I have the new Macbook Pro with the M1 CPU in the studio, and I decided to make a video to give you guys my thoughts on it. This is not a super-detailed review, as Mac isn't my platform of choice. Since my primary OS is Linux, I thought it might make for an interesting video.

I 100% despise apple junk but gotta be honest... putting a cellphone's processor on a laptop is amazingly good, considering a phone with a battery that big would also perform the same way. Smart move to use that processor and still over charge users for it.

Apple is in a unique position. YEARS of processor hopping... Cross-platform support, Emulation, intel win-bridging software, virtualizing... good stuff. .... Also, Apple listened to feedback from users, in terms of UI. 'User First'. I'm still amazed they didn't let the phone/web success TOTALLY mess up the Macs.... The benefits of 'doing it all'.

Ive used macOS for 30 years and I've never experienced the thing you describe where an alert in application A steals focus while working in application B. In fact, I've occasionally had an alert for application A go unnoticed while using application B, until I switched to A and discovered it hadn't finished whatever I thought it was doing because it needed me to respond to the alert. Unless this was introduced with v11 (I haven't updated yet), I think you've got some setting set strangely. (In fact, precisely because macOS doesn't do that, it drives me batty when windows 10 (at work) does this all the time.)

It would have been nice to see an actual benchmark from your old mac to the new one and get some hard numbers to compare. In everyday use like word processing, email and such a fast processor isn't really a good test of speed. However, seeing the game run smoothly was impressive. I am surprised there was no mention of battery life. That's kind of a major thing in regards to laptops and Apple is making some pretty big claims. Have you had a chance to test this? If so, how did it do?

Apple is on the cutting edge with the M1 and it will put pressure on AMD and especially Intel to up their game. With the ARM chip now fully in the mainstream of computing, this will certainly help to further develop the Raspberry Pi and those developing for the RISC platform. My hope is that eventually, we will see more powerful ARM and RISC chips being used in the Pinebook and System 76 computers with Linux running natively. With respect to your experience, it was interesting to get a more sober assessment of the M1. From my reading and viewing the main commentary has been about how blazingly fast the M1 is compared to AMD or Intel machines. From all the reports I have seen everyone is gushing over the M1 Macs and almost no one has found any flaws. I appreciated your views here and I look forward to a time when we start to get the benefit of more powerful alternative chips that run Linux.

Nice with your input on the M1 powered MacBooks. However, I don’t really think your “how fast does it fell” comparison does the chip justice. If you have a decent computer with an SSD then, OS aside, they will all feel pretty snappy. But the M1 chip clearly beats a vast majority of Intel chips on different heavy workload tasks like encoding or compiling. Also: Please consider doing a follow up video with using the terminal and getting the best of both MacOS and Linux. Would love to see that.

@@zegert Also my M1 MBP doesn't heat up at all even with CPU & GPU intensive tasks running, it always stays cool to the touch (the first couple days for me felt warm though). I've never had an issue with Firefox thus far. Except a couple, most apps I use run via Rosetta 2 and works surprisingly better than my previous Intel MacBook Pro. I do agree with him on the thick bezel, even though I don't care much about it, it looks outdated. I also do agree with him that it's annoying that you've got to purchase a 3rd party app to do a basic task, but that's pretty much it, the Mac would always win at least 80% of the rest of the features you'll compare between the two especially from a Mac user's perspective.

My only surprise here is that the power plug is connected to the Macbook. You don’t need to clinge to the charger with the Macbook Pro like on the Intel models. I really liked hearing your opinions on Apple laptops/macOS, especially as you seem very knowledgeable and fair in your judgement. As a Mac user I face a lot of criticism and find myself constantly having to defend my choice, only to find out those critics have never owned or tried using a Mac. I do use Windows and Linux for work but as a personal machine I like what the Mac offers. It’s a little like having a Linux PC since it is BSD-based, but with support and bundled apps from Apple that make life a bit easier. The integration with an iPhone is great too. I agree that the window management is lacking and I wish they would improve that. For example: minimising a window then later hunting for it because it is now a “non available window” and is still open but hidden, only to be revealed through four-finger swiping down or the awkward cmd+tab+alt then release tab whilst holding alt. That drives me nuts. Tiling has now been added by just hovering over the “full screen” circle of a window border. Using the alt key you can resize the window to half a screen. It’s not as full features as your extension but it’s a nice addition. Also when you mentioned gestures, did you know you can grab a window with a three-finger drag? That’s a feature I miss when I switch to using Windows.

