To this day I still like a good small shot glass of homemade Moonshine if I am sick with flu or in pain. I do it the correct way. My old lady control that quart.

Man!!! All of that old equipment sure brought back childhood memories. My grandpa used mules in the mines and my daddy operated the electric motor driven cars with the boom that went up and made contact on the lines. Those ole carbide lanterns on their helmets and the round lunch buckets were very familiar. I wish i had my dads old stuff that he worked with in the mines., Thanks for the memories Donnie!!

Trolley wire its called, ours was I am not sure the output amperage wise it was many years ago, but it was DC. I raised up 1 rainning night working on a blame mantrip & caught me right on the back of my neck. Coal running about 48". Talk about getting lighten up thank God I had good boots on that night. I had to been like 18 or 19 years old. Fired that old Trolley line grease to back my neck. I sure learn a quick lesson on that 1. I got in 4160 AC 1 night thumping a miner cable 1 night trying find a bad splice. I wasn't completely on planet earth for a few days on that 1. That was before I got transferred up to surface mine.

Sad shine story is about Popcorn Sutton. My late husband used to bring him home from the hospital after he was diagnosed with cancer. The Feds only went after him on principle. They knew he didn't have long to live. They could have left him be. BUT he went out his way whether I agree with it or not. He did make the best moonshine in 3 states.

My kinfolks came from Knox County KY and a dry county in Ky . My dad brought shine outta there to greater Cincinnati . Since my dad was the local egg man in Newport KY He sold shine to his egg buyers. This was before I 75 was built. Sorry for moving on however , Thank God for Black Lung money for our miners and their spouses .

The Coal Miners were never given the credit they deserve. They were hero's for their families and risked their lives on a daily bases. Hard working family men put their lives on the line every day to squeak out a poor man's living. Many men today could never compete. They deserved a drink to ease their pain and help them find some comfort as they continued to struggle from day to day to do the best they could for their families. I salute their hard work and commitment. Thank you Donnie for sharing this story. Sincerely, Louise

Many of my grandfathers and great grandfathers. Were coal miners and moonshiners. I was born in 1946.At that time, I had 6 grandfathers including great grandfathers living. They lived long enough for me to know a few of them. I haven't really talked much to my children about all of it. Think I need to do that and introduce them to you, sir. Several of my folks got Black Lung money! I love the TV program Moonshiners. You have brought back some very HARD TIMES IN MY YOUNGER LIFE. From what I've seen on KZfaq, coal is still a necessity in USA! Some people try to stop miners today.

My wife’s family came to Ohio out of the mountains of central Pennsylvania Her grandfather was a young man with a young wife and family when a mule powered coal cart broke his leg After he healed up he couldn’t work coal so he brought his family to Cuyahoga Falls Ohio where he worked cleaning a machine shop and oiling the lineshafts that drove the machines by climbing a tall ladder and putting oil in the cup at the top Guess they figured if a hillbilly with a bum leg couldn’t climb down a mountain he sure could climb a thirty foot wooden ladder! Thanks for keeping our stories alive Donnie

Good morning Donnie. My dad started in the mines at 12 as a pony boy. By 17 he’d had enough and joined the army during the Korean Conflict. When he got out he went back home long enough to get married and worked running shine for 3 years till he could buy a car and head north.

We lived outside Cincinnati when we moved out of the mining country. We came to this area from Clay county and Knox county Kentucky. Lots of shine was made there and my dad sold it along with delivering eggs on the stteets of Newport KY. Newport had a number of gangsters back then. Some of the old folks live ng there said it was the times of milk and honey. There was money to be made!

Sure good to watch some more and hear you tell the tales Mr. Donnie. Got on some other items and just hadnt watched alot until recently. Thanks for these again! Aunt and Uncle were back here in western Ks. last 2 weeks from Washington County Tenn. , just heading home today. My Dads wife now has family in West By God Virginia thats got tons of history. I realy enjoy the areas out around there and surrounding places as I drove truck through , and just visiting. Puts perspective to some of your stories.

That's some real truth there. My grandfather always used the word 'hardscrabble' for people who were trying to get enough to eat from poor land but the miners were always in danger. I always think of the old songs when you tell us a story and this one is definitely 'Dark as a Dungeon.'
