Apollo Justice returns after a decade to grace our Nintendo 3DS systems in a remake of one of the the more divisive entries in the series.
In this video, I elaborate on my experience with the game and how my opinions changed over time, as well as the overall critical reception.
It goes without saying this is all my opinion and hope you enjoy my perspective.

I definitely wouldn't call AJ the best in the series, but it was definitely really fun for me. Changing around the franchise and making it feel like a different game was weird at first, although you get used to it quickly. Also the OST was absolute fire.

not the best agreed, but not bad. although Phoenix's investigation matrix thing at the end was pretty fun, I really enjoyed perceive, the only time it was frustrating was for Spark Brushell. and yes the soundtrack was AMAZING, guilty love is up there with the steel samurai theme. one of my problems though was what they did to Ema, although i guess the ruining of all your dreams comes with adulthood.

jv110 Really? Why are you surprised when I said Dual Destinies, I really didn't like the game, I think every case weren't that good, the story was basically playing it safe, there are some retcones, and the final villian was really weak, I don't see why this game gets a lot of praise IMO, in fact I have a lot of reasons why this game is my least favorite in the series.

Okay, First, we wanna talk about the main theme of Dual Destinies, The Dark Age of The Law, they say that it started when Phoenix lost his badge and then Blackquill was arrested for murder, this makes no sense since the previous AA Games presents the law and the courtroom as "Guilty until proven Innocent" which means the defendant is going to be already in jail whatever he/she did the crime or not, in AJ:AA , it was established that behind people's distrust of the legal system, is the law itself, something that DD ignored while tackling the Dark Age of The Law, instead we got the Phantom, who indirectly caused the Dark Age of The Law, a guy that did nothing for the Legal System at all, Second. the game decided to act that 4-4 didn't happen, the whole Jurist System that was used in order to bring back common sense to the Courtroom since 4-3 accused a blind child for murder because there is an evidence that proves he did it, they pretended that it never happened, despite Catching the Phantom and clearing Athena and Blackquill's name in the final case, it did change nothing for the Legal System, what it's back the same in the previous AA Games? the Legal System that everyone despises... Let's talk about the Characters, Phoenix who has developed through the main Trilogy and AJ is back again being novice, while he is 34 years old, it's like he forgot all his developments back in the office or something, Apollo, all he got from this game is a backstory about his dead friend and randomly accusing Athena for no reason, that's not a character's development, that looks like it was written by a nine year old, Trucy was reduced for a one note gag, it's like they shouldn't introduce Athena just yet until they finish their story,then they introduce her, because they ended up putting all the focus on her and her friends and her backstories, which Iit's less interesting, it's a recycled backstory about Phoenix and Edgeworth in the first AA, they also retconned the whole Black Psycolocks and said that Athena hides what she knows subconsciously that she forgot, which in a similar situation with Kristoph it made no sense, Kristoph already knows his motive, we all know his motive, so he wasn't hiding anything subconsciously. The cases: Case 1 hooked me up actually, it's was enjoyable despite my gripes on Phoenix's character, Case 2 is my favorite in this game, it was a decent case, after that the Game takes a complete nosedive from here with Case 3 being my least favorite in the series, this case was predictable in a sense this excessive foreshadowing of the real killer every 10 minutes, every time Prof. Means tells you "the end justifies the means!", every single time, that is annoying, every character in this case, either annoying or an anime stereotypes, a bunch of anime cliches that tells you to believe in yourself over and over and over, also this cringe scene where Juniper, Hugo and Robin remembering their symbol of Friendship, and how Friendship can beat the impossible, this case was insufferable that I wanted to end, Case 4 and Case 5 should have been the same case, and they are both terrible, as I already explained about the Dark Age of the Law, the Phantom, and the terrible ending that was Anti-Climactic, they Caught the Phantom, and in terms they "ended" the Dark Age of the Law, and everybody celebrates about it, really!? a complete let down from a really disappointing game. If you like the game, good for you, I'm happy that you enjoyed it, but as far as I'm concern, I really didn't enjoy the game at all.
@SinCity2100
@SinCity2100 6 жыл бұрын
Okay. The Phantom didn't cause the whole dark age of the law, the reason why Lawyers go corrupt because of the law itself, and no Blackquill committing the murder is anything new, we saw prosecutors kill before,Manfried, Godot, even in AAI and AAI2 we have also Calisto Yew and Blasie Debest as well, the world of law has a lot of corrupt people, so Blackquill being accused for murder happen and all the sudden it's the "Dark Age of The Law" The Jury trial wasn't only to clear Phoenix's name, but it's meant to fix the corrupted law, that was established at the end of case 3 fomr AJ:AA. I still believe that Apollo's backstory was really rushed, his relationship with Clay could have been better but felt rushed, in case 5 he was a non-factor to the case, yeah he invistigated on his own, but we didn't play as him during the investigation in order to feel more for him, instead of playing as Phoenix. I still think that Trucy got wasted in this game, because she really became useless in this game, all what she did is getting kidnapped in Case 5 and that's it. We know Kristoph was mad that he hated Phoenix so much so he did what he did, and now he didn't take it to his subconscious, he already know what Phoenix wants, he even spilled out his motive in the final trial in case 4, the one thing he didn't know that there was a Jury that was created by the very man he hated, Phoenix Wright, he even knows that Phoenix took him down in Case 1 is for revenge, revenge for what happend to him 7 years ago, so Kristoph wasn't hiding anything subconsciously.
@SinCity2100
@SinCity2100 6 жыл бұрын
A convicted murderer being allowed to stand in court may be somthing unfamiliar, but people already lost their trust anyway, because everything in the court of law is already corrupt anyway. Also, if you gonna have the whole relationship with Apollo/Clay being for 10 minutes only and then brush it to the side, then this is a rushed story, also I doesn't make me feel anything, on the conterary , Apollo/Dhurke's relationship is a lot well written because you can see them interact with one another and see their relationship, so it's heartbreaking when we found out that Dhurke was dead, unlike Apollo/Clay relationship which we saw a flashback and "yeah character developement for Apollo" , that's not a character developement, character developements doesn't happen if you throw a bucketload of backstories on a character, it's about what that character learns throughout the course of the story, and if he's gonna be a different man from what he was. that's why Phoenix's character developement throughout the Trillogy was well written.

I played AJ again recently too and my main issue with it is that is was obviously set up to have a direct sequel but never got one, as a result we dont have answers to a lot of questions that are left unanswered. The main ones being: whats the deal with Apollo's family and what is the origins of his power. Instead we have to settle for pieces of apollo in main series games which has even less time to develop him because Athena is now a thing. When it comes to the story, I think the main weakness is that Kristoph is woefully under developed and imo the game as a whole would have been well served to have a mini case like turnabout beginnings in T&T which gets to the heart of Kristoph because we really dont interact with him much because he's in jail for most of the game.

I think the main issue is that Apollo's presentation is weak. He rarely is the focus. Most of the focus is instead on Phoenix and his past. Even during the two filler cases where this is absent Trucy, Glavier or to some extent Ema are the focus. How many times are there in Apollo Justice when Apollo himself is focused on? Phoenix did have focus in the first game with him losing his mentor, feeling sympathy for Maya, confronting Red White, being shocked by his mentor coming back, bonding with her over their shared grief and vowing to continue Mia's legacy. Outside that case there is also him siding with Edgeworth despite others protesting, him feeling sad that Edgeworth changed so much, his unshaking belief in Edgeworth and all those things. I actually do still really want to know more about what Apollo's relationship with Christoph was exactly. That was never expanded upon. With Phoenix it was expanded with the inclusion of Dahlia and how Mia was there for him when he was helpless. Maybe that's another reason many object to the inclusion of Phoenix. Not just for what they did with him but for how he kind of steals the spotlight from Apollo. He also makes it impossible for people to detach themselves from the original trilogy and see Apollo Justice as a new beginning. The inclusion of Ema was fine as most consider case 1-5 non-cannon anyway and the other characters all hid minor roles.

@@MrMarinus18 Well said. If anything, I felt Apollo had more chance to grow and develop in Duel Destinies and SOJ, and had much more satisfying arcs in both games. It helps a lot that Apollo had way more chemistry with Athena Cykes than he had with Trucy Wright, who never got the chance to really shine as a character until in case 2 of SOJ, where she FINALLY was given the chance to properly react the bad shit happening to her.

