Apple AirTags can be Bluetooth Tracked! But there's a catch...

So the Apple AirTag has a privacy feature of changing bluetooth identifiers periodically during the day. However we've discovered a way to keep a static ID so it can be tracked by Bluetooth sensing devices and computers, such as a Raspberry Pi while rendering your AirTag useless for other activities...
We compare to a Tile Mate and look at you can combine the two to make something magical!

So in short, it uses a BLE private static address, which requires paring to get the static address. If I just want to do presence detection with an RPi I should go for the Tile right? Since I can't easily pair the AirTag to the Pi.

Researched this topic: Tile won't work either (except in unpaired mode, but then it's a generic beacon). If you want something trackable go for iBeacon or eddystone-UID. If you want something with privacy focus that can be detected with RPi, use beacon that supports eddystone-EID.

I was using the tile's no problem, they were not changing IDs over time as far as I could tell. Cheers

@@viennacityskateralex6979 Yeah I had one connected to my phone no problem, being used like normal, and it never changed ID numbers. Unless they've updated them in the last year :)

Thanks! This was useful information. However, if you just want a simple bluetooth device to track, that doesn't change it's mac-address, you can buy A LOT cheaper tags than a Tile. Cheap Chinese tags are like 2 USD.

Yeah agreed, I was hoping it would be helpful for those who wanted an airtag anyway for other things! But alas not...

As an unpaired dumb tracker, maybe! But you won't be able to pair them with an Android phone I suspect.

How can one PREVENT being tracked? Let's say someone sneaks one onto my car and wants to track my location. Can I use a Bluetooth scanner on my Android phone to detect that a strong signal is close to me ?

You could! Or use an air tag and not anything else, then you know it's changing ID number regularly