@williamp6800
@williamp6800 3 жыл бұрын
The M1 is Apple’s first chip for desktops/laptops. It is positioned against Intel’s low end 15 watt chips that were in the Mac models that have been relaxed. And that’s why the Intel versions of the higher end Mac Mini and MacBook Pro 13” still remain in Apple’s line up. Also why the MacBook Pro 16” is still Intel based. Next year, Apple will release the next step up, probably called the M1x if past Apple chip naming patterns continue. Or maybe it will be based on the the next generation of Apple Silicon and called an M2x. Whatever it is, and whatever it’s named, that chip and variants of it, will replace the top end configurations of the Mac Mini, MacBook Pro 13”, and the MacBook Pro 16”. I think the most confusing part of this is that in many benchmarks the M1 is producing results that make it competitive performance wise with chips that are a couple of levels up the product line from Intel, leading people to think that this is Apple’s chip intended to go up against them. It isn’t. And that’s why those Intel models still remain in the Mac Mini and MacBook Pro lines. So if you want the 16” display, definitely wait. It’s replacement will offer even better performance than the ones based on this first M1 chip. But if you’re happy to have a smaller screen, then you can go ahead. Just make sure the software you need runs on them. As emulation goes, what the new Macs offer is pretty sweet, but it’s still emulation. And since not a lot of non-Apple apps have Apple Silicon versions yet, you’ll likely be depending on the emulation for at least a couple of months minimum unless you run all Apple software. Three to six months from now, likely almost any application under active development will be running native and it won’t be an issue for the vast majority of people. Unless your current computer isn’t working and you have to buy now, I’d suggest bring patient. In a few months you won’t even have to give a thought to emulation, you’ll see how the new 16” compares, and can make a well informed decision.

Get Intel only if you want a really hot machine with really loud fans. It ALWAYS pays to wait when you're planning to buy new tech. The M1 is the bottom-line of the new Apple Silicon, ideal only for the MacBook Air. Newer, faster chips are expected very soon for the more upscale models.

Normally windows user all life, was pissed lately about continuous updates, cloud sync, notifications etc... when you start your system and spending few minutes every time to fight of these stuff it’s gets annoying over time so switched to apple m1 much better overall feeling even the spec of the system is somewhat lower. M1 Still missing few general apps like Netflix, Amazon video that is strange no one is mentioned in their reviews. I was the exact same. Used Windows for around 15 years and fancied a change. I was ready to spend a decent amount on a laptop and I had heard that Apple PC’s held their value and worked for a long time. Here I am 5 years later still using the same laptop every day both for work and personal, still going strong. It did take me some time to convert, it was actually quite frustrating at first. But now I wouldn’t go back. I’m tempted by the M1 Macs but I need to have Windows for certain programs.

Hey jay, love your videos been trying to make Linux my daily driver. Been working on fixing problems in POPOS in my spare time. Just thankful that my sound is now working lol. I have problems when I suspend. That's another problem. I think you just got a mac at a bad time when they were still working fixing things. 1. The notification problem, I have all notifications turned off so could not comment on that. Minor problem ? 2. Win for pop os , yes pop os has way better workspaces /tiling / stack. 3. Buying Software - Download Brew, brew is free htop. You can use system monitor or htop. Use BetterTouch tool minor fee, amethyst for free. 4. The firefox problem, can't blame mac for that. Never really had problems with firefox. Mostly use brave. I must say I've been using Intel Mac since 2015 so yea... Linux on and off since 2001. Started with slackware.

15:12 > dynamic workspaces from gnome is just amazing if you are so excited about gnome's window management "high quality features", then i3wm will literally knocks you. From perspective i can't imagine how i could be efficent while working on non-tiling wm, spending 90% of time switching active windows instead of just focusing on what should be done.
@lis6502
@lis6502 3 жыл бұрын
@Learn Linux that's why i've said "90% of time". One is keyboard driven window management, that is: move, resize, open windows. But even bigger advantange imho is tiling with workspaces- every new window borns "maximized". And alike applications can be grouped into workspace, like database client with pdf reader with documentation. Even when win10 announced "workspaces" i couldn't got used to manipulating windows with mouse and fact that newly spawned windows just "overlap" and cover others. yeah, i3 is like a drug, once you try and you're doomed :D

Featues that you are "missing" are just not needed in mac os workflow. For example, it doesn't create new virtual desktops because you are supposed to make app go fullscreen to separate it completely, or it doesn't have usage graphs at the toolbar because system manages resources effectively and you just don't need that information at all times Window tiling is present in fullscreen mode, even though it's very limited. You just need to drag windows onto each other when they are both in fullscreen. Tiling is just not considered as something you need when you work with mac os

14:50 Actually, I am quite comfortable with the Desktop names. Because I keep my focus apps in full screen (browser, mail, office app that I keep open all day, etc.). When you take an app to full screen, it automatically creates a desktop for that and the overview shows said app's name. Desktops are numbered only when you create them yourself, so I never even had to think about it.

That's a good point. You normally don't look at the desktop names, it's always relative to the desktop you're on. It never crossed my mind to read the names until now.

