Rachel Maddow looks at why former Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm's legacy is as much about her fighting spirit as the fact that she was the first African-American woman elected to Congress.

Shirley Chisholm is one of the great women I 'channeled' when I was elected as the first black woman to Newcastle city council here in the UK in 1988 (a teenie tiny step in comparison) But it's lovely that MSNBC are giving her this space and great to hear her Barbadian lilt in the clips played. Lovely. Great show as always RM.

How times have changed. In November of 1968, I was 20 and a half years old, so I was too young to vote, because one had to be 21 before one could vote. So all you young folks out there, from 18 to 21 in the next election, take advantage of your right to vote. It matters.

@@desmofan1864 True enough. I was going to say I didn't mean to rain on your parade, but was just trying to put it in perspective. If after half a century of ""progress" a glimmer is all we getting, then I'm sorry if I don't share as optimistic view as you. Again, I'm not trying to take away from the positive nature your comment, but I'm just trying to better frame it. Of course we should all feel good, but there's still that underlying issue from more than half a century ago .. which has no plans of going away. I just wish I could share that same glimmer.

It's about time somebody talked about the great Shirley Chisholm. Forget Oprah. Read Shirley's book, "Unboosed and Unbought". One of America's true political heroes who has rarely been remembered or recognized in the general population. She was the first African-American candidate from a major party to run for President of the U.S. I bet they don't teach that in high-school history classes. She was a true leader. “When morality comes up against profit, it is seldom that profit loses.” - Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm, one of my heroes! She stated that she had faced much prejudice in her life. As a woman, and an African American. But she NEVER let it stop her! She was such a great woman. When George Wallace was shot, she even went to see him in the hospital. He was shocked to see her. (He exclaimed, "Shirley, what are you doing here!"). But, I really think she showed him what real humility and forgiveness was! Shirley Chisholm had guts!

That's funny the last month I started re-reading her first book title "Unbought & Unbound." I remember Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan. I watched as Robert Kennedy Sr. was shot live on TV. I remember when Martin Luther King was assassinated and having the National Guard stationed on our block to deter riots after he was killed. I remember walking everywhere during the bus boycotts, Kent State riots. I was a child but I have vivid memories of the civil rights, the equal rights (ERA), voting rights, Vietnam, and other social protests, of the 1960s. I remember seeing the Black Panthers, Hippies and Flower Children gathering to speak in the park (not at the same time of course). The 1960s was a period of social unrest and change that I will never forget.

I hope that this new Congress will immediately reverse Trump’s offensive tax extortions and put the people’s money back into the community, and right after they nationally increase the minimum wage to at least $12. It speaks the truth to our current state. I get that experience cones with age but in the other hand. We need talented people of the now as well. In these top positions of office. It doesn't make sense that people in their 60's and 70's. Dictate the future of our country. Just like we need our constitution to be more relevant with our current times. The constitution should be amended continuously. The outdated can't always apply.

Try singing this in the style of Tom Waits' A Foreign Affair. (good luck) I'll post this around for a couple of days... A foreign affair, juxtaposed, with a stateside, And domestically unapproved mendastic fancy, Was mysteriously redacted, due to circumstances Knowing, it would only be parlayed, into a misery. Under fear of contradiction, Rudy's pants produced a fiction A hankerchief of words...to fool a fence post, And drop the jaws of news hosts Collectively we wanted something more. A romance of relations Not a pool of undulations A foreign affair, accompanied in tandem With an administration random, Nesting dolls had lined the halls To slip inside each other, instead of run for cover A contusion of confusions instead of real solutions, The court doors spinning on their own As the public chews on Faux News rubber bones. Criminal intent the only cover sent To a family at the border under military order Chased by death and terror confronting Departmental error And now a man is cut up because he never shut up But his words will never let up Until the lies are strung up This flag of flesh that waves To a world above it's graves. A foreign affair, over time has slowly ripened With unending legal stipends Overflowing lawyers coffers With a sea of unholy offers By a bargain basement president Whose reason is the law is bent To help him win the hearts and minds Of a people that are so resigned That our future's been consigned To a corporate state unkind. A foreign affair, conceived in it's mindset That believes the world is best kept Separate, cold, and unadept At seeing itself a bad bet made By a man of many rooms yet Walled in and homeless.
