My opinion, having detailed for the past 22 years, owning numerous vehicles and working on plenty over the years. If the vehicle has a good layer of protection then a foam or soap pre-wash is adequate. If the vehicle does not have good protection then an APC pre-wash is preferred. It really comes down to how prepared and slick the paint is as to whether you need to use harsher chemicals to break down bonded contaminants.

Good video and explanation Phil. I recently picked up the APC step from Pan the Organizer, but with a slightly different method to you. After initial rinse of vehicle, spray the APC on and let it dwell. Then straight over the APC (no rinse), apply foam wash and let it dwell. Then rinse which you are rinsing both the APC and foam wash off at the same time, leaving very little dirt and contaminants if any, on the vehicle for the contact wash. My car is coated with Opti-Coat Pro+ - 2 years ago. Cheers, Ozz.

To each their own. I will say that for a tough prewash, using the Auto Foam in an 8:1 solution is very thin. Try at least 2:1 or 1:1. Not saying that you should switch your method, just pointing out for those interested that in order to compare apples to apples, 8:1 is quite thin for an APC style wash stage.
@MirandaDetailing2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yeah I did in another video. I used it 1:1 and still thin. But I believe it’s supposed to be that way. Either way it’s way to expensive to use here in the US. Not worth it for us. I know our UK detailers love it because it’s cheap for them.

APC rinse all the way for cars that are neglected and/or are getting a sealant or coating anyway. I use the on board detergent tank on my pressure washer to spray APC on the lower half of the car (door handles down). If it's a cool day, ill spray apc all at once, let it sit for a few minutes, and then follow up with snowfoam on the rest of car. Finally pressure wash rinse the whole thing, this is all as a pre-wash step before doing a contact wash. I find that in most cases, this process removes most of the loose contaminates from the surface and just leaves me a light layer road down the sides of the car to deal with.
@MirandaDetailing3 жыл бұрын

@MirandaDetailing3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I have found out through experience that many of these “big dogs” of detailing don’t really hustle at detailing to make a living anymore. Guys like Larry for Ammo, Mike Philips from Autogeek and other are amazing and I have learned tons form them. We have implemented many of their methods but, we have found that some methods are unnecessary, they are just shown as options, not as a “rule of detailing”. Detailers have to make up their own minds and find what works for them and never accuse others of not “detailing correctly”. When those accusations fly it really breaks down the detailing community and causes Detailers to stop thinking for themselves, they now are forced to abide by these “dogmatic detailers” who are really just bully’s. It will show their true colors. So I will always be a realist and show the truth even if others bully us, I actively fight it to help others think for themselves! 😎👍🏼

I hear some detailers talk about how rinsing with just water on a dirty vehicle may cause scratches from the abrasion of the water pushing the dirt into the paint. I get so frustrated cause it feels like I need SO many methods and products to just wash my car safely at home... I think some detailers need to focus on the "KISS" method so that people wont get so frustrated and actually not be afraid to wash their own vehicles. I notice your videos are a lot less strict on what NEEDS to be done and you're more focused on what works for you and keeping it as simple as possible. Here's to hoping my $500 setup is good enough to wash my brand new car this week. First time ever washing my cars myself without going to those awful car washes! 😆
@MirandaDetailing Жыл бұрын
Yeah I used to drive myself nuts thinking the same thing…until a really thought about it. Many detailers follow others without actually using proper thinking abilities. I think about this: when driving at higher speeds and you drive through mud or dirt, it will wipe across your paint at high speeds….already causing scratches. Rising with water will not push it into the paint causing the scratches, the scratches are already there from driving! Nobody acknowledges this! 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️. That’s when I started thinking for myself and teaching others to do the same. 😎👍🏼

Phil you are a man of your word! Good on you! I am an APC pre wash person as you know. The BH Autofoam is cheaper in Europe so I think that is where this hype is coming from and to be honest and true to BH, they dont push it so much as Chemical Guys, Gyeon etc...they are actually a low key marketing group. In EU, BH is mostly know by UK detailers/ KZfaqrs. I tried the PIR 4% ratio and got great results at 1.85€ for that wash. Now my APC is Koch Chemie Green Star and I won't go anywhere else, whatever anyone says about their own APCs..(as you say, you should not bow to pressure...if it works, why change). I pay 43€ for the 11 Litre (2,4 gallons US) container of Koch Green Star. Diluted 1:15 or 1:10 and it means it costs 26-39cents per wash and that is if I used up 1 litre which is nearly impossible unless I got a monster US truck...rare to find in Finland :) ....so doing the math, I will save about 1.40€ per wash and approx 11 mins of time (30 sec spray on, 10 mins dwell time, 30 sec rinse off...ok this sounds crazy to a garage detailer but if you are mobile, 11mins is alot of money lost over the course of a day. So all in all, APC pre rinse is the way to go....unless you want to be a flashy Snowfoam detailer :)

