The MacBook Pro is one of the best laptops you can buy right now in 2023 but how does a 2 year old MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip shape up right now? We've been using it as a creator device for things like Resolve, Photoshop and Adobe Premiere for two years straight and there are some amazing benefits but also some bottlenecks.

Got same model at end of 2021 - coming up on 2 full years now. Love it, handles everything I throw at it perfectly, graphic design (Adobe CC), Final Cut Pro, all smooth and quick, no issues. Love the design, the build quality, the screen and speaker quality. By far the best Mac laptop I've owned, and a huge step up from my previous 15" Intel MacBook Pro.

Purchased a 2021 M1 Macbook Pro 14" and it has been amazing. I purchased it used for a lower price and constantly use it every day for over 8 hours since purchase. I have AlDente so when i'm plugged into the wall it wont charge over 80% and my overall battery health is only at 87%. I have travelled 6 month of each year and still have no scratches or dents. Keyboard is flawless and trackpad is MINT. Dont forget about the crystal clear display! I was Linux and Windows my entire life before this and I've had no regrets with this beast.

Same here with my M1 MacBook Pro. The performance is unbelievable, the battery is the best out there, speakers and screen are first class. For me the best screen size is the 16 inch over the 14 inch model since portability isn't a thing for me. Still using Ventura and I'm full satisfied with the experience of MacOS. The best laptop I've even used and owned.

I got my M1 Pro on release day and it's never let me down since. I'm pretty anal on my tech as well so mine, like yours, still looks brand new. My keys are showing age but I wouldn't say look worn and I've used mine daily. Not only that but if I'm working on other machines, work laptops, I use it to watch content. I have an M1 Max studio for Audio production but find myself using this half the time anyway. I just plug mine in when needed though, battery. My battery is Normal and I'm at 98% after 2 years. I only charge my iPhone magsafe and just nightly and my 14 Pro Max is at 100% while other seems to be having issue. Thanks for making this for everyone! While I'm sure someone will say something because you are being positive on Apple but if they step back it's a pro and a con right? I mean I hear great things about the M3 that's coming but not sure I need one. Three of my son have 14" pro model (2 M1 & 1 M2) for video or coding work and all have experienced the same great experience. To me the investment is well worth it.

People said Apple products are expensive, but when competitors like Razer creates products with the same build quality as Apple, they either cost the same or more, still their longevity isn't as good as Apple products. Especially the laptops. Till this day, I haven't found a laptop with good display, speakers, chasis and performance per watt as M-Series MBP yet.

I liked my old 2015 Razer Blade but man they fell off with build quality when the changed their design in 2017. My 2015 had the best trackpad and keyboard I’ve ever used on any laptop, including my MacBook. The screen was great too, although the bezels were fat. The new Razer Blades have mediocre versions of all of those and reliability issues as well, while still being super expensive. Very sad for Razer.

The battery life is still exceptional, it’s still really fast, it’s still cool and quiet, and it still looks and feels great. If you can find a used or refurbished M2 Pro, it’s a great buy. In my experience, the most impressive thing about the battery life is standby time. TBF at least in Germany the M2 MBP even if it's the 13" version with the touch bar is about 800€ more expensive than the XPS 13 (both with 16 GB RAM and 512GB SSD // 1250€ for the XPS vs 2060€ for the MBP). If it's the 14" MBP it's almost double the price (2400€). So it's not a fair comparision at all in the first place because these 2 Laptops aren't even close in the same price range.

I hated mac's until I got one. It's pretty common for tech people to hate them because they try to compare the paper specs to that of a windows machine- and you just can't. They're optimized so much- build quality is incredible. Touch pad is unrivaled, and windows machines always have terrible speakers for reasons i don't understand.

