Stages Of Apple Product Flaws * Ignore the problem * Blame the users * Ignore the problem * Hope the fans blame the users * Deny the problem as being anything other than a tiny minority of users who are not using the product as intended * Acknowledge the problem but still attempt to blame the users * Face a class action law suit * Acknowledge the problem and partly blame the users * Provide a time limited repair/replacement service to minimise their liability * Ignore a subsequent leaked document that proves they knew about it all along, possibly even before the product launch, but took the risk anyway

Yep. The intended use is to demonstrate that you can afford to buy it so that poor people would see from afar that you are better person. Apple products are not designed for working class. And thats why you replace them - because repairing is something that those do who cant afford to buy a new one. And allowing people to repair their macs would thus ruin Apple's reputation.

If you ask Apple do your computers get dust bunnies. They will say no. But what I see on my Mac devices is a collection of very fine dust, almost akin to talc powder. Not a little bit of dust but a lot over time. At the moment I have a Mac Studio. This computer sucks air from underneath and exits air at the rear. I could see the Mac Studios in the Apple stores had a collection of dust and dust bunnies accumulating under the Mac Studios on display. I made a simple removable cleanable dust filter that fits under my Mac Studio. The rage I was getting from Apple fanboys was savage. They claimed I will blow up my Mac by adding a filter. My constant response is always i'm saving my Mac Studio from becoming a dust clogged device as saw on my previous iMac. But why does Apple allow their devices to be dust collectors that are often near impossible to open up and clean.

I luckily do not use a Mac laptop, but was gifted another overpriced computer (M$ Surface Book 2) in 2018. When that goes under, I will get a Framework Laptop. The charger on the M$ Surface Book broke after a year and is proprietary. Now I have a cheap Chinese knockoff charger that has lasted me for four years. The Framework charges using USB-C (yes, my Surface Book also does charge via USB-C as a backup, but back in 2019-2020, USB-C chargers > 50 watts were not a thing yet).

Why? Apple has been over-valued at 1tr dollars. Apple got that way with exploiting slave labor, cheap government handouts across the globe, and intentionally designing their culture/devices to reach that end. Why replace a battery? Just buy a new phone peasant. Your computer is running slow, no you cannot update the HDD/SSD or memory, buy a new computer. Waste. Give us your money. That's it.

the thing that drives me craziest about discussing issues like this is that there is this sense of stockholm syndrome in the case of apple defenders. Consumerism. This happened with new coke in the 80s. This happens in every industry. Just a byproduct of industrialization. You know the sell me a pen thing? Well researched ads will not just (or not even bother) talking about the quality of the product. It's about selling aidea with a product. It's about making people feel good by getting the product and that they are valid / special for choosing this brand
@dirg3music
@dirg3music 6 ай бұрын
@LoveLaughlardlivelaund you nailed it, and Apple have always been masters of this manipulative style of marketing. It's not about the product and its objective wins and faults, it's entirely about how it makes you *feel*, to be the owner of a "premium" product, to part of an exclusive club, and that everyone who criticizes said club is just jealous that they aren't on the winning team. And their history of this strategy goes deep, the infamous superbowl ad, "I'm Mac, I'm PC", all the way down to the green bubble and the way it knowingly pressures teenagers into getting an iPhone to fit in with their friends.
@Dragoonsoul7878
@Dragoonsoul7878 6 ай бұрын
This is how manipulation works, why companies want human rights and manage those twitter or facebook accounts to make memes. So you see them as your friend and are less likely to believe they are manipulating you. Once you get enough people, people they often call consumers as in consumer pigs, then customers can no longer fight back as there is enough blind support. To admit you are what they call consumers means you admit to being part of the problem. It is basic manipulation. It is far easier to believe everyone else is wrong then you being wrong and were tricked.

If people wanted to see companies clean up their act a bit, then those companies should be made responsible for any e-waste under their brand for 10 years after the sale date. If people could mail the stuff right back to them, and have to be reimbursed for the delivery - suddenly making stuff repairable and better support would likely be a thing.
@Dragoonsoul7878

The problem with this is people will abuse it to cheat the system. In turn you need some rules but due to rules they can push the window through lobbying or other tools such as ignorance to get right back to where we are now. To actually get around this there would have to be heavy punishments for lobbying that would destroy a company.

I just took apart an incredibly internally rusted Prolinea 433 (from 1995) and the issue there was not the rust directly, but the fact that there was so much rust dust on the fan that it burned it out. After replacing the fan, I got the machine to POST. That's all it was - I surmise that the computer won't turn on if the only fan in it (the CRT is built into the system here) doesn't spin. Louis reciting part numbers by memory is proof he has spent time in the trenches repairing screens. I’ve had a MacBook from 2013 that still runs, replaced the hard drive a couple times and swapped the disk drive for a data doubler. It’s too bad you can’t use the old macs with modern software, the 2013 was the best MacBook I owned. It seems to me that Apple really began to change when Jobs left, they have only gotten less and less innovative and more and more corporate in their sleezy business model. I love the operating system, and that is the only reason I use my current Hackintosh.