I dunno, man. Turnabout Succession is one of the top cases in the series for me. And no it's not because of the Trial which felt kinda lazy. It's the buildup and finally seeing Phoenix's journey in more ways than one. There's so much to it but I'll stop here. They did explain Apollo's bracelet powers in the Mason system pretty well tho' even if you dislike the percieve ability. You gotta give credit where it's due. I wish Yamazaki knew what to do with Apollo but that's like Sonic Team knowing what to do with Sonic lately. But yep, Shu Takumi has said the point of the game was to "betray" or go against everyone's expectations of a Phoenix Wright game. To make it feel different from the rest before. I mean one look at Phoenix Wright already sets this up pretty well.

mechashadow ~ Thanks for sharing your opinion; it's intriguing to meet someone who sees the game differently. During the last case, Phoenix's situation seemed rather contrived, at least to me. Furthermore, it was explained that Phoenix understood their abilities, but it was never established why such a thing runs in their family. Maya's family are spirit mediums, what's Apollo and Trucy's excuse for such abilities? Finally, did Takumi really state that!? If so, I'm both shocked and glad; it was a conclusion I came to myself, but glad I wasn't imaging things, ha ha.

Jack's Melancholy Palace Apollo's Gramarye Bloodline felt more grounded in reality than Spirit Channeling ever could be. Kinetic vision where sportsmen see things slowed down in real time is an actual real phenomena in our world too. It just being more keen in the Gramarye blood is pretty reasonable to me. Shu Takumi didn't outright say the word "Betray" but he wanted a fresh new direction for the series by challenging what a Phoenix Wright game should be. Close enough. Also this game was a turbulent process to develop, so I feel some of those feelings kinda pass through to us in the game.

@@JacksMelancholy The problem is, the original trilogy was a trilogy. It had time to explore those themes. If only the first PW game was released we would say the same things. We wouldn't know the Fey family and all their importance if it weren't for Trials and Tribulations. We wouldn't know why Mia was so trusting of her clients and so calm all the time, never once breaking, if we didn't see the impact Diego had on her PW was the set up of the characters and themes. JFA is the expansion and build up of the story. And T&T is the conclusion. AJ only has set up. Dual Destinies served as a sort of soft reboot with new directors and it broke the flow I'm sure if we had gotten a "true" sequel from takumi, we would have learned more about the Grammary family and the accident, better explored Klavier and saw Trucy and Apollo learning the truth. We would also see the thematic pay off of the questions it posed about the law insted of "dark age of the law go brrr"

I don't know. Case 4 never really felt that underwhelming for me. I wholeheartedly adore the creepy and unsettling atmosphere both during 4-4 and 4-1 brought both by the characters' motivations (Kristoph, "Shadi" and Phoenix) as well as the soundtrack and overall color schemes. 4-2 is a case that I really enjoyed experiencing the first time through, and still manages to make me laugh a little. It certainly has one of the most unique beginnings, of that we can be sure (*cough* *cough* panty-snatching *cough* *cough*). 4-3 was alright for me, nothing really that special. Overall, I find this game to be a pretty solid entry. From here on out, spoilers to Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. What I dislike about it, though: First of all, I don't buy that we don't see Maya, Pearl, Edgeworth, Gumshoe, or any of the other people Phoenix had befriended during the trilogy not being there for him at all after he just lost his badge (during the brief time we play as him in 4-4). The closest thing to a cameo that we get for any of them (not counting Gumshoe during the trial since Phoenix still had his badge there) is seeing Maya's DVD collection for Phoenix during his stay at the hospital in 4-2. I honestly think that the brief section spent as Phoenix after he had just lost his badge to be an immensely wasted opportunity: I would have loved to see Phoenix doubt the people in his life, at least a little (I think it would be a warranted reaction, albeit not the right one for him to have). It had to have been a pretty lonely situation for him, and the whole time we don't see anyone calling him or checking up on him right after the fact... I honestly think it would have made for a good little bit of drama which would have showcased a little bit of what Trilogy Phoenix must have felt like before becoming who he is in the current game. Has anyone ever thought something along those lines? Second, I liked the twist about Apollo and Trucy at the end, but why in the world set it up when you're not even going to follow through with it in the following game?! Seriously, I vaguely remember the two of them hanging out together at the beginning of 5-2, only for then to have Trucy leave the whole time to leave the spotlight to Athena (who I still like, don't get me wrong). The things that bugs me the most about this is that I barely remember Apollo and Trucy spending time together in that game, and also, Phoenix is keeping the very important fact that they are SIBLINGS from them for no reason whatsoever other than what seems a writer's mistake or bad memory. Moreover, now Apollo seems to have left the crew temporarily to settle in Khura'in, and once again, both him and Trucy are none the wiser about the two of them being related for once again no reason whatsoever! While Dahlia's sudden appearance in 3-1 only causes minor inconsistencies in some of Phoenix's reactions during the first two games, here the writers wrote themselves into a corner. I seriously dread having Apollo and Trucy finding out the truth now, of all times. How could they ever forgive Phoenix from keeping such a secret from them for so long?

I’ll agree that the final case certainly has atmosphere. My issue was mainly the lack of focus on Apollo and how the end of 4-3 felt unearned, especially with the inclusion of the jury system. The points are very well developed, but I have to disagree on many of them. I understand that Mr. Wright had a huge hand in what gets done, but I'm glad there's a difference from how PW developed Phoenix here. If they repeated the same development Phoenix had for Apollo it would be stale in my opinion. Apollo also does more than many give credit for, and even though the reasoning behind his inclusion is rather poor, I love Phoenix in this game. Also, I think using people's general thoughts on case 2 is a poor way to convey that you found it boring and of poor quality. Now, I understand that the final trial is underwhelming, but I never found the jury system as a contrivance for Kristoph's murder with how it is teased and connected to the PowerPointImean MASON System. I feel that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is an excellent entry in the franchise, but one thing it botches is a balance of simplistic and deep storytelling. I feel that many misunderstand moments of the game and that's why some find certain things silly and stupid while others find them marvelous and intruiging. I can't explain this well in a KZfaq comment at all. ;) Anyways, your opinion is completely valid! I... just see a different game in AJ: AA. I think we can both agree that it's a game that's controversial for a reason, and not by accident! It's a weird game, and it leaves many different impressions on people. Apollo's character in DD and SOJ, in my opinion, are less stale then his AJ self. Generally, I'm not the biggest fan of Apollo. I think he has more character in both the following games. I feel like one of the few things that AJ did well was their themes. If it weren't for those themes, I don't think I could ever even semi-like Apollo. When I was first playing it, I was feeling very underwhelmed. Case one was a decent case. Case two was as uninteresting as cases in Ace Attorney go. The Lamiroir arc in case 3 was probably the most interesting part of the case. However, everything else is not appealing to me. Case 4 was interesting with the MASON system, however it comes out completely out of context and makes no sense. The trials were both very forced. They forced the whole "Kristoph did Everything." Those are my thoughts, and I will respect any rebuttal.

I had an R4 growing up and the AA games on it were the original, TnT and AJ. Naturally because I didn't quite understand parts at first, I ended up completing Apollo Justice first, followed by the original and then TnT (like 9yo me was a real dumbass). And then AAI. AJ does have a place for me in my heart. Apollo reminds me of myself, someone who looks up highly to heroes and feels betrayed when they don't turn out what they expected, or do something heinous. He reminds me of young hopes and dreams for the future. He's energetic. I agree that I think Turnabout Corner and Serenade were a little boring, perhaps forgettable. But they still have a place in the game, to help flesh out Apollo's character in "real time" as we explore and investigate. My personal little favourite thing was aiming the murder weapon (the gun) right into my face and then examining the barrel, only to laugh when Apollo and Trucy yelp about it being pointed at them. It's even funnier while in the middle of court.

With Christoph he basically tells you everything. Even with the first tutorial case with Mia this wasn't the case. She usually just gave a subtle hint but rarely pointed it out. Towards the end of 4-1 Phoenix completely takes over and Apollo basically just has to repeat what Phoenix is saying.