I had a XPS 15 9550 and it blue screen like crazy for the first 6 months till it finally stable down, but the heat management is horrible. Years later, I gotten a XPS 17 9730, (this year's 2023 model) -- I spent SGD$4900 on it. With a 4070, 32GB RAM and 1TB of SSD. The machine was so much cooler to the touch and it can even game at 1600p high/ultra rather quietly. --- Here come's the catch, the audio stutters 2 weeks into owning it, nevermind -- a few weeks later, it prompt for a BIOS update, and so I did. It stuck at 100% progress bar till the next morning. I called Dell and they told me to bring it down, when I brought it down. They then said to not unplug while it was updating, but what am I suppose to do? Leave it in the wall indefinitely? Dell refuse to refund me and I sold it off with a $900 loss after they fixed it with back and forth emailing for over 50 days.... I sold because I don't want to deal with the driver issues anymore.. Going to switch to a Mac soon

@@kyle-qw5yx I didn't hate macs, but after I testdrove one for a week at work, now I love the hardware and hate the MacOS. It's just... Not for a serious user. It's not for multiple screens. It's not for keyboard only (or mostly :D). Even though the M2 Pro was faster than my normal workstation i9-9900k (like MUCH faster), I was slower to do the work in the end. Just the fact that I cannot put multiple chrome icons on the dock (I use multiple profiles at work - work account, private, and two more for dev). I spent 3 out of the 5 days on installing different apps, like AltTab (yes, you need an app to be able to alt tab between two chrome windows), Rectangle, some better terminal (the default one SUCKS), but there are things that cannot really be "fixed": single dock even with multiple screens, single app menu bar at the top (why?!), the full screen thingy, managing files (where are the apps installed? I need to change a config file!), the click-to-activate-app is infuriating. PLus, I didn't get the "it's silent and cold" - since the default fan curve prioritizes silence over temp, with what I did (software dev with docker, databases, multiple other tools), it didn't work as a LAP-top - it was too hot. And once it got too hot, it was getting quite loud. Yes, it was silent and cooler for longer than my Ryzen laptop, but still - it's not magic, it gets hot and loud. Also, the M2 keyboard felt weird - like I was popping a bubble wrap with every key stroke. The touchpad is really, I have to admit. While I'm at the keyboard, who TF designed the MacOS keyboard shortcuts? cmd + ctrl + alt + 4 to take a screenshot? WTF?

Well, I must say that while I am typing the review on the keyboard itself of the MacBook Pro M1, it's been my daily driver ever since I bought it last year. To be honest, it's a beast of a machine. I love it, and there is just nothing that I can complain much about. The only thing that I would complain about is its integration with AirPods. Despite how Apple tends to make their hardware by using outdated Bluetooth standards, I got the latest AirPods Pro 2nd Gen, but still, I feel a lot of difficulties, especially when I have to do some sort of VoIP call over my MacBook. The voice sounds robotic. I'm not sure whether it's like the integration or the hardware itself that's in the airport or the Mac. That's a bottleneck, but yeah. It seems like Mac's Bluetooth bandwidth can't handle too many devices at once, especially with airpods (output and input at the same time).

Keeping the battery topped up is bad for the battery, it is much worse than simply using the device on battery. Ideally you'd want to keep the charge between 40-60% for the least amount of wear over time, but no one does that so keeping it between 20-80% is the next best thing, but it also helps to go through a cycle once or twice a week... that's at least much better than keeping it charged or at 80%+ all week. What Apple needs to do is give us more control over how the laptop charges, because their optimized charging is shit. There are tools like AlDente where you can set the battery charge to 50% and it's worth using a tool like that when you are plugged in most of the time, but they're not perfect either.

His 81% health with 125 cycles doesn't sound good to me. In my case I have an M1 MacBook Air with 265 cycles and 90% health. I have a program running that prevents it from charging over a certain percentage, so it never charges over 80%. I think that's the best way of preserving the battery health.

Perfect, no, I’m not a huge fan of the keyboard layout. I don’t understand why apple can’t put an actual delete key on the damn keyboard, why they force us to do shift-backspace for that functionality. This has to be one of the purchases I’ve made in the past 10 years. Funnily enough one of my worst was buying the 2019 MacBook Pro 16in at the time. Luckily I don’t lose much since I sold it 3 months before the M1 Pro 16in was released that I was still able to get top dollar for that MacBook lol. But Apple absolutely killed it with the new Apple silicon chips.

Did you get any more of those random reboot errors? I have the same model (2021 M1Pro 16) and it did the same thing until it eventually died and needed a new logic board. When I would wake it from sleep, it would reboot to a blank screen and take a min or two (after several power key presses) to return to the OS login screen.

@@Rob__James once the battery drops below 80% and you use it doing heavy tasks on battery, it will be unstable. As you say, keeping it on the charger is damaging, and I would recommend if you don't need the battery usage to get a desktop. Mac. Otherwise use a third party app to control the battery charge, around 50% is best.

