@@mitchellroberts7954 Well yeah, I mean, Apple hasn't "innovated" for years; they imitate. They just have such a big presence that everything seems like an "Apple idea" when they make it popular by integrating whatever they stole this time around. Not complaining, it's a good business practice and it clearly works to convince people of how "smart" they are.

Is thinness really a big selling point for most people? Or is this obsession just manufactured hype? I for one wouldn't care if a device is 1" thick as long as it is functional/durable/repairable and long running.

I have had 3 of the XPS15 models for work. All of them have had batteries puff up. In all cases, Dell has said that they will not sell the battery outside warranty, and they quoted $300 for depot repair under warranty, even though we have Dell certified techs at my company. We have several XPS 15 sitting around with no battery in them at all because they puffed 12.1 months into ownership and they weren't under warranty and Dell won't sell us batteries.

I don't really understand why you'd retract your right to repair demands if Apple suddenly gave in - what's the difference between saying "be reasonable or we'll bring in the government to make you be reasonable" and passing a law that says "you must be reasonable"? In both cases the government is being used to enforce some sort of restriction on the company's behavior... at least in the second case you don't need to rely on years of lobbying whenever another company tries to pull off this nonsense, because it's already illegal. And if Apple was already in compliance with that law, what harm could it be for them?

I reject the notion that government ruins everything. Are private contractors better than enlisted volunteers at military service? Would air traffic control be significantly better as a private enterprise than it is now? How so? USPS packages tend to arrive at their intended location. If you want something delivered faster, go ahead and pay a private company. Same goes for healthcare, at roughly half the cost of U.S. healthcare, European socialized medicine produces significantly better outcomes than our privatized system. Millionaires may get better care in the U.S. but by almost all statistical metrics, European healthcare outcomes are better. If a universal socialized system emerged, there could still be a premium system available for the wealthy. Public k-12 education's main problem IMO is that its primarily funded by local taxes, meaning there is a wide disparity between the available funds in an affluent district compared to a poor district. Close second to unions though, some people shouldn't be teachers, yet are. I'm wasting my time here, nobody is going to read this.

Ideally, the government would not have the power to stop people like Henrik huseby from refurbishing iPhone screens by redefining refurbishing as counterfeiting. I would prefer to not lobby at all, but if I do not Lobby, my business will be eventually destroyed as the law will be slowly written to describe what I do as intellectual property violations and counterfeiting. Ideally, there would be no gun in the room oh, so my opponent would not be able to shoot me. Government doesn't ruin everything it touches. Government dominated by for-profit corporations, entities with a vested interest in making sure government functions inefficiently, ruins everything it touches. If we had more accountable politicians, less beholden to the business sector, then I think government would function better. I should also point out that it's for-profit corporations that tend to ruin everything they touch, because they always overextend, always take too much, and always do what they can to destroy everything in their path. Consumer electronics are a good example of this. Ultimately, why are repairs not economical? Because shit is made in China. Why is stuff cheaper to make in China? Because they treat their workers like trash. Why do our lawmakers allow the import of devices produced via what is essentially slave labor? Because the business interests want it that way.

Yes it does. Let's take intellectual property as one example which is a government construct. What do you think would happen if Apple didn't have IP over its products? Lots of copycat companies would spring up and Apple would be forced to compete instead of sitting in their comfort zone and monopolisticly forcing their unrepairable products at exorbitantly high prices down the customers throat. Competition would be vigorous and the only way Apple or its competitors be able to get a brief edge over each other would be to offer their customers better value for the dollars they spend. That means replaceable batteries and backcovers that can be unscrewed, ie treating people like adults. Also there would be less need for lawyers and they'd have to get real jobs as engineers. If something is a good idea, then it doesn't need a government mandate. It will be adopted or implemented voluntarily based on merit.