4:21 This is actually one of my all time favorite cases! I rank it 4th, after 3-5, 2-4, and 1-4. It's just extremely solid overall and was an absolute blast to play. Meeting Trucy and seeing her interact with Apollo was a delight. The prospect of learning more about this seemingly darker take on the world was really exciting to me. Meeting Klavier was great. Hearing Ema Skye's theme again and seeing what she was up to felt like running into an old friend again... it all just felt really good. The mystery itself felt like just the right difficulty for the first real case of the game. The Kitakis were great and had some fantastic animations. Plum pulling the sword was funny literally every time and I don't want to spoil Big Wins' big moment at the end. The case also introduced perceive, which was a much more engaging mechanic than the magatama for me. I'm not a fan of it being a magic item, but the gameplay is fun. Trucy's Mr. Hat trick is also 🐐🐐🐐🐐 and Trucy is unequivocally Best Girl. Overall, this case was so much fun that for me it's one of the absolute best Ace Attorney experiences.

I'll tell you man, I always enjoyed the game, I heard a lot of critisizim about it, normally I would understand why people dislike this game so much becasue it "betrayed" the fans for taking Phoenix and destroy his life, I actually liked him in this game, Apollo doesn't get much credit on what he does, Trucy is my second favorite assistant behind Maya,her past of her family is intreaging, the ending actually made me intreaged for what would happen, when Apollo and Trucy find out they were sibilings, there are some unanswred questions that I was waiting for. Then my biggest gripe came when I found out that there is a new game with Phoenix returning to the courtroom to please the older AA Fans in Dual Destinies, and I was genuenly dissapointed of this game, for a direct sequel to it's previous predecessor it fell flat on it's face, nothing worked well in this game whre Apollo gets shoved in the corner in favor of the Returning Phoenix and a new characte "Athena" who got shoved in my face for no good reason and got all the attention, and the only backstory I got from Apollo that he lost a friend, so he went to his emo phase to get revenge on the killer, wooooo hooooo, which is a lazy writing, it's like the B Team that got the job of writing didn't find anything for him. so they gave him that lazy storytelling at the last minute. One of my grips that I used to have on AJ:AA that there were no trilogy Characters like Maya or Edgeworth or Gumshoe, but that got deminished when Maya and Edgeworth came back in all of their shell of their former selves glory in DD and SOJ, it actually made me wish we continued Apollo's story properly without shoving the whole Kura'in Kingdom thing in SOJ just to bring Maya back.

I agree with you, except for the part where it was bad that the old characters returned. Seeing them in Court, watching them in the game, was amazing. Seeing Maya at your side again, seeing Edgeworth doing the same poses in 3D was absolutely amazing. Having Phoenix in Dual Destinies wasn't the best choice, but the game had a lot of amazing plot arcs and themes so I like it, and while Athena's position seems a little forced, her arc works so it's not that big of a deal.

I really didn't mind older characters to return, in fact I wanted old characters to return to enhance the new ones, not hijacking the game about themselves "just like the good old days", it prevents newer characters from developing and it makes me feel old.

I kind of agree with you, but at the same time, I don't. It's hard to explain, but we all like to see the old characters. I think a solution to this is to just make a side game where the old characters are and keep the main series games to the new characters. It's clear the main controversy of the new trilogy is whether or not the old characters should return. I personally don't mind it, but a solution would be a nice side game.

The reason people don't give Apollo credit or really gravitated towards him is because in his game he is constantly overshadowed by others. Be that Phoenix in the first case, Trucy in the second or Glavier in the third. In the fourth case he almost feels entirely absent. It's far more about Phoenix' past and Christoph. Apollo for many just didn't feel compelling enough to be a satisfactory replacement for Phoenix. This is even more so because Phoenix is constantly stealing the spotlight from Apollo which kind of hammers home that point. I do agree that they should have focused more on Apollo in Duel Destinies. I do like though that they actually gave Apollo something personal to deal with. He did have that in Apollo Justice with Christoph but that was never focused on. I actually do like Phoenix here and how collected and smart he is. You can tell he is decades of experience.

marinus18 I really didn't have that feeling of being overshadowed by everyone, maybe at a good portion of case 4,but I didn't feel that he was entirely forgotten. in Case 1 Apollo could have accused the worng person and get Phoenix free, but Phoenix has to object and lead Apollo to the truth, becasue Apollo was a novice back then, in Case 2, Trucy was giving him a helping hand where he can discover his Precieve ability, he was doing very well for himself in the second case, and it actually proved that Trucy is a helpful assistant unlike Maya whose only cheerleading and then channeling her sister to save Phoenix in (1-2), which is funny since they complained about Apollo. Case 3, I really didn't see Klavier overhadowing Apollo, not even the slightest. Unlike DD where he was just being Edgy in case 4 and case 5 because his friend was murdered and we only got 15 minutes of him randomly accusing Athena and then after that he gets overshadowed by everyone else, DD should have still made Apollo the main focus and make his journey of discovring what is the law and make it more personal, like what they did with Edgeworth in AAI2 , instead of Shohoring Phoenix back as the main Protagionst and then Add Athena for no good reason.

Apollo Justice as a game feels like a good introduction to the “second trilogy.” About how Apollo learns about how dark and betraying the law can be... And I feel like, though Dual Destinies introduced Athena and was titled as a Phoenix Wright game, still has some development with Apollo struggling to find the truth in his own way, even if it may have been done poorly with Clay and such... Spirit of Justice feels like a great conclusion to Apollo’s Trilogy as at the end of AJ he stated that he would find out what law was and that he would change it one day if necessary. And that’s exactly what he did at the end of SoJ, change the law in Khurain, even if it was just a foreign country. I feel like AJ, DD and SoJ are nice build-ups to Apollo’s learning of the law but with Phoenix’s disbarrment, Athena’s introduction and past, and reintroducing Maya mixed into it. It doesn’t exactly ruin the second trilogy, but it could have been better if Apollo had more focus. Still, I love all the Ace Attorney games and Apollo is my favorite character of the series from his development, though I can see why people may dislike the second trilogy and characters. It’s all about opinion, I guess.

The investigation side games were also amazing, but the problem is that they didn't sell, so we didn't get GK 2 in English. But Ace Attorney Investigations 2 is amazing! DD is definitely not the strongest and is definitely not up there with the OT and the side games, but I think it's the best in its trilogy. It succeeded in making a likable world and the whole GYAXA plot and arc is incredible and I wouldn't change it.

It’s an older video but still want to comment my experience as a newcomer to the AA series as I just recently finished Apollo Justice and currently in the middle of DD. I really enjoyed the experience I had with AJ, I love Apollo as a character and you can clearly see his differences from Phoenix as he is definitely way more nervous than Phoenix during his trials you can see it in his sprite work with him using his nervous sprite many times and of course him always leaning forward with his hands clenched as his default pose, he only ever stands up straight at the start of trials, when he’s reading off evidence or testimony’s or when he is confident. Very different than Wright who is always standing up straight and only slouches when he’s nervous but always coming off as more confident than he is. I really liked the perceive during cases making me watch the poses of people more to figure out what is their lie pose and then find their tell. I think it fits in a courtroom setting than just presenting evidence because you might not have the evidence to call them out on it. I only really had complaints that I think the last case is abit messy with you jumping around from having a day with Apollo to then the trial 7 years ago to the Mason System to the last day. I think the game really set up for Apollo to take a more major role in the future since he does take a backseat, it sets up a lot of stuff for future games like Phoenix maybe getting his badge back and when are Trucy and Apollo going to figure out their related or the fact they met their mom without realizing but because of Shu Takami’s involvement with Layton vs PW which delayed DD and completely changed the narrative with a brand new character taking the spot and being the focus of the game rather than Apollo taking center stage as he should

Casa 4-2 is great. It trolls the player and it's super entertaining. I mean, first you start off doing chore for Phoenix to a point where I was legitmately wondering if there'd be a case at all or if the game was playing a cruel joke on me Later you have the most absurd of intertewined plots that has everything: a literal university graduate which steals women panties (plus a lot of funny jokes about Trucy magical panties in the mix), a Yakuza family gently asking to get their son out of trouble (or else), a rockstar prosecutor who doesn't seem to care more about his fame and status rather than the case, a noodle seller annoyed he can't work because his car is the crime scene but he ends up being a doctor. Seriously? What it's not to like? The characters are too much fun? The plot is too over the top? The jokes are too hilarious? This episode is such a memorable rollercoaster ride! I guess it's kinda slow paced, but the payoff for your patience is just awesome. It's Ace Attorney absurdness at its finest and I love it so much. And it's not even the best episode in this game (I'd put it as 3rd best case) I literally don't know what not to like , I guess the culprit is kinda weak though, but compared to the rest I think this is just a nitpick

