Apple has released their new M1 Macs, but they only come with 8 or 16gb of ram. Is that enough for todays developers? Is it enough to keep from hitting the RAM Ceiling. If you are like me, you have 100 Chrome tabs, 2-3 terminal windows, some FTPs going, and IDEs.
So, the question is, can you use it? Let us find out together in this Episode of M1 Ball Z. Can Jeff overcome the Macbook Pro?

Hey! I'm software developer and in my normal day of work I'm using 2 instances of JetBrains Rider, one instance VS Code, Postman, Chrome, few terminals, skype and teams. On my ThinkPad x1 carbon with 16GB RAM with Pop_OS on board is preety much the limit of my memory before swap. So that's not true that no one will utilize that amount of memory. In conclusion - thanks for your movie, now I know that I should be careful with choosing MacBooks also. Cheers!

I've had some time to play with my mother's 8GB M1 Air before getting a 16GB one. It's absolutely insane just how much more the 16GB one can handle. I couldn't get the 16GB to slow down while I could relatively easily get the 8GB to slow down to a crawl.

I do agree. However these are entry levels. It's hard to believe but it's true. It that matter, whichever you get is not going to be that relevant. Not in this first generation. I have a 2013 MBP which I am not letting go yet, but these new Macs are sweet. Writing on the M1 right now. I would buy the 16GB but the waiting is long. I feel that these are for early adopters, PC users(to get a feel for Macs), and brave daring people. I am not sure it's a finished product, give it a couple of updates

Android studio will work soon. So will docker. I have no doubt. The intel macbooks on the other hand, will drop in value, as most macbook users are not developers, and all their apps (including Microsoft office) all work already, and perform better than the intel macbooks already.

good video It is decided then - just get a base model, 2nd hand M1 with 8GB, and use that for all my professional work - where I'm mostly diallled in via ssh to dozens of different machines, and only use VI for editing code. This is what I get paid for. But for the REAL work - the stuff that happens after I clock off - needs at least a Mac Studio, and probably a decent 14" MacBook Pro as well. And a Studio display. And some synths. A whole rack of synths, and quality speakers ... and more tablets, and a few Android and iOS devices. Hardware FTW

Are there any downsides to SWAP? Besides the faster deterioration of the SSD which is still going to outlast the machine anyway? Seems like with the new super fast SSD's 2400MB/s, SWAP isn't going to be really noticeable? Perhaps even faster SSD's will someday replace RAM?
@JeffTheITGuy

I am not sure except that SWAP is slower, so applications and workloads that require high speed memory are missing out on that

for a software developer (like me) having android studio build an app for android + xcode building the same app for ios, visual studio for an api running on localhost + teams (communication with my colleagues) + 20 or more tabs opened on chrome (mostly stackoverflow) + spotify, this is my daily routine, so basically, 16gb for a developer is mandatory, also, i forgot to mention that most of us will likely use windows on a vm, aka parallels which already requires 4gb of ram (minimum)

As a mobile application developer, I would say that 16gb is a mandatory to develop backend tasks and run simulator tasks. I was using a 2014 macbook pro 13inch to develop an mobile app for a company (the running speed is 10x slower than m1 pro) I am now feeling more efficient and confident to develop program (No need to take long time for compile the code :P )

Hey man, I'm on a tight budget. So should I go for 16gb MBA or 8gb MBP (512gigs) but there are quite a few cases to be considered, hope you can look into them: 1. I'll do mostly backend web dev personal projects (Nodejs and all). 2. I don't run a ton of apps at once or many chrome tabs open at once. 3. I live in India, it gets really hot here in summer (upwards of 104F or 40C). 4. Waiting period for MBA 16gb is quite long (6-7 weeks). If you can give me an answer keeping the above points in mind. It'll be of great help. Thank you bro

I usually have at work 3 workspaces of IntelliJ (somewhat like android studio), I have a UI server, ui backend running locally, in parallel i am deploying stuff to servers and scp eats a lot of stuff, I have a zoom meeting on where I share stuff with my colleagues, I do scala compilation on massive projects - those take quite a while and make mac fans sound like crazy. I need about 32 G RAM, 64 for me is future proof mostly.
@meditating010
@meditating010 3 жыл бұрын
btw I have to run spark locally at times to do stuff - I have usecases where I'd like to develop locally - using minikube, and run 4 or 5 services against local spark cluster to churn some big data numbers ... those definitely eat a lot of memory - I understand all cannot be done on a single machine (AWS or synonymous) but some workloads are so easy to debug locally ...

Please correct me if im wrong, but doesn't your company provide you with a server to work on? If most of your work happens on the server I don't understand why you need that much ram as a developer. Is there a reason why you need to run your code locally as opposed to on the server?

I want to get the best value. I want to keep this new Macbook for at least 5 years doing web dev, casual tasks, some photo editing, Java and unity. What do you think I should choose? MBA or MBP? Clearly 16gb ram. I'm using the laptop as my desktop. With external keyboard, mouse and 4k 60hz monitor. The Macbook will be a desktop and a second monitor. Why I want a macbook and not a mac mini? Because portability. You don't know when you need to go somewhere, and I don't want to buy 2 machines.

Hi. Currently only parts of unity are native to the M1 chips. Some run on the Rosetta 2 emulator which gets about 75% of the performance that a native app does. However, I would say the pro due it having an extra GPU core and more power available to it

‘It is the right machine for devs because it is going in that direction’ .... seriously?!? ... evaluating an experience is not done with activity monitor... but i cant imagine you ll understand what that means
@JeffTheITGuy
@JeffTheITGuy 3 жыл бұрын
I am assuming that you stopped once you heard that line to write your comment and paraphrase me. That's ok, I can sum up the rest of the video for context. I was stating that the M1 chips are heading in the right direction to be the best for devs, I then followed it up with but currently it isn't due to the lack of native support for VMs, Virtualisation. Docker, etc. Using activity monitor was a tool or a gauge to show how much ram was being used during the testing, and while you are correct evaluating an experience isn't done with an activity monitor, not using a tool though leaves it to just subjectivity and opinions. Also, on context, just like with reading, if you only read a line or two then you don't have the context of a written piece and can't grasp what it is about, but I can't imagine YOU'LL understand what that means.