Great points. This is purely anecdotal, but I would like to share. I shattered my XR screen yesterday and brought it into the Apple store. They tried to run diagnostics through the lightning port since the screen was unresponsive, but the port also looked to be damaged somehow. They offered to replace the entire device for the same cost as a screen replacement. I've done my fair share of basic component level repair on Windows laptops and gaming consoles, but no longer have the time nor would like to take the risk attempting to repair the XR screen myself. In this case, I was more than happy to have walked out of the store with a brand new device for $200. I appreciate your thoughts and videos. Thanks!
@kingzach74
@kingzach74 5 жыл бұрын
A screen does not cost $200 to replace. Nowhere near that. Sorry to say it, but you got scammed by Apple. It is unlikely you broke the entire screen, most likely just the exterior glass, front glass or Digitizer. This part costs between $18.99 and $25.99 on eBay and usually the sellers include tools. If your screen's colors bled and splintered all over, well...then you probably fully broke the screen. If instead just the glass is broken but the screen still worked, i.e. there are cracks but you can still see the screen as normal, then you don't need to fully replace the screen or the device itself. The actual LCD screen and Digitizer together only cost around $86 on eBay. Apple probably doesn't pay anywhere near that much as they buy their screens in bulk and get massive discounts on the LCD screens, digitizers, chipsets, and other parts. You say you walked out of the store with a brand new device for $200, but instead, you paid $799 for a device that should have had a more durable screen, to begin with, then you paid an additional $200 to get a replacement device and never had the problem fixed. So basically you paid $999($799+$200) for a device that cost maybe $200-$300 for Apple to make. Meanwhile, I'm here delighted by my gorgeous, fast, sleek, sexy Essential Phone that cost me $285 on Amazon, unlocked, and it only cost me $55 and 20 minutes of my time to replace the screen on my phone.

Oh, I probably should have mentioned. I dropped the handle end of a 1/2" drive breaker bar directly onto the display, causing it to shatter. It was pretty bad. Paying around ~$100 for parts and waiting for them to arrive would mean I'd be out a phone for at least a few days, if not weeks. I had a working phone by that evening for $200. Regardless, Apple still lies about their hardware. I have a MacBook Pro 5,1, which is a little worn down, but still works fine. Good thing I didn't pay any money for the unit, and nor would I ever! In the Mac OS App store, they flat out told me that my hardware would not support Mojave. Well, Mojave is running perfect on the laptop without any hitches at all. This is one of many nails that I keep driving into the coffin of the Apple company. Am I supposed to feel sorry for Apple when they claim money lost due to people actually fixing their products: motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/zmd9a5/tim-cook-to-investors-people-bought-fewer-new-iphones-because-they-repaired-their-old-ones I have spend too much time in supporting them and their customers. When I first start working with Apple was back when Intel acquired Dayna Communications that made mainly Apple networking products. This was when you could still buy Motorola Starmax systems, etc. Apple clones were awesome! I loved Apple then. I always wanted one. Even before then growing up a teenager, it was the envy of my neighborhood when you heard your friend's father had an Apple IIe that you would go play Lode Runner on. Then Steve Jobs stepped in and killed the ability of having clones that were giving people cheaper alternatives. Don't ever say that Apple isn't about the money! That is simply a lie! Then over the years of dealing with the iMac 2nd Generation and the no fan over heating killing the parts. To the fanless complete wonder of the G4 Cube which was high tech CRAP! I lost respect for Apple then. I remember a display they had in CompUSA stores in the Apple section where it stated word for word, "Runs UNIX, doesn't crash!" This was for a reason to switch from Windows to Mac OS X. The wording for this was simply wrong. It created a false sense in customers that they were buying an impervious laptop or computer to crashes. Boy, did I have to deal with some really fun customers then that were taking it out on me because their system crashed due to whatever part went bad. They quoted that from the sign about it doesn't crash. And they always asked the same thing of what I was going to do for them. I guess that the more you paid for a computer made you more important as a customer than anyone else. So, take it as you want, but my days of ever wanting or supporting Apple are long since over. I am a very skilled technician and can fix most things, but when it comes to not being able to fix it myself to save some money, I can no longer stand behind a company like Apple. I will do the same for any company that will not let me fix the hardware I have purchased.