I completely disagree with you . Let's see the cases of PW:AA one by one The first turnabout is a tutorial it doesn't count Turnabout sisters(?) : Phoenix literaly messes up so badly he ends up being accused of the crime. And he only wins by mia ex machina Turnabout Samurai : Edgeworth practically holds Phoenix's hand in the last part after realizing vasquez was the killer. Same with what Klavier did in case 3 Turnabout Goodbyes : Phoenix does do some impressive work here I can't deny that but he still wins the first part by bluffing( I mean cross examining a parrot? really?) We could say that phoenix used tricks or mia to win a lot of cases with the stolen turnabout and recipe for turnabout as glaring examples. And yes phoenix did end up being more developed and a better character and attorney but it was over the course of an entire trilogy. Apollo only had 4 cases for him. And we never got to see the rest of his story because fans . like you, didn't like phoenix being sidelined threw an outrage then and instead of an apollo trilogy phoenix got his franchise back Overall, the problem with apollo not being able to do much is a problem with the way the games are structured. They can't give you direct hard evidence tying the killer to the crime most of the time because then you could immidiately present it and end the case. They need to have the dramatic effect and difficult to beat villains. But without that kind of decisice evidence it's difficult to catch them. So phoenix relied on tricks or outside help most of the time but apollo only based his cases around the actual evidence. And it wasn't always enough. So in the final case phoenix had to rig the system because they couldn't catch kristoph with evidence. And it would be out of character for Apollo to use a bluff So in a sense he might even be a better lawyer

Hey. You know that these games are not made for the English audience from the outset right? In Japan, the Ace Attorney games are not divided into the name of the main protagonists but rather just Gyakuten Saiban 1 to 6. This is because post Apollo Justice (Gyakuten Saiban 4), Phoenix Wright is not the one true protagonist anyway in the preceding games. The name Phoenix Wright is plastered on most of the western release because he is just going to attract more sales due to name recognition. Furthermore, the idea of Jurist System being experimented in Gyakuten Saiban 4 to indict criminals without direct evidence was a reflection of the Japanese Court System experimenting with the idea at the time, with the game trying to make a statement in regards to that topical issue in Japan.

Bruh the beggining of the franchise was a experiment, they only wanted to create an auto-conclusive history and that's all. It was a succesful experiment. The other games really had a good thing, JFA, defending a guilty person, and T&T conected all the games to finally reach the conclusion and end the mysteries of the trilogy. Apollo Justice is just bad because Capcom wanted to promote their new law system and keep juicing PW. But Shu Takumi really tried very hard. From a real point of view the law system in Ace Attorney's world is trash. Shu takumi was trying to set the game for a sequel, with the "Dark Age of Law". The concept was taken in the next game but all the previous character development Phoenix had with this game, disappeared. Apollo's history in future games was just to finally give him a history, because in this game despite being his game, he doesn't have one. Why this worked with Phoenix and not with Apollo? Because Apollo was meant to have a personality. Phoenix in the first game was the player, no backhistory, no much personality, he was there to represent the player. That changed with future games.Apollo was an entire puppet and this game really have very bad cases, the first one was very good, because PW was there, the mistery of this game was presented and you solve it until the last cases. The lack of Apollo's history makes us concentrate more on the things we knew, like, Who is the mother of Trucy? Oh why is Phoenix now an hobo? Why Ema is so grumpy compared to his previous appeareance? Oh yeah we play with pw again :D, oh theres Detective Gumshoe. And Apollo is just there.

I've just finished AJ having played the original trilogy. I'm working through on order. I think that mechanically the game improved on its predecessors, for the most part. The mini games (mostly from Ema) allowed some variety in how you investigate, and the game had fewer "how the hell was I meant to work *that* out?" moments. My main complaint was that the Gramarye ring mechanic did not sit right. Apart from the fact that no argument of "you were sweating so you nervous so you were lying" is ever going to work (the prosecution & judge is perfectly happy to demand evidence for far more reasonable assertions) but solving it just felt like searching randomly for the tell and hoping you find it. (Especially when you're not 100% sure where the lie is, exactly.) The magatama is far more satisfying and makes more sense, mechanically, as it rewards you for understanding the story so far. In terms of story I'm loathe to compare it too directly to the previous games, particularly around character development. We only had four trials compared to 14 for Phoenix so far. But I do feel that maybe it would have been better off focusing on either the Gramarye family or the Gavin family and really developing one story fully and saving the others for another game. As it was, Kristoph as a main villain didn't really have time to create an emotional response before he's in jail. Keeping him out of jail would, I think, have been stronger.

I agree with a lot here but I also disagree with quite a bit. I agree that a lot of the cases are weak, Turnabout Corner is completely forgettable honestly just a generic filler case with not much standing out, and Turnabout Serenade was infuriating, attempting to show how broken the legal system was without Apollo EVER commenting on it until the last 20 minutes or so is weak writing. If you wanna pass a message you gotta make it clear that that's the point, the absurdity of accusing a young blind (or so we thought) child is never mentioned even though it was meant for the viewer to catch on and its frustrating, not to mention the amount of times you have to watch the concert footage and how many times Daryan says "DECISIVE EVIDENCE" I did really love Turnabout Succession though, personally. I feel like it was weak how Apollo basically did nothing in it but the rest was very interesting. Phoenix plotting a 7 year long plan to bring justice to Kristoph was really fascinating and seeing how he was completely immune to the law without Phoenix bending the rules for both of his killings was interesting and did a good job of showing the message of the game, and how corrupted the legal system had become. His motive was pretty dumb though, I think they should've fleshed it out more and given him more screentime and he'd be one of the best villains in the series. Good video though, and sorry for the rant just finished the game for the first time yesterday and liked it a lot more than I expected (I tried it years ago but couldn't get through Turnabout Serenade and I still agree with myself from then that its a godawful case)

I think this game suffers from the same issue with Justice for All: Two of the cases are actually great, but the other two were just bleh: I enjoyed Turnabout Trump and Turnabout Corner a lot, Turnabout Serenade was a pain and suffered 3rd case syndrome (granted, up until Duel Destinies the only third case I enjoyed was Turnabout Samurai, even if it's too long), while Turnabout Succession was just a disappointment. Not because of Wright's disbarment, but mainly because the massive wasted potential there, especially with the jurist system being might as well be a non-entity in there. Imagine how much more interesting the case would be if Apollo has to actually interact with the jury and try and convince them. Unlike Maya in the OT and even Athena in the next game, Trucy was just never given any opportunity to react the bad things happening surrounding her and grieve. Drew Misham's paintings were also left completely unexplained by the game. Also how the heck was a disgraced attorney able to implement a brand-new system? Granted, Edgeworth could've had a role in helping, but we weren't given any evidence to support that. It doesn't help at all that so much time of case 4 is dedicated to both Phoenix and his backstory that he effectively hijacked Apollo as a protagonist, and it felt that Apollo too never got to grow as a person as well. For all their faults, I felt Apollo had more chance to grow and develop in Duel Destinies and SOJ, and had much more satisfying arcs in both games. It helps a lot that Apollo had way more chemistry with Athena Cykes than he had with Trucy Wright, who never got the chance to really shine as a character until in case 2 of SOJ, where she FINALLY was given the chance to properly react the bad shit happening to her. Honestly though, if it weren't how poorly implemented the jurist system is in the final case, I would've rated this game a bit higher. The jurist system in the final case just served as an extremely lazy deux ex machina to nail the culprit for the final case, instead of Apollo and Klavier actually trying to convince the jury of their stances.

If I were to make a list T&T would be the first one on the list, because the game ties all the loose ends of the original trilogy. Not to mention that T&T has a very good plot twist at the end. AJ would most likely be #2 simply because of the fact that the sprites aren't too choppy. AJ has new OST that was made for the DS and not for the GBA, which means that the music can sound way better.

