your steering and break or wear out those ball joints in very short order i used to replacw them every season on one race car ( a 1971 corvette) all 12 in the rear suspension or about a 1000km

Any chance that the rear shocks could be installed the other way up as this may place the spring perch and damping adjuster above the top crossmember?
@Paul_VanGo
@Paul_VanGo Жыл бұрын
Well, hopefully there will be zero rotation on the diff bushings, otherwise you did something wrong 😄 But for suspension bushings the advice is sound: only grease the inner part of a PU bushing.👍🏻 Oh, and what about mounting the coilovers upside down? Assuming they are gas-pressurised, there's no functional difference, but it gives you a lot more room for adjustability. And at the front it probably wouldn't foul the fulcrum.
@rob105motorsport
@rob105motorsport Жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I did consider mounting them upside down, but it doesn't solve all issues and created greater dramas with the mounting brackets and access to damping adjusters. Worst case is that i'll pull the shocks, disassemble and machine/cut the shafts down so they reach bump before fouling. Cheers

Since you suspension and car are metric why are you mucking around with imperial bolts ...?
@rob105motorsport
@rob105motorsport 11 ай бұрын
Hi, Coilovers are US manufactured. With a combination of components from various suppliers it's one of those things you kind of have to expect. OEMs obviously have the volume/manufacturing control to design and keep things consistent in that regard. Cheers
