all my years in school, i've been told to bluntly state the three choices in my essay, like "[insert name] uses ___, ___, and ___ to [insert purpose]." I've never tried focusing more on the argument aspect of a thesis; this technique is so much more effective! Super helpful, thank you so much!

I thought the rule was to never specifically mention the words "ethos,"logos,pathos" in an essay

Yes, in general you should not use those words directly in your essay. It’s better to talk about appeals instead, but it’s not a hard-and-fast rule.

May I ask? Shouldn't our thesis contain all the rhetorical devices we plan to use throughout the essay? I saw how you only stated one of the rhetorical devices you plan to argue about in your essay. Shouldn't we make our thesis two/three-pronged?

You can write your thesis however you like, so long as you directly address the prompt and discuss how the author’s rhetorical choices help her accomplish her goals.

You said the thesis is placed at the end of the first paragraph, what would go before the thesis? I’ve always started mine off with the thesis, so i’m confused

I just put everything in one sentence (the situation and thesis) and that’s my first paragraph

You can place some context and description before the thesis statement to describe the rhetorical situation.

Question, I know you may not respond hours before, but don't you also have to write a Rhetorical situation of sorts?

That would be part of the intro, before the thesis (or so I was taught)

Yes, the introduction is a good place to discuss the rhetorical situation. You can also discuss aspects of it throughout the essay as you connect your evidence to your own argument and the writer's message.

Marco Learning It went great! It was a speech from senator danial inouye conveying why freedom of speech should be limited. Your videos have prepared me ten fold compared to what my teacher has.