One of the only things we knew about Apollo was that his father "died on stage", which later we find out that Apollo's father got hit with a blunt object. Nah, I agree whole heartedly with past Jack. The only thing different between us I think is that I was extremely excited to meet new characters and have Apollo take over as the new defense attorney. The mere fact that AJ is actually just a story of Phoenix when you think of the overall structure kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Both because I wanted to see more about Apollos motivations and growth, but also because Phoenix had one of the most complete and satisfying narratives in the orig trilogy. I felt like there shouldve been nothing else for the player to gain from him in a story sense. I often talk about how there are many different ways the story of AJ:AA could've been so much better, and I honestly feel that one of them would've been if Hobo Phoenix was just a brand new character, someone else who used to be famous in the Law World who fell from grace and is now using all he can to get back at the man and system responsible. Then at the last case, we find out he was working with a much more experienced lawyer to help change the court system for the better. Enter Phoenix Wright, the Turnabout Terror. I understand though what was happening behind the scenes and why Shu Takumi wrote in Phoenix that way. I just feel like his "development" in aa4 is sort of overkill. The idea of being betrayed by a client was already explored (not to this degree, but explored) in 2-4. It just felt like, ultimately, they had wrapped up a nicely well-worn present and finalized it with the bow that was T&T, only to rip it back open for AJ instead of making a new present.

Also, Im sorry but the last case IS anticlimactic. Some of it is so subtle, it's a "blink and you'll miss it" sort of thing. I had to reread things and ask others to just make sense of what happened at the end with certain plot points. To this day, I still don't know the significance of the underpaintings of Apollo's cases in the last one. 4-2 had nothing to do with 4-4, 4-3 was just such a pain to get through with a forgettable defendant (so forgettable, I guess Lamiore/Thalassa just abandoned him after gaining her memories back just so she could Not try and reconcile/care for her kids). And it's so weird how unabashedly biased the mason system was in favor of Phoenix. It didnt need to be that way, he was the victim through and through, yet he found perhaps the most biased jury he could find without it being just straight up Trucy. I did like the little twist that Emma's pin was actually a little camera, though. And thats not even mentioning that it really didnt feel satisfying getting Kristoph as Apollo, because aside from 4-1, it felt like they were strangers despite spending 7 years together. Another different choice I wouldve made wouldve been to have Apollo actually continue to visit Kristoph on prison for guidance. Not only because Phoenix is never around anyway, but also because maybe Apollo doesnt fully trust Phoenix after he gave him forged evidence. If I were Apollo, I wouldn't trust him. Afterall, who's to say my boss of 7 years isn't actually innocent? Then the moment of realizing "Ok, he really was evil the whole time, then" at the end couldve hit harder for Apollo. Because, lets face the facts, Phoenix was Literally using Apollo. So maybe if he felt that sooner, Apollo could've felt more trusting of Kristoph, making the player in turn question who exactly this man is and, maybe, he might be good? Augh, there's just so much more I could write about this game and why I'm actually so obsessed with it. I'm obsessed for all the wrong reasons, because of its missed potential and all the characters I care about/am intrigued by but feel like there's just so much lacking for them (Apollo, Klavier, Kristoph, Daryan, etc)... This game missed so much for me.

Quite right too. Incorporating Phoenix into Apollo’s story really stole the rookie’s spotlight. Thankfully, Apollo’s had a little more time to shine in subsequent entries.

AJ was a strange one for me. I admit, when I was initially playing the series I loved AA so much I even invisioned myself in it as a minor character (sorry Gumshoe, it was me who brought the evidence in 1-4!). So when I heard of AJ, a lawyer who grew up idolizing Phoenix, I basically bended the canon to make him, well, me. I think it gave me an attachment to AJ that the game didn't necessarily deserve. Even so, as this video says, the story and character didn't pan out like I wanted: AJ never really gets to do much, develop, and truly have his own moments! I was able to experience some great Apollo moments in the later two games, I think there's several instances where he comes off as smarter and more self-sufficient than even Phoenix, but at the same time I think he was robbed by having a Frankenstein's Monster of backstory additions plastered onto him. All those different events, seemingly at odds with each other, made it harder for me to personally insert or even relate to Apollo, even as he was doing in court the things I wanted him to since his inception.

that is his character. The old trilogy introduced us with prosecutors who acted like antagonists (before their development); Edgeworth tried to make every defendants guilty for the sake of victory; Franziska was the same but for the VonKarma's perfection: Godot had a grudge for Phoenix alone. AJ turned everything around and gave us a prosecutor who is completely different. Klavier is actually the good guy, he's not corrupted, he doesn't care about victory, only the truth (much like Edgeworth in AAI1+2). I can see why ppl take issue with him since he isn't "scary" and "intimidating" but honestly I just love him as character and a prosecutor

In the previous three games we're always being told that prosecutors and defense attorneys are supposed to work together to find out the truth, so I think the devs might've wanted to give us a character that kind of symbolized that - along with the fact that It might get repetitive if we had prosecutors who were all basically the same. I'm replaying Apollo justice and klavier still does oppose you alot but his motivations from edgeworth and franziska are entirely different! He wants to find the truth just like Apollo, where previous prosecutors were motivated by self-driven desires and personally get offended when they loose. Personally, I really enjoy that he's such a carefree and nice character! I think the contrast between him and his brother is really interesting! I do wish it was more explored though

It's funny that the one character I felt like really suffered in AJ was Apollo Justice himself, and he's also the only one to get proper involvement in later games which strangely enough make him the only character in the Dark Law Trilogy to get development across multiple games. Apollo by the end of Spirit of Justice is such a good character it's crazy that his own game contributed about none of that. I mean if there's 3 things I love about Duel Destinies: the villain in theory (even if the application was AWFUL), Blackquill (the one character to actually be well animated, though I still would've preferred Klavier), and the development Apollo gets.

It’s not a bad game, it just lacks consequences. Apollo and Trucy never find out that they’re siblings; Klavier disappears (only appearing once in Turnabout Academy without having changed a bit); and Apollo himself is unchanged, only taking up the Kristoph mindset in the last case of DD and NOWHERE ELSE. And Phoenix’s shady actions in the game don’t seem to matter at all, and his janky MASON system still gets him his badge back despite many unanswered questions. I love AJ as a game but I wish some of the loose ends and questions were resolved better in DD

Honestly, I think the primary issue with Apollo Justice is just that it suffers from exec meddling. If Capcom wasn't so certain it'd flop without Phoenix, then the developers could have crafted the game they wanted. I suspect the 4 case structure and bloated conclusion come predominantly from how the game had to scrap the old ideas to tie into Phoenix being there again. I honestly think the original idea of a new attorney was for the best as while it's fine giving the players nostalgia bait, it's also dragging the series down. I'd much rather they use the older characters either in the side lines or as suspects in a more futuristic part of the timeline. That way, we're not bogged down with the huge amounts of history that they have to work with and we can instead start fresh without sacrificing the old characters entirely. The half-and-half solution simply wasn't working in this game nor did it get better in DD where the plots felt even more constricted and inconsistent because of the mixing of old and new.

I feel like AJ is the Metal Gear Solid 2 of the franchise (minus the Kojima-is-a-genius aspect and the decision to make the next game a prequel, which was a brilliant move IMO). Solid Snake went through a similar process as Phoenix, being a jaded soldier in MGS1, an enigmatic mentor in MGS2, and then back to jaded protagonist in MGS4 - which some people felt was unnecessary since the mentor role was a logical place for him to settle in. Playing as Apollo felt like playing as Raiden where he feels like a pawn in someone else's game, nothing is under his control, everything is a lie. And of course the whole cyberspace thing, where everything is made up and timelines don't matter. That was very familiar :)

I love the idea of hobo phoenix (tho I'm pretty sure technically he wasn't a hobo because he still owned his agency building from what I understand (despite it going to hell with how cluttered it is)), I still think the orginal trilogy ended on a exceptional note and all that, but from a realistic standpoint by the end of the orginal trilogy, phoenix was in a court that highly favored the prosecution and probably secretly wish the defense get murdered or not show up for work so they can give guilty verdicts left and right, so I'm honestly surprised they didn't try to disbar him when he tried to cross examine a parrot personally xD(would love to see a layton vs hobo phoenix game, tho it'd never happen). Life is full of ups and downs, so phoenix after the third game will naturally have another "down" in his life which happened to be a era of him being disbarred, but I really appreciate this characterization of him after seeing him be so easily abused in the orginal trilogy, I'd love to see hobo phoenix right after he gets his badge but before he gets his suit take on edgeworth in a case, personality wise, it'd be Intriguing to see them at it at that point in their lives