From your video, I noticed you were very close to the vehicle with the pressure washer spray. Are you just blasting contaminants off that we’re not totally softened. Are you worried about damaging the finish? Here’s a thought: Spray APC on a dry vehicle. Let it dwell for 2 -3 minutes. Do Not Rinse! Apply a liberal coating of a quality car wash snow foam over the APC. Let the combination dwell according to manufacturers recommendation. Now rinse. Re-apply a second snow foam for your contact wash method. Finish as normal.

Hi. Nope it doesn’t reduce the effectiveness at all. It’s safer to pre rinse in our opinion because if any APC drops down on dry paint it can leave drip marks. It’s not a huge deal becasue even if some APC stains paint it can polished out with ease. But we eliminate that risk all together by pre rinsing. Since we mix our APC rinse 1:4 it’s strong enough to work even with some water be on the paint already.

But once again, having another product for pre washing isn't needed at all. Its nice and works and everything, but why spend money on that when our APC rinse method is fast and more cost effective? We counted all the costs and this is better for us and many others who have tried it. We have tried so many different APC's and soaps before and its all the same, so we choose the ones that are cost effective. No need to try everything people suggest to us. After many years we realize that it comes down to personal choice and technique.

@@MirandaDetailing that’s fair enough, as I’m in the UK I only pay £17 for 5 litres, the dilution can be an issue if you need the cleaning power and are looking at nearly a 50/50 mix. I’m a DIY guy weekend Warrior . Currently I have my 4:1 in the pump sprayer that came with my extra tough order 32 oz bottle. Going to try it soon but the weather is not the great in CT. Thank you

I use Extra Tough too. I apply it several ways...1) Put the spray bottle nozzle on a fine mist. Saves product and also works great. 2) use a chemical pump sprayer from a garden department, put it on a fine mist and spray. 3) foam cannon or IK foamer. Extra Tough is super foamy and foams very nicely in IK foamer but honestly, the fine mist spray is my personal favorite method. Takes less time and uses less product with the same end result. The other great thing about Extra Tough is if it is hot and the product dries, it doesnt etch the clear coat or glass. Just re-wet it and rinse it off or simply reactivate it with water and continue cleaning. These are my experiences.

I guess you would consider using a mitt to spread the apc evenly over the surface with a little hand pressure (after spraying it on) as just a wasted effort??? Also, using the pump sprayer guarantees the mix ratio on the surface to be exactly 1/4. Does using 1/4 in a foam pressure washer actually dilute the ratio due to all the water used?
@MirandaDetailing2 жыл бұрын
Hi So before we actually contact wash or touch the paint with any mitts or towels we do this pre-wash or APC rinse. We don't want to agitate anything until the APC has time to dwell and be rinsed off taking the majority of grit and grime away with it. Using the separate pump bottle does ensure exact ratios, while using the foam cannon it dilutes it more and its hard to get exact measures with it.

Do you now, APC rinse, every car, every time Phil? Snow foams alone really do next to nothing for cleaning. I was looking into a higher ph foam like Koch Chemie AF (9.5) ph. But they manufacturer and detailers say don't use it for every wash??

So to understand properly, do you rinse after you apply the APC? Or do you just foam it down with the foam cannon? Also, how long do you let the APC sit?
@MirandaDetailing3 жыл бұрын
Well as we demonstrated in the video. We rinse first, apply the APC, wait about 30-60 seconds depending on how hot it is out and if we are in direct sunlight or not. Then rinse that off, that’s when you saw the traffic film and grime on the paint blasting away. Then foam and wash per usual.

@MirandaDetailing3 жыл бұрын
Hi I would certainly APC rinse really well, that will break down sealants and waxes. Also If its a concern to you, before polishing you can use a strong panel wipe or IPA before polishing. But honestly, I haven't found that sealants or waxes gum up my pads. I'm not sure why so many people believe that. I used to read that a lot on the detailing forums, but never found it to be true for me. I have never run into that issues ever. When compounding and polishing that action removes anything on the paint including dead paint and residue and a little amount of sealants or waxes that still may be hanging on. But I have never found it to make a difference with my compounding or polishing. I little extra residue is my pads is always blown out with I use air to clean the pad. So maybe that's the reason I don't notice it or it doesn't effect what we do, I am always blowing out the pads and keeping them clean as we polish.

