Sen. McGovern on defeating Nixon on Face the Nation

Sen. George McGovern (D-SD) says there's "no doubt" President Richard Nixon can be defeated on the May 28, 1972 edition of Face the Nation. Nixon would win in a landslide victory over McGovern in the Fall.

McGovern never really had a chance in 1972, but if he did he lost it when he threw his vice presidential pick Thomas Eagleton under the bus.

For sure. It pays to take the candidates time to vet candidates. Had he chosen Shriver from the start or Muskie, I think he would of pulled a few more states than just Massachusetts and D.C. Also, should of highlighted more of his war service. McGovern was a genuine hero during the war.

@@Doobydoobydoo1974 Well, BOTH Nixon and McGovern served in WWII. Heck, nowadays McGovern would be too conservative for the Democratic Party, and he was fairly liberal for his time.

@@aidengoosemorey3499He would, but he would probably think it ironic that politically correct identity politics have returned, since it was the racial/gender quotas of the Democratic convention that alienated many white Democrats and pushed them to vote Nixon. As McGovern himself said, "We opened the doors of the Democratic Party, and twenty million voters walked out"

I am retired military. I was on active duty in the Army in the late '70s. I retired from the Army National Guard in 2004 as a MSG (E8). George McGovern was wrong about many things. One thing he was right about however was American involvement in Vietnam. Even in the early '60s when he was a young congressman he spoke out against increased involvement in South east Asia. I am not a Vietnam vet but I knew lots of them when I served. The vast majority of them have told me that Uncle Sam never should have committed troops and the 57,000 Americans who died there died for nothing.

Soldiers who served in Vietnam are still dying from a horrible cancer of the bile duct caused by parasites found in south east asia. I lost my father in 2008. Please have your liver checked!!!

Trouble is he was so connected with ending Vietnam and frankly most Americans knew that was tight around the corner anyway ... which it was.

Refresh my memory. Two (2) US Senators out of 100 voted against the 1964 Tonkin Gulf resolution. McGovern was not among them. Same old same old.

Feel like Humphrey would’ve still polled better if he was the nominee in 72. Win or loss no question he would’ve gotten more states than McGovern with Vietnam still going on.

Humphrey got beat pretty soundly in 1968 though, as the electoral college score was 301-191 albeit he only lost the popular vote by around a half million. Granted Wallace’s third party was involved too.

i simply wished that then-(U. S.) Sen. George S. McGovern could have gained a tremendous amount of political traction over Nixon's involvement in the Watergate controversy, particularly in the aftermath that arose from the unsuccessful burglary attempt. The Watergate controversy erupted slightly less than three weeks after this interview on CBS' 'Face the Nation.'

He is a wonderful and honest man. He could not be capable of sacrificing kids school programs like some of those other cold hearted presidents. We need to not sacrifice schools and education for taxpayers money.

I agree with that statement. We probably wouldn't have Trump or Hillary today. The office of President would still attract the best of us instead of the worst.

@@UrMom-jb7vl Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Act all his support besides barely winning his home-state was by hicks in the Deep South, he also was the OG Reagan who blew up massive deficits and caused our debt to explode.

I cast my first presidential vote for George McGovern, as I had turned 18 only two weeks before the '72 election, and I had received my draft notice for the U.S. Army only a week before. I voted Democratic because my family were Democratic working class folks, and because I saw the Vietnam War as a fetishization of military power by top brass and, of course and above all, an adventure promoted by politicians in service to profiteers. I also thought that Richard Nixon was a crook, and distrusted Republicans generally.

"I am confident future generations will love America not because they were born here, but because of what kind of country we've made it" This feels very poignant today. I wish there were more politicians today with the genuine empathy and care that McGovern had for humanity. In a time of rising nationalism, we should look back on his words and keep fighting to build that kind of America.

He was different in this matter. McGovern was a patriot who fought for America. He naively thought a massive welfare state would solve poverty. A good, but deceived man.

Calling Democrats "far left" is generous. There is basically right-wing compared to the rest of the world
