Be careful when listening to Calvinists, they teach one has to be regenerated before they can even hear the gospel and believe it, the epistles teach the opposite. See Ephesians 1:13. Further even if you want to take it as his birth, it means that whatever the Logos was before Jesus' actual birth wasn't Jesus per se. So you still have a problem. See I can reconcile it being a Unitarian, I don't believe you can being a Trinitarian without making non-sensical doctrines of man. And I don't say this to be insulting (I used to believe in the Trinity). But it's simply doesn't hold up even from a scriptural basis.

It could be translated a number of other ways that aren't contradictory. But let's look at how the Trinitarians view it to start: In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word (Jesus) was with God (The Father), and the Word (Jesus) was God (The Father?). First off, there is no definitive article on the last theos. Meaning something closer to the NW translation is probably one of the most accurate translations. Although something like, "the word was divine" would be more appropriate as it denotes a category. Secondly, there is no punctuation in Koine Greek. So any capitalization is translators choice and often bias. They capitalize Word to make it see like a person. They often do the same with "The Holy Spirit". See my notes on that in other comments. Further, Logos can also mean PLAN (or any other number of non-personage things). So if God's plan was with him in the beginning then became manifest through Jesus, that gives an entirely different connotation as well. Neither of which denote Jesus needing to actually be THE GOD (ho theos).