Hi. I have found that actually the original Apc rinse that we do using just the spray pump bottle can be more effective on really nasty vehicles. The foam does linger longer, but it doesn’t always clean better. It really depends on many variables, and one can’t say for a certainty that one way is better. Each has their place.

Genuine question: why do you rinse first with just water? Wouldn't it be more efficient to spray the APC and then rinse? And then simply move on to the contact washing?
@Steven-zr4it3 жыл бұрын
Pre-rinse removes the initial heavy dirt from the paint so the pre-soak can soften the dirt that can’t be removed from rinsing alone. This is so the pre-soak doesn’t have to work through more crap than necessary making it less efficient.

@M.E632 жыл бұрын
The foam on auto foam seems really weak in the foam canon in your video, being in U.K we do a pre wash and rinse then contact wash with 2 buckets, I use auto foam all the time at around 2-4% panel impact ratio which means we have to use a lot of product but it’s cheap enough so no big deal , normally need around 500ml product to reach the highest PIR ratio but normally I use around 300ml to 700ml water which is around 2-3% PiR

You're Welcome, the customer doesn't care about the truck box and told us not to worry about it. but because it is a textured spray if they wanted us to clean it we would simply wash with a soft brush and thats it. most times we see covers and liners that are in work trucks and they can be cleaned more aggressively, apc, soft wheel brush and thats it. sometimes soft tonneau covers we wash with a seperate mitt or MF towel, dry, and apply 303 Aerospace on it.

The only difference is that the APC-methode strips your car's protection (after a few washes)/stains the chrome/dry out plastics and rubber. The BH AF is for maintenance only and safe for the protection of the car.
@MirandaDetailing3 жыл бұрын
That’s true. That’s why we only use APC rinsing on vehicles that haven’t been detailed in a while....which is 90% of our work. I guess my questions started when you showed us after foaming with the BH, how little BH was used. That confused me, I would've expected the test on a much dirtier vehicle than your Avalon, i.e. the white truck, that you would have used at least 10 oz of both water and BH and not less, but that's just me. Also, if you had used the MJK pro for the BH it also would help because it looked like you used a water hose sprayer. But there is no two ways about it, that huge white truck was the perfect demo vehicle.
@MirandaDetailing3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I was told to use less BH in the foam cannon so I tried it this time to see if it made a differences using less. Last time I used the same foam cannon with a 1:1 ratio of BH on my personal car which wasn’t that dirty and well protected. If I had used the same 1:1 ratio on the dirty truck, maybe it would have cleaned better, but that wasn’t the point, I was told to use less this time on a dirty truck showing it would use less product and still work, which it didn’t for me. What do you mean by using my water hose foamer? I used the pressure washer and same foam cannon with BH each time, just changed the dilution ratio. I’m showing that using less of the BH product was covert effective for me. To use 1:1 again proves my point of use of way to much product. So here’s my dilemma, I have given in to what some of these people wanted me to do., instead of staying true to what I already know. Everyone is saying different things and wants to try it multiple ways, when I do someone is not happy with the results. So that’s why I teach people to make up their own minds and test the products for themselves instead of relying on someone else to do to. There are way to many variables to consider. I like to show people results for our methods that work for us. If they work for others great, but if they don’t it doesn’t mean that they or we are wrong, it’s just the variables that play a part in the results. I have another video we’re I use the BH once again on a nasty white vehicle using the IK foamer. It does work better this time at 1:10 in the IK foamer. Showing it was diluted to much from the foam cannon. However our APC rinse method was still just as effective and a cheaper route for us. I can’t be bias on a product that I am given a fair chance and giving in to what people here are telling me to do with it. If anything I’m not being fair to myself....I unfortunately gave into pressure from others pushing it in my face 😞. For that I’m sorry and I will no longer give into what people say about a product. The BH was sent to me by a fellow detailing here on KZfaq to try out not by the the BH company. I only show methods and results....the truth lies in the results. Thanks man trot listening. I hope it’s understood. I can’t give into what people say here anymore.

So an apc rinse would remove any wax or sealant applied on the surface correct? Whereas the bilt hamber doesn't necessarily effect existing protection? And if I am looking to try and strip the paint of any waxes or sealants prior to polishing, the apc rinse is still the best choice?
@MirandaDetailing2 жыл бұрын