SPOLIER ALERT: don't scroll if ya don't wanna spoil Apollo's final case. The best part of the game is where you play as phoenix wright and go through the mason system and break characters' psyche locks. And the biggest twist is the new black psyche lock Kristoph has. If you don't know black psyche locks appear when someone subconsciously hides secrets that even the person who has the locks doesn't know about.

something I like about this game is apollo's animations, In the newer games, with the 3d model, his animations look a bit lifeless, especially the thinking animation, in the original it actually looks like hes thinking, and in the 3ds games it kinda looks like he just stares at the table while putting his finger on his forehead

I just finished this game a week ago. I started from AA1 and am climbing up, haven't played DD or SOJ. The first case just BLEW ME AWAY. Hands down the most enjoyable 1st case of the games this far. The plot, the soundtrack, the cutscenes... Everything was spot-on. Having Krisoph established as a bad guy from the beginning of the game was interesting. The feeling I got from the beginning was that the whole purpose of the game was putting Phoenix's life back on track, idk why. I just immediately felt that way. So to me Apollo never felt like a character who was supposed to replace Phoenix, but I see many people DID see him as such, which is interesting. Maybe it's because Apollo never resonated with me as strongly? Idk, Phoenix I was immediately able to connect with since day 1 and feel something about, which never became the case with Apollo. Maybe it was the fact that I had made up this image in my head that Apollo was just a means-to-an-end character to develop Phoenix more? I really don't know. Or maybe I'm just too much of a fangirl to look at anyone besides Phoenix! Apollo is fun and all, but I like Phoenix way more. As for the other characters... Klavier I did NOT like. He just got on my nerves. He was way too cocky and self-assured the whole way through and he didn't seem to doubt himself or go through any kind of growth in the game. Trucy I loved! She had a ton of personality and she's all around very charming and funny. I love her dynamic with Phoenix. She barely passes Maya when it comes to favourite assistants in my books. Very hesitant to play DD or SOJ since I haven't heard much good about the quality of those games. The trilogy has set my bar for the series way too high haha.

Apollo justice did subvert what ace attorney was up to this point. For good or for ill the case has more inner workings than inside a clockwork clock, much like I played ghost trick, I felt that I had more understanding, the first 2 cases of ace attorney made me respect law courts and how to have drama inside of them. Apollo justice may have been played by me twice but I enjoyed the 1st, 3rd and 4th. Especially the misham case, Phoenix Wright may have been betrayed by gramarye but he did introduce a very important element that ace attorney investigations delved into, Borgania and untill ace attorney vs professor Layton I haven't played dual destinies or spirit of justice either.

!! SPOILERs ABOUT AJ HERE !! At first i didn't like it cause of what they did to Phoenix and instead introduced Apollo, but i started to like this game and Apollo, because i can relate to him. Since he's a rookie for now, i might understand why everyone tries to help him in the game to get the conclusion, though they definitely overdid it. I liked Tiala Alita since i like the whole betrayal and he though he killed her thing, plus i like her design. Case 1 was good ngl. Case 3 was well, i like this case because of Lamiroir and her music, but overall yeah, the logic in this one is flawed, especially Lamiroir's "I wasn't on stage at all." Yet, it's not possible since Valant can't just be in 2 places at once, and listening to her song over and over and over is tiring even if i like it. Case 4 was really good, it was a really good finale, though i agree with you that choosing Lamiroir as a juryst is kinda wrong since she isn't connected to the case, but connected to one of the sides. But overall i really liked this game, ost is amazing because i like gloomy and dark ost's, Klavier is my favourite prosector now and the characters are really nice.

I was excited to play Apollo Justice because of Apollo and Trucy. Just from looking at art I initially thought they were siblings that solved cases together and Phoenix came into the mix to help them. The way the game introduced them together was fine to me. I did enjoy the first case the most it felt like a real forensics/criminal case with trilling twists. Our Phoenix Wright forging evidence?!? The second case wasn’t boring per say, but the navigation got me stuck many times that I had to put the game on pause because I didn’t know how to progress. I absolutely dislike the 3rd case and I felt no shame in looking up a wiki to speed up my process and end the case. I just finished the final case and it felt stale. It felt like none of the other games and I don’t feel like I learn anything?? I DONT KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE IT, but I think the way the game tried to unravel history so that the current case makes sense was so anticlimactic and felt jumbled. It wasn’t in the the same way as trials and tribulations because while that game used plot from justice for all to build up the story, trials and tribulations knew how to spread out its information so that it makes sense and felt impactful. The character interactions do make up for the most part. When I investigate Trucy and Apollo talk like siblings. I liked how Phoenix was laidback but I wondered where Maya and Edgeworth and Pearl were the whole time since they were never mentioned. Only side characters like Ema and Meekins appeared. I don’t have an opinion on Ema cause it just felt like she didn’t want to be there 🥲 Klavier was a nice twist from the moody and spiteful prosecutors in the previous games. I like how he cheers up whenever Apollo is around and causally flirts with him. He’s just like Apollo he just wants to figure out the truth. Overall I can’t even think of a word to describe this game. It was different...

Now that I see this I see why I thought it kinda odd why phoenix was in at all, but it was my first ace attorney game. However, the way they put phoenix in, is like in a way of saying how phoenix climbed so high in the beginning series, but fell so far here, probably becoming a high likely target for scandals and trouble such is in real life, this KZfaqr got a high amount of subscribers (to compare with Phoenix's fame and high development in his life or story) and became a target for scandal and getting fired. (Said KZfaqr was swatted because of his subscriber count was high, making him a target, and wanted to actually quite KZfaq.)

Honestly, for me this is the second best game in the series after Trials and Tribulations (JFA and the First game being right after). I know that the second case is kinda meh, and I'm not gonna lie and pretend like I enjoyed Phoenix's role in the story either. There were a LOT of things I disliked about it but to be completely honest....I really enjoyed how it tried to stand out on it's own. Amazing soundtrack aside, Apollo is a very strong character and alongside Trucy they really make the game feel more vibrant and alive, it makes you invested in the story. By the time Klavier was introduced, there was no way I was taking any sort of breaks because it did such a good job at making me want to know what would happen next. The reveal about everyone's ties to one another and how they all came together for the common goal of 'finding the truth', I feel was actually handled better than in ANY of the original or games that came after it. Apollo Justice was committed to showing that not everyone is 'evil' and there are rarely any sort of 'perfect victims' as Phoenix usually managed to have as clients, and I honestly respect that in a franchise about how the law is unequivocally corrupt, how people can get away with crimes by pinning it on someone else, and how utter police incompetence is the norm there are still people that are out there on both the defense and prosecution side fighting to make changes and give people a fair ruling for their actions. The entire storyline between Klavier and Kristoph, as well as their relationship to Phoenix and his disbarrment, and Trucy and Apollo's sibling relationship were all solid plotlines that I had hoped would get more light and screen time as they were all genuinely compelling and a fresh take on the world that was already established. And, yeah, the perceive could be kinda annoying but at the same time people forget two big things: 1 that the magatame was never perfect either and that it took a lot of time for it be to used over and over again until it was a fun and polished mechanic and 2 that this was the first game in Apollo's story to start off with. He had just gotten the power, hardly understood how to use it (and this reflected in how arbitrary it was at times) but he still tackled the challenge and abilities with gusto and did his absolute best to understand and uncover the motives of the witness up on the stand. Honestly, I was so hoping that Dual Destinies would be about the Grammyre and Gavin family situations, how both families have to deal with intense expectations and being in the limelight, and how these people from such different and disparate backgrounds come together to achieve this grand goal, but it completely shafted previous characters and relationships to introduce new ones. This isn't to say I hate Athena and her crew, but I wish that she had come at least one game later. I mean, in the first Phoenix Wright game, we knew nothing about Phoenix save for his attitude about his clients and desire to want to protect people. It wasn't until the second and third game that his other relationships besides the ones in the first game were introduced and he was able to be a character with any real backstory or development outside of what we already knew. Apollo was in that exact same boat except, in Dual Destinies and beyond, they never answered any of the questions and development that was given to him or anyone that was introduced in his game. I mean, if we were to take out Maya, Edgeworth, Larry, and Gumshoe, who would Phoenix even be? Not a character that we would really be invested or particularly care too much about. It was his actions, his relationships, and actions towards the people around him that made him such a strong and fun character. People seem to forget this when talking about Apollo, because all the characters that mean anything to him in Dual Destinies are pretty much axed, his character that was previously established (emotional, loud, earnest) were demolished, and every narrative thread he had was dropped for...what? A dead defendant. I know that was kinda looking in the future, but the reason I bring up the games after Apollo Justice is the same reason I stated that Trials and Tribulations was my favorite: the buildup and payoff. And Apollo Justice, the game, even with all of it's flaws was an intriguing game that kept me captivated and interested almost the entire time and made me interested in what was to come next. And for that, even with all of it's flaws, is why I consider Apollo Justice to be my second favorite game in the entire series.