Through enough arguing with an Apple senior support rep, they agreed to authorize my local Apple store to cover the repair free of charge. For some reason though, they ended up having to replace not only the display but my logic board, top case, etc because they said after they put it together it wouldn't turn on. Apple quoted me a $500 dollar repair, but suggested I buy the M2 instead. Louis quoted me a similar number, likely due him having to replace the entire top section instead of just the screen. The nice thing about affordable quality notebooks like classic Thinkpads is one can easily afford two or several of them and always have a ready spare while rarely needing it (I would never be one machine deep since one of anything is one away from "none" and computers are necessities) or have machines for multiple OS and because hdd can be quickly swapped there is very little downtime even over many years use. Upgradeability is nice too. My 96GB and 128GB P52s were ordered with the cheapest placeholder hard drive and least RAM so I could do exactly what I anticipated and the company knowingly provided for, buy aftermarket RAM and nice large drives for their three drive bays each. Lenovo HMM are excellent as is serviceability. Nearly all the T61 I assembled from donors still run today as shop machines for jobs like flashing GM computers or reading manuals and ordering parts.

Thanks Louis, you point at 11:50 describes why I will after 3 basically non-repairable failures of high-dollar Apple Laptops I will not buy another new Apple laptop unless they fix their reliability and service issues. Instead, I just bought basically a new (A re-sold factory repaired warranty exchange), top of the line 4K XPS 15 Dell laptop for $600 that's comparable to $3k Macbook Pro. However, that Dell had an issue with screen flicker, but with a call to support, Dell expedited me an unused overstock, higher-spec version of the same model for no charge. Quite frankly, From past experience, I switched to Apple and swore never to buy another Dell Product, and I would much rather use the comparable Macbook for the reasons you mention Louis, and if Apple could provide the level of support Dell does on a refurbished product, I suspect Apple sales and profits would only benefit.

For me it´s already a no go with any laptop if they don´t make the internal parts easily accessible for maintenance, replacements etc. Granted i get that on the ultra cheap bottom line laptops stuff gets soldered on and you are pretty much stuck with whatever you have bought till it goes boom. And apple as a brand is for me like buying toilette paper for twice + the price of what other brands ask for, get the same product but some parts are sprinkled with itching powder to make the customer feel miserable for no reason. In case they run out of itching powder they put in serious effort to find something else that makes your experience equally awful or even worse. And you are allowed to pay a premium for that experience, how generous of them.

Meanwhile my Inspiron 5000 Dell laptop I bought in 2015 still works (keyboard needs replacing, and it only holds 1 hour charge), but it runs Win10 latest release, 16GB of DDR3 and a Evo 860 SSD. My DELL XPS M1210 I bought in 2006 still powers up, its slow and its keyboard needs to be replaced, and its battery doesn't hold a charge, but it still powers on and can boot up Win7. I vowed to never buy another Apple computer again.

I bought a MacBook after a year screen got damaged from a drop off a couch arm height. The apple store tech looked at it, working but damaged screen. I had them send it for repairs, Near two months, I get a call that water damage was found and rejected for repair. The apple store said that they had a falling out with the technician that accepted my laptop for repair. The apple store had called me and left a message telling me it is not worth repairing with water damage and a newer model of the MacBook would be a better decision. I was being hood winked and have not purchased apple computers since.

Wow, I must have got a real special laptop from Apple. A MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013). Still use it every day for hours and hours. Never replaced anything, everything just works, though the battery has a 58% health rating. To be honest, I'm not that careful about keeping it clean and tidy it just sits in the lounge room uncovered.

My dustgate in my macbook pro 2019 model was temperature up and hang (kernel hog cpu) when I connected the external monitor. It was only usable in clamshell mode. Only after I finished the warranty I dare to open up the back cover as I was afraid of voiding the warranty if I opened up the back cover by myself. Then I found out dust covered at fans. After clearing dust, it solves the heat issue and I can use the external monitor together with the laptop display.

I remember all the craze for the white macbook. A good chunk of my friends bought one in 2006~2007. lo and behold, most of them ended up with problems within a year, most notably the plastic shell being cracked all over and rubber peeling. Sadly, issues and defects are nothing new with Apple and, while I agree that every brand has its own issues, it happens again and again and again with our friends from Cupertino. I still remember how the Cube was supposed to be super sturdy, but quite a few users ended up with cracked plastic right from the factory.

