50 years ago, three NASA astronauts embarked on a journey that would take them “Round the moon and back”. The Apollo 8 mission proved the performance of the command and service module. This historic mission launched on December 21, 1968 to demonstrate a lunar trajectory and was the first crewed launch of the Saturn V rocket. On Christmas Eve, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders were the first humans to orbit the Moon and the first to see an Earthrise above its surface.

Apollo 11 was nice and all, but Apollo 8 was the first human crew to actually leave the Earth's orbit and travel to another world. That was not a small step but a truly giant leap.

AND the first time the Saturn V launched. Imagine sitting on a launch vehicle with over 1M moving parts that have to all work 100% at the exact same time?

vtangjohnee And no LM on the way to the moon for a backup. The SM engine had to work perfectly, every time, or they might impact the moon, or be flung off into permanent orbit around the Sun, sort of like the LM "Snoopy" is right now.

@@lachlancooke Why? Religion and science address totally different questions. The problem comes when people try and mix the two.
@cmbunit01
@cmbunit01 5 жыл бұрын
@@lachlancooke It really isn't sad. Christianity provides a philosophical moralistic framework, which all Anglosphere countries are built upon. It's also the written heritage of human oral tradition with origins in Babylonian and Sumerian cultures, and later Mediterranean cultures like Phoenician, Greek and Roman. Scientific pursuit seeks an understanding of the world around us, religion provides moral scrutiny. Even if you're not religious (as I am not religious), you're brought up with a moralistic system that is derived from the Bible - do unto others, honour thy father and mother, etc.