Everything you have detailed here very well is my feeling toward my base 16'' m1 pro. They may have made these machine's "too good" comparatively to the subsequent generations. For example multiple nand's with faster SSD speeds than subsequent generations etc. This laptop struck the perfect balance between heat (there is none), noise, performance, and battery life.(Battery at 94% still with 53 cycles BTW!, and SSD health still at 99%)

Just remember with refurb spec. Max warranty is 1 year. For normal purchase you can extend to 3 years. For a person like me who doesn’t see himself changing this laptop in the next 3 years. That makes a huge difference when choosing which one to purchase. This refurb warranty applies to us here in South Africa. Not sure if the US or X place is any different. Just my two cents

When the maximum capacity drops under 80% he will get the battery service message. Temperature, how long you leave the battery charged at 100% or 0% & discharge rate are all factors that influence battery degradation. But considering how little power ARM chips consume, even with a battery service message you can carry on using it and still get a solid 4-5 hours.

Upgraded from M1 MacBook Pro 14 to Lenovo Legion Pro 5i with RTX 4070 and I don't regret it a bit. I got MBP mostly just for video editing and I thought it would enable me to edit on the go (Mostly Davinci Resolve Studio and occasionally Adobe Premiere Pro). But in practice, I never really "needed" to edit "on the go". This ability to edit videos at the coffee shop is peddled by KZfaqrs but unless you are a KZfaqr (especially of the type who needs to travel a lot and can't wait until you get to the hotel room to edit/upload videos) this doesn't really matter much in the real world. Now that Intel also added media engine for hardware video encoding/decoding and with Nvidia's RTX cards, video editing has been a breeze. It was also a breeze with MacBook Pro but now I also carry my games with me which is a lot of fun when I'm traveling and stuck at a hotel. Carrying a MacBook just felt boring. The only thing I really miss about it is it's speakers when I don't feel like wearing the headphones. The great battery life everyone talks about didn't really translate for me. I got like 7-8 hours of light use, 5.5 hours of mixed-use, and 2-2.5 hours if I push it hard. Which is fine but these days a lot of AMD laptops also get the same or more battery life on light workloads. So, I don't understand why battery life gets so hyped by these KZfaqrs. And yes, I appreciate how it is quiet and doesn't spin the fans much but it is not a deal-breaker for me. Also, I experienced a lot of lags with it that I don't do with my current laptop. Surprised how little this is talked about. I use a lot of tabs in browsers and that routinely caused me lags. I believe this is due to the quick swap functionality Apple implemented where it kinda uses some SSD storage as RAM on demand and swaps between the RAM. I guess this shouldn't be an issue if you got a 32 or 64 gig model but we know more than 90% get the 16 Gig one. There were way too many times if felt like I was using a cheap walmart laptop because of these cursor-spinning lags when I'm just browing. Luminar Neo and sometimes Adobe Lightroom also caused such lag when dealing with large libraries of photos. I don't experience those lags anymore with my current laptop. You don't hear these very often if you were to just listen to KZfaqrs. Bottom line being, really think what kind of a user you are and what features make an actual difference in how you use/want to use your computer. KZfaqrs review a lot of laptops, because of that naturally they are biased/sensitive towards the differences between laptops. Don't make a purchase decision based on their bullet points. A lot of things are nice to have but may not really add much value to your usecase. There will be plenty of users for whom a MacBook Pro will be a perfect choice but its not a one size fits all and not "superior" to everything else out there. While Apple decided to ride on the M1 success with a lackluster M2 update, there are laptops out there now with much more raw power but it all comes down to how much power you will actually use and what provides you more value.
@pransis

Holding off an upgrade is a great decision. M1 Pro is still great. Plus the M2 Pros, specifically the base models, I believe only has one SSD chip depending on the spec, which has a significant performance hit compared to the M1 Pro units which has two SSD chips.
@Wokiis
@Wokiis 7 ай бұрын
Hard to find the practical disadvantage for the base SSD. Sure it has lower sequential throughput but random IO perfomance is the same so unless your life is running disk benchmarks the base SSD will be fine and not a bottleneck. Not saying one should upgrade from M1, but holding the SSD as the reason just isn’t sound. Surely the increased core count, battery life and much-improved GPU has a higher impact than what they did to the SSD.