I've been around since it all started. They have been the same since day 1 and in my 50 years on this planet I've yet to purchase anything Apple unless second hand for these exact reasons. They are "designer" products, which, to me means overpriced and under spec'ed. period. Even with PC by this day and age I'd hoped we all would have seen at least more modularity in the business in relation to laptops. I'm damn surprised (and incredibly thankful) desktop pc components haven't fallen victim to this way of business.

Apple products always seemed very fragile to me. I don't know anyone who has an iPhone that doesn't have a cracked screen or hasn't cracked their screen at some point just by bumping into a table or sitting down with the phone in their back pocket. Edit: Dust shouldn't destroy your computer. I've had laptops that lasted 10 years (in my dusty room 😅) without this being a problem. Obviously, you should still keep it clean, but durability is still important in tech design. We could have more durable tech if these companies wanted to make them.

I went from 5S to 13 Mini, I can confirm that they improved a lot. The ceramic backglass and aluminium frame are very sturdy (maybe due to the small size) and safe without Apple Care for years. That doesn't take away that simple things like Glide-to-Type are rife with censorship and inconsistencies. 😬

I completely agree. My AirPods Max that I used very preciously for over a year. Then it suddenly stopped charging and working. I’m from india, and found out they don’t service accessories. Felt so cheated when I knew I spent a lot of money on this product which lasted for just a fraction of what other cheaper products do.

Substitute Dell, Lenovo, Acer, etc. for Apple, and the message overall seems to be same though. I think where the discussion actually needs to go: we know they are doing a high level of engineering on the devices, the question is are they putting the same degree (or more) of rigor with actual real-world testing, fixing defects in the design, etc to resolve these before they hit the market? Personally I would tend to say no, just based on turn-around time and product line refreshes. But, it does seem like we have little insight into those design and testing processes (and I wonder how much input that the Foxconns of the world also have into the design process, so they can crank as many of them out as possible). Wonder if there are any reliability studies out there on these things, especially reflective of the combo of the Apple Silicon CPUs coming out, and the flood of sales during the pandemic. Finally...as someone that works in an enterprise setting that is probably close to half Mac and half Dell.....I wish I had good insight into what our own reliability stats look like, but when you are generally on a 3- to 5-year refresh cycle, these things get lost in the background noise and seem like have little impact. Frankly we have more problems with people spilling their drinks onto their laptops, than dust impinging on wires (but I work for a science-oriented group so that may be a factor).

The dirty little secret of the laptop industry is that the big brand names don't actually make laptops. Nearly all laptops are made by Taiwanese ODMs - original design manufacturers. They're like OEMs but they also design the product in addition to manufacturing it. The brand name just requests certain features be included in the design, and at the end they slap their label on it and ship it to you. Most brand names use multiple ODMs. Apple uses just one - Quanta. Quanta also makes laptops for Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, etc. So (1) you're not really getting anything manufactured better by buying a Macbook compared to a higher-end models from other brands (also made by Quanta). And (2) build quality doesn't correlate to brand name. The build quality of one Dell model may be more similar to a Macbook (both made by Quanta) than to another Dell model (made by Wistron). The presence of a middleman (the brand name) between the manufacturer (ODM) and end user (you and me) complicates the elimination of defects. A couple former ODMs eventually began making their own line of laptops (Asus and Acer - Asus made the original Powerbooks and the old plastic Macbooks for Apple, before spinning off their ODM division as Pegatron, Acer spunoff Wistron). But rather than fix the system, they became a part of it. And now those two brands sell laptops made by lots of different ODMs.

I'm not aware of any studies, but I know of one online shop that shows you warranty cases (in Germany there's a type of extended warranty by law, so we're looking at a timespan of 2 years from date of purchase). List goes like this (lowest amount of cases): 1. Fujitsu (0,8%) 2. Apple (0,9%) 3. Samsung (1,8%) 4. HP and Microsoft (2%) 5. Huawei and LG (2,2%) 6. Dell (2,7%) 7. Lenovo (3%) 8. Acer (3,2%) 9. Gigabyte (3,9%) 10. Asus (4,1%) Apple is also place 2 in turnaround times (6 days), Huawei is no. 1 with 3 days. So Apple is doing pretty well compared to the rest.

I got an m2 macbook pro 2022 and when I plug it into the wall I feel buzzing/shocks in the chassis of the notebook. Guess it cannot ground with the 2 pin adaptor that came with it. I wonder if it will harm the laptop, should I get a 3 pin extension cable? For some reason no 2022 model is listed in the compatibility list of the original 3 pin extension cable, is this model not supposed to be grounded?
The horrible truth about Apple's repeated engineering failures.