Always appreciate your calm and intelligent reviews, Jay. This one has me puzzled at a few points, though. A Mac should be the most natural alternative to a Linux user. What's wrong with a real certified UNIX when you're already using a unixoid system? And especially one, that requires NO tinkering at all, unless you really want to. No idea about update alerts, either, maybe it's got to do with those workspaces that I don't use. Updates from the Mac App Store present themselves as a red bubble on the icon, browsers will show a hint somewhere in their GUI. Can't remember anything getting constantly in my way really. You also dedicated a huge portion of the video to the lack of native apps, which is clearly not Apple's fault or problem. You said as much, but I think the focus was overboard. By now, so many devs have released optimized versions (which would have never happened with any other OS), that it's almost a non-issue. By the way, to me, the little things like the stats tool on your screen are one of the hallmarks of macOS. The sheer amount of useful little gadgets and tools is breathtaking. And yes, many of them cost money. I think that's preferable to not having them in the first place. That said, there usually is always a free alternative. Also, since you specifically mentioned cost, I'd like to point out that you ALWAYS PAY for your software. Either with money, data or time. Sometimes you can choose, sometimes you can't.

Any Linux user knows that proprietary interfaces slow down development and limit the options that the end user will end up having. And I'm not referring to tinkering, but regular application development. If it weren't for cross-platform development frameworks such as Qt, the available software for the macOS platform would be even less. That's an essential flaw of the Mac platform: that everything is required to be done in an Apple-approved way. That, and generally the shady business practices of the company, from the unethical collection and use of personal information, to the sweatshop suppliers, to the creation of a mountain of e-waste, etc etc etc.

Thank you! People think I'm crazy when I say virtual workspaces on Gnome or Pantheon are waaaay superior than Win or MacOs. Make them adaptive seems to me so simple to implement if a couple of If-Then statements that I don't understand why those platforms don't do it. I never had your notifications problem, bu I'm also always on DND... Regarding the app for tiling, there's one called Rectangle that works pretty well with shortcuts and even vertical monitors, its also FOSS. Can't work without it and clippy.

It is. On the LTT video they tested a bunch of dongles, monitors, etc found that the I/O bandwidth is fairly limited. They didn’t put 4 ports because then people would try to use them all and complain when something didn’t work.

I always had a problem with Firefox and the lastest version of the MacOs. Going from Lepard to the next version took Monzilla about 3 updates until the performance finally equaled Safari. Then the next version of Mac0s was the same thing over again. I believe it's an Apple thing.

Re: Can’t rename virtual workspaces. I can’t say I’ve ever needed to rename virtual desktops, just seems like a way to waste time. The swipe gesture is fast enough, or, you can just click on the app in the dock and it’ll bring you to it if you lost it, same with Alt+Tab, which I use too much.

Oh they have two ports on this M1 MacBook Pro because it replaces the entry-level MacBook Pro (the intel version also had only 2 thunderbolt-3 ports). They'll probably launch a version with 4 ports in the future. (They are still selling an Intel version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt-3 ports).

I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that macOS has "rough edges" compared to Linux. As a Linux user myself, the big, big advantage of Macs is that Macs have far superior stability and far less bugginess than Linux. For software development work, this means that one gets most of the advantages of having a Unix-like system, but also the stability of a mass-market commercial operating system with the development power of a billion dollar company. There's a reason why Macs are overrepresented in software engineering. I love Linux, but I have to dig into stackoverflow threads for arcane console-based fixes to things that should be working or implemented out-of-the-box way more with Linux than I ever have to with Windows or Mac. Sometimes it's just exhausting to go down the Google rabbit hole for the 4th time this week because your last hack-y fix meant that your video card stopped working or whatever.

Buying a Mac means using software optimized for that hardware. During your Linux experience, where you using a Linux OEM machine like System76 or Tuxedo? I bet not. Saying MacOS is more stable is silly, it is just that it runs well on the hardware it was designed for (duh!). Linux generally runs well OOTB even on hardware it wasn't designed for (can the hackintosh community say that about MacOS...?). Mediocre propietary garbage.

@@liamhemmings9039 tired of occasional buginess or having to tinker a bit on some hardware? Buy a Linux machine. Just like you buy a MacOS machine or a Windows machine. PD: the idea that Linux was developed for Macs is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
@elimgarak3597
@elimgarak3597 3 жыл бұрын
@@liamhemmings9039 Even if you had a Linux kernel/distro developed for Mac, you would be dealing with a non-official product here, as Apple did not develop it. It would be an unofficial port with no warranty. Btw, bear in mind that a kernel talks directly to the hardware. That is different from a userland app like Office, so your example does not apply. Compare that with using a System76 Thelio. In that case, the hardware manufacturer also makes the OS, including some specific drivers too. They even make their own firmware as well. Anyway, I think I've made my point. Cheers.