Just a quick comment: Samsung replaced my note 9 screen, replaced my battery and the entire casing for 250USD. A new note 9 was back when I had the issue, around 650-700$. I basically went there and they replaced everything that was used at just the price for repairing the screen. It was out of warranty. The comparable iPhone XS Max out of warranty price for just the screen is 329$. Add the battery, 69$. Rounding at 400$ just for those two things. The price for an XS Max back then was roughly 980$. So the direct competition doesn't come nearly as close to Apple price gouging.

Apple can't advocate for the user. It is only allowed to advocate for the shareholder. Such is the state of our (U.S.) laws surrounding publicly traded companies. If the user's needs and the shareholder's interests are in alignment, great! But when they do not align, Apple by law must favor the shareholder. Because of this, if a company considers the idea of lobbying the government for some control or whatever, and it is calculated that this lobbying would likely result in an increase in stock value, our law requires that they then perform this lobbying, or else face the potential for legal action. You can thank government regulation, and the Law of Unintended Consequences for that.

Right to Repair. It will not just benefit the Apple products, it will affect a lot more. Like the first company that pops in my mind is Tesla. Same things happen with them like with Apple. Also that will affect not just US citizens but world wide. Apple products are used everywhere. Lets not forget that they are not just for personal use. A lot of companies are using Apple products and people do break them, sometimes they do not, they are just badly designed. Like when you live in a colder climate and you take your Mac Air from work to home and at some point moisture accumulated and you are out of Functions buttons. Then as you stated they see the red dot and you are done. On the other hand just that is the reason that users are Not getting Apple products anymore. There is still choice and if users want it's in their hands. Companies will change with them. We here have a saying""He who eats all the food is not the guilty one, the guilty ones are those who let him eat it." It's not Apple's fault to not repair stuff, the users just do not care enough, so users let them.

At the 18:00 mark, a topic came up that needs to be clarified. Apple has 2 different licenses for 3rd party shops, authorised retailer and authorised service provider (AASP). You can be an AASP without being a retailer. Due to the insanely low margins on Apple retail products, the only way to really make money as a retailer is to push a metric ton of product, as this will net you a position in the higher retail tiers. To give you an idea, the lowest tier has a requirement of $100k sales per year in order to maintain your retail license. If you happen to be a shop in a small town, even this low tier can be a tough one to maintain. All for the privilege of a 2% markup. Another point that gets brought up much earlier in the video is that the cost of the repairs comes down to the cost of the labour for the repair, while parts are pretty cheap. This couldnt further from the truth. Apple has 2 price tiers for AASPs, stock price or replacement. Stock price is the cost of a part if you wish to enter in your stock. Replacement price is the cost of a part when it's tied to a repair, such as when you order a new top case for water damaged keyboard for a Macbook. Replacement parts typically require you to send back the damaged part. If you do not send the part back within the expected window, you will be stock price for the part. In some cases, such as main logic boards, stock price will be almost twice as much as replacement price. Regardless of the price differences, part prices are ridiculously high, some logic boards stock prices are as high as $1100, literally more than double their replacement cost. These prices truly reinforce that Apple's revenue model is based on getting clients to buy new rather than repair their devices, which I feel is unfortunate. The last three model years of Macbooks definitely do not have the same build quality as before, making 3-5 year old Macbooks much more desirable than the newer models, yet Apple is practically pricing their repairs out of the realm of possibility for most users, who would rather upgrade than repair their existing laptops.

In early Retina models, the plastic frame around the inner cells actually have threaded holes, and for a time that frame was held in with actual screws. That threw me off when the following years had batteries with rubber cushions over threaded screw holes. This tells me that the Retina was originally designed to have a removable battery not at all unlike the Air. And it's totally viable to have a battery made like that! But I think that some bean counter extraordinaire figured out that not only would gluing the battery result in extra repair costs of replacing the top case, but also reduce the final weight, and that was most important. Not that it's much more weighty than the A1278 with dual SSD's that can trounce the Retina in everything but computational horsepower, and even then not by much. And good on you, Louis, for not compromising standards for sake of convenience. When our phones aren't bouncing to the second line, we start getting nervous. Things are too quiet. Usually the rushes are several customers packed in with the phones that just won't shut up. I'm spoiled that there is enough buffer of the machine that keeps me away from that and I can focus on doing the repair properly. The "fast paced retail environment" doesn't affect my diagnosis one bit. If it's an IO board, that's what it is. If it's a logic board, you can pay to replace or wait for me to fix it. It is what it is, and standards must be upheld for proper diagnosis.