Apollo justice is a game I feel extremely ambivalent on. The game does a lot of things right, the visuals are fantastic, the soundtrack is a bop, the overarching story is a really cool idea and I really like the first case. The thing that bothers me is that I can’t get down with the most important part of this game, the cases. While I love the first case the other cases fall flat on their faces. The second case is just kind of dull and wocky is one of the most irritating defendant. Also the premise reminds me a lot of case 2-2, a nurse who was screwed over by her scumbag doctor boss gets pissed and for revenge she kills him by shooting him from an unusual angle(either through the screen thing or the carriage thing), allowing for them to pin the blame on someone else. Case 3 is the definition of a slog. The killer is obvious, the premise is frankly stupid, you have to watch that one video over again and the case drags out way longer than it should be. Case 4 is an utter mess. With kristoph on the box art(showing his story wasn’t done after case 1) and his silhouette being in the case intro, it practically screams that he’s going to be in someway involved In the crime. The final trying is boring and barely interactive and the ending feels so unsatisfactory because kristoph was already in jail before the case even started meaning that practically nothing happens to him. I do like some of its themes and I like how all of your clients are in some way criminals,Phoenix forges evidence in the first case, wocky exists(that’s a huge crime in his case), that kid in case 3(I forgot his name) smuggled those cocoons and Vera misham literally forges evidence. Almost all the fundamentals of a perfect ace attorney game are there, it’s just that the game falls apart when it comes to the most important of them all, the cases themselves. Also it doesn’t help that Apollo is so bland, that he might as well not be the main character of the story, Phoenix is the main character of the main story, Apollo is basically just an errand boy. TLDR: Apollo justice is a game that I feel mixed on because while it does do a lot Wright(yes that was intentional) it fails at the most important part of the game, the cases

The biggest missed oportunity in Apollo Justice Ace Attorney are The Rivales Family. In the game we got, The Rivales Family shoot Woki Kitaki in the heart and that's where their involvement in the game ends. I feel like if the execs didn't meddle in regards to cramping Phoenix into the game - thus forcing Shu Takumi to maturely alter the story - than I think that The Family could have been the perfect antagonists for Apollo to go up against. Case 2 & 3 would also no longer be filler as case 2's could be a Rivales Spy who send in to mary Woki so so she can asimilate The Kitaki Family into The Rivales Family and case 3's killer can be in charce of The Family's smugling network. I have no clue what role Trucy and Kristoph's roles would have been, but I think having Apollo face of against a criminal gang is WAY better a passing of the torch story we actually got.

The first Ace Attorney case I've ever watched in full is Turnabout Trump and my favorite character is still Apollo, so I'll admittedly always be a little biased. Apollo just really hits me with a lot of my personal preferences for fictional characters. I also sort of relate to him a little, we're both old souls who don't know much about popular media outside our personal realm of interests. Also, how can I not feel at least a little bad for the guy? The game is basically just him trying to have a normal law career until The Plot came banging on his door like "Guess what, kid! You're the new protagonist! Now you have to solve the standard bullshit AA cases, which are also always murders! Also, now you have an extremely convoluted backstory! Have fun! :D"

While I appreciate how this game is enjoyable on its own, I rebuke this game in the harshest possible way for committing one of the cardinal sins of storytelling for me: being a sequel that doesn't respect its predecessors. Phoenix had a fully realised character arc in the trilogy and 3-5 was a perfect ending. It rounded up all remaining plotthreads about Phoenix and the ones he cared about. Above all, it was optimistic and hopeful. We had seen Phoenix grow for 3 games and it was time to part ways. We did not need to see his future cases, the only thing we would expect from the ending was that he would continue on being a great lawyer true to his ideals, and having a good life. GS4 ruins Phoenix's future for no good narrative reason. It retroactively sours 3-5's ending. There is no reason for Apollo's new mentor to be Phoenix, his role could have been filled just fine by any other new character. If any sequel makes me want to induce a canon break in my head because it so disrespects the ending of a previous entry, there's definitely something wrong.

One thing you could check out is Turnabout Storm. It's a MLP/AA film. It's quite well made and I really like the way they did Phoenix. He is an active defense attorney and very experienced yet he still makes mistakes due to him being completely unfamiliar with the world he's in. The voice acting is quite good and though they do use a lot of elements from the games they are very well integrated. It was my first exposure to AA and I couldn't tell those elements were taken. I also quite like the prosecutor they had in Trixie Lulamoon. She is also a toxic prosecutor but unlike most she is not meant to be impressive or intimidating, even though she tries to be. However she is very immature and hides behind a facade. Yet despite that her facade is genuine, she is not lying and truly believes it to be real. She is not made out to be overly brilliant but she is nonetheless very intelligent and most of all genuinely believes that the defendant is guilty. Phoenix underestimates her several times and she is constantly made fun of but also strikes back. I do wish they would introduce a similar prosecutor, someone who is easy to dismiss and not think much of but will get you whenever you let your guard down or underestimate her.

Not only the last choice in the last cause of apollo justice is bad. The MASON system is: A) A time machine. B) A simulation of shorts with Phoenix Forged Evidence TM. It would be more credible if instead of introducing evidence from the future into the past it was just a series of recordings of Phoenix interviewing people during those all those years and in these secuences you sometimes reach a dead end an can not proceed because you did not have the evidence (because it comes from the future), then you come back to the present at the court and the jury have to decide based on some recordings that do not confirm that kristoph is the culprit. Not only evidence appear from thin air, everything is pointing at kristoph so choosing the gilty options is incredibly stupid.

I especially love the char. development of Apollo who wasn't immediately some kind of prodigy, but simply an attorney that could use a helping hand to reach greatness. If one would consider this game to be a finale to this series it would be a pretty good one especially with it's message : justice prevails in the end.

I don't think the agency complaint is fair. If we compare Apollo's development to Phoenix's total development across the three games then it can have some validity. But, that's apples and oranges. Apollo was robbed of a trilogy of his own. We can compare only one game to a full trilogy Seeing the first game though is different. If you claim that Apollo had to be "bailed out" byt Trucy and Klavier in the second case then the same applies to Phoenix. Because Edgeworth objected to the verdict with Vasquez and got more testimony like Klavier did here. And if we claim Trucy took Apollo's agency because she showed him his perception ability, giving him the key to win then should we also claim that Maya bailed Phoenix out in case 4 because she gave him the bullet he needed to defeat Von Karma? In that narrow mindset you present what did Phoenix truly accomplish in his first game?

I seen some playthroughs. It does seem like a passing of the torch of sorts. Zak was right to dismiss Kristoph as the latter wanted to win by cheating the system, but Zak wanted a fair trial, someone who wanted to get both him and Valant off the hook as it is later revealed the victim shot himself. As for Apollo, it is funny how he plays straightman to Trucy. If there were an anime there'd be a running gag where Apollo gets a ticket for disturbing the peace. And one of the bigger gags is where Apollo becomes so intimidated by Big Wins Kitaki his character model turns white, be paralyzed with fear and he'd have that :0 look to him and Trucy takes one of her magic hoola hoops and uses it to carry Apollo off.

I mean throughout the game it’s made pretty clear Apollo is a novice too in over his head who was used by everyone around him. Even by the end he admits he doesn’t understand law well enough to really get what was going on behind the scenes and really understand all the legal system drama. He was just caught up in all of it due to circumstance and coincidence, meaning even though he wanted to do more, it was difficult for him to really further himself due to everything that was going on. I think it’s a really interesting idea for a story, so I don’t see the lack of agency as a flaw at all. Apollo’s and Tracy’s abilities actually had an explanation, as opposed to Maya and Pearl who just had them and we accepted it.
@JacksMelancholy

It certainly seems that Apollo is more caught up in the events of the his game as opposed to being a key player, but I agree with you. The powerlessness of Apollo being a novice was an interesting perspective for us to experience as players.

I think _all_ AA games are great, including AJ, but it's definitely my least favorite of them all. I can't really pinpoint any reason why (at least not beyond what was said in the video), but it just ended up being really unmemorable for me. I mean, I only played the game like 3 months ago and I've already forgotten a lot from the 1st case, a decent amount of the 2nd case, little to nothing from the 3rd, and I've forgotten the 4th so much to the point where I didn't even remember what Kristoph's breakdown was like. This is unlike other AA games, where I can still remember most of what happened in all cases (even though I played some of them way longer ago than AJ). Also, great video! I'm still astounded by your small sub count *contradicting* your production value (heh heh). Your videos are very high-quality, and because of that, I was excited when I saw this in my sub box. So thanks for making this :D

My main problem is actually Klavier and that he doesn't try to oppose you. The big reason I really feel intimidated and engaged by Turnabout Goodbye is because of Manfred von Karma. My favorite part of Ace Attorney was always to fight against the prosecutor, isn't that the main idea behind the game?

I feel like the first trilogy tries to reinforce the idea that the prosecutors aren’t your enemies, the murderers are. It’s the reason why the emphasize trying to work together with edgeworth, franziska, and even Godot to find the truth, and the second game finale reinforces the idea it’s not about beating the prosecutor, it’s about catching the real murderer. Klavier helping you makes sense, especially since we later find out he feels guilty about the case seven years ago, and now values the truth above all, it’s the difference between young Klavier and Klavier.

I think I only have two problems with this game. 1. Apollo was kinda bland in this one. We learn a little more about his past and how determined he is in Dual Destinies, but this was his debut game. We got to learn about Phoenix's history in his debut so I was hoping we'd get some from Apollo as well. 2. The villains and the victims were boring and most were unsympathetic. Kristoph was a really great villain, but Alita and Daryan were extremely dislikable and I wanted to kill them both! As for Zak, Drew, and Pal, I didn't feel bad for them once they were dead. Zak and Pal were both assholes and Drew was a loser who used forgery to make a living. Romein LeTousse was the only victim I actually felt sorry for. (Only more reason to hate Daryan more!)

Before watching the movie I will say that it's a good game. It only suffers because the first three games were great. What is great is that it kinda work as a prologue to the Phoenix trilogy, the game isn't really about Apollo but instead it's a continuation on Phoenix's story where he revive the broken court system and open up a new future for a new generation. And the second case isn't necessarily bad, it's just the most bland case of all.

Cases In Apollo Justice 1. Best case in the franchise 2. People say it’s bad but they clearly have a disorder where they can only have bad opinions 3. This case doesn’t exist because bad ace attorney cases don’t exist in my eyes 4. Best ace attorney finale (yes better then Justice for all and trials and tribulations) and those who say it’s underwhelming clearly don’t understand why it feels that way. Overall, best game in the franchise, even though it only has three cases.

I remember when I finished the first case of apollo justice, aghast, and began looking at the net for what they thought of it and majority of the people are like Apollo is a better protangonist, more fleshed out etc, Apollo Justice is the best game out of all the Phoenix Wright series. And my reactions is WHAT. did you guys forget all about Phoenix, this amazing man we all journeyed with and waited for years for next story on? Later on I realized that it is because maybe for some of the fans at that time, they started with Apollo Justice and worked their way to Phoenix Wright. Or maybe they just prefer apollo, they have a right to that. I did finish the game eventually. I disliked how different the cases felt the same way you said that it feels that the protangonist is guided by other characters. I made my peace with Apollo though and despite the betrayal I felt that time, I still have to admit the story is still brillant seeing as it is made by the same creator Shu Takumi

I don't know what you're talking about. They explained Trucy and Apollo's powers in the final case during the MASON system segment. It's a combination of Gramarye DNA and magic bracelets.
@JacksMelancholy
@JacksMelancholy 5 жыл бұрын
CHBUKI ~ It's not so much that it can't be explained (not that "magic" is ever a good explanation), but more that it seems rather contrived. Maya and Mia being spirit mediums was very relevant to the plot of the original trilogy and established as part of that world. Magic bracelet powers are a little out of left field.
@chbuki
@chbuki 5 жыл бұрын
@@JacksMelancholy I mean, sure, to the extent that it was established throughout the trilogy...? It happened over three games and developed. It's not like Maya and Mia being spirit mediums was something we all innately understood from the beginning. It had to be explained in. How are Trucy and Apollo's powers any different? The explanation for how spirit magic works can't be any less contrived than an explanation for genetically inherited good eyesight and ability to notice and focus on twitches... That's the nature of an explanation of a supernatural abilities, seeing as they're not realistic abilities. The eyesight/focus thing is more based in reality than contacting spirits is, that's for sure. They definitely need more exposition, but it's not like they're so insane that it's nonsensical. I think your suspense of disbelief is working harder for the Feys' powers than you need them to work for the Gramaryes'. We still don't know why Phoenix can use the magatama despite not having Fey blood or spiritual power, but that's fine. The power magically transfers from the magatama to Phoenix. It's all contrived, but we've had longer to accept the Fey powers.
@JacksMelancholy
@JacksMelancholy 5 жыл бұрын
CHBUKI ~ That's where I have to disagree. Spirit mediums and channeling the dead are things we can indeed find in reality. In fact there are whole groups and organizations built around the art of spirit channeling in real life. Magic habit spotting bracelets though... Not sure I've seen that one around. The entire first game's overarching narrative was built around the idea that Maya's mother was a fraudulent spirit medium. That has plenty of basis in reality.
@chbuki
@chbuki 5 жыл бұрын
@@JacksMelancholy I'm gonna wait on that scientific evidence showing the existence of spirits. If you're referring to the fact that people claim to be able to commune with spirits, yes there are plenty of people who claim to be able to do that... Claims. I'm willing to call that all... for lack of a better word, bullshit. As they mentioned in game, it's not actual magic. It's above average vision and focus. Also something not necessarily realistic, but if you're given the choice between "I have reaaaaally good eyes and notice when people twitch." and "I can talk to dead people AND get possessed by their spirits, which changes my physical appearance too!" I think it's clear which is the more realistic concept. The bracelets only shrink to the size of the wearer's wrist. Which can easily be achieved with a tightly fit bracelet. It's the supposed tensing up of the muscles that makes the Gramarye know they need to focus and use their super eyesight. I guess my question is more where should Apollo Justice have explained the powers? Should it have been brought up from the beginning? I mean, they slowly introduced more and more information concerning Apollo and Trucy over the course of the game. Case 1, Trucy and Shadi Smith (ie. Zak Gramarye) introduced, Case 2, Trucy's "magic" is expanded upon, Case 3, Valant and Lamiroir (ie. Thalassa) are introduced, all with a background in magic. I mean, it was all laid out over the course of the game. In Case 4, as in most of the games, everything came together and was written up as everything being related to everything.
@chbuki
@chbuki 5 жыл бұрын
I mean, really, it's not even magic, except for Trucy's panties, which, I have to agree with Wesley Stickler, seem to be defying the laws of physics. Gramarye magic is all performance and sleight of hand/bullet (rip).

I personaly liked apollo justice I think it has the best music (there wasn't a track that I disliked). The game looks far better than any other game in the series (I didn't not like any character design even if I can agree the third cases back stage room looked a bit boring). I did dislike some characters but thougth most of them was great ( I disliked Alita Tiala becouse she had no character and was forgetable and boring) much wider cast of intresting characters, all other games could make me name multiple bad ones. I think Trucy is my favoritt character thru the whole sieries. I do like maya and I know she had a great "character ark" but, I still think Trucy was much more funny and made a better impression on me (It's only personal opinion so I hope people do respet it). I said I could name multiple bad characters: Phoenix Wright: ace attorney - The rich guy from chapter 2 (was ok but not that good) and The nerd from chapter 2 (Looks gross, I think the reasons I dislike him was meant to be disliked) Justice for all - The killer from chapter one (Booooooring) Max from the third chapter (I actually liked the rest of this chapters cast). Trials and Tribulations - Ms and Mr DeLite (Wooow I hate chapter 2 from this game, I did not want to defend a thief, I thought they where boring and had no character Ms DeLite had a little nut she was a muuuch lesser version of Dalia and every eccentic girl characters) (Havent played investigations 1 and 2) Dual Destinies: Jinxie (Boring whit bad music) Juniper (cough cough I am scared and when I am scared I cough pliz feel bad for me).