Those mistakes are not excusable. Those mistakes are made largely because the employees are not properly trained and would not be made if the employees were properly trained. They are not actually taught how to repair or diagnose machines. The procedure they were taught and told to use is faulty and there is no way that corporate is not aware it is faulty. So yes, the mistakes are not the fault of the employees because the employees cannot choose the training they receive. However training the employees is the task of the company employing the employees.

Ah yes. Have you hit your sales goals for the day/week/month/etc? I worked at Game Stop for two years. I'm familiar with the struggle. It's always a difficult balance of what the customer actually needs/wants vs your numbers. Especially at a place like an Apple Store where they don't have regulars in the same way that other retail stores do. I do wonder how much is deliberate vs how much is just really bad training. Is it just the Apple Care that they have to hit sales goals on? Cuz at Game Stop, you've got pre-orders, pre-owned, trade-ins, add-ons, memberships, etc that are tracked daily and you're supposed to try to get within a certain percentage for each of them on a weekly basis. And yes, I was coached several times for not making numbers goals.

Hello guys - and Apple fans and cultists, this is for you. You don't get to say "apple haters have never tried apple lol". Replace the word "Apple" with HP or Dell and you get the same idea. Macs don't deserve special treatment just because they run MacOS. At their core they are still PC laptops that run on the same components as a PC laptop would, with an Intel processor, a QWERTY keyboard, a trackpad, USB-A and C ports just like everyone else. Therefore, just like your average HP or Asus laptop, they deserve to be praised and judged the same way. Way too many of you guys are treating Macs like angels no matter how much shit Apple pulls out of their ass, while throwing shit at Dell, Lenovo and others when they make the same mistake. If you really want to run MacOS, there is the option of Hackintosh - you can't tell me software updates and slightly better stability can justify over double the price of a regular, decent Lenovo laptop with a core i5-8250U that sells for $500, upgrade it with a 512GB SSD, remove the hard drive, and add 4GB of RAM to have a $600 little laptop that will perform better than the shitty 512GB Macbook Air which sells for $1600 + taxes (and $2100 where I live). You need to stop throwing the "but but agagagag those who have never used apple will never understand agagagag" stuff - it's dumb and you know it's dumb. PC fanboys don't say "you've never used Asus so you don't understand". Have a beautiful day everyone :)

@Ane Calvo One: yes, Apple laptops are PCs too, which can run Windows and Linux alongside MacOS. However, the thing about the software is that there's way less available in the first place, and that user experience is a subjective thing which varies from person to person - I personally do not think Apple does a great job in this area. Two: Hackintosh is the best option for people wanting to use MacOS just because you save so much money. I'd believe backing up your data and refreshing your MacOS version every year is worth the trade-off, as the price difference between your average laptop with a 512GB SSD and 8GB of RAM ($600) and a MacBook Air with similar specs is over $1000 in the WORST case. And yes their keyboards are just pure garbage and the Genius Bar being this arrogant hurts their reputation

I have a 13 year old Lenovo that can still run XP/7/Ubuntu 11.04, sure the wifi card and the touchpad and the battery died, but the thing still works. I have HPs and Acers that are only 4-5 years old that have stopped functioning.

Sorry, I'm not with you... paying anymore than 20% of current device value to access repair materials is a non starter for me. Sure, it would work for you... a business, but that's just more regs in favor of business... ugh. I get that I'm the minority in wanting ability without trying to monetize it to enrich myself, but that just means I'm not really a danger to shops or manufacturers. I make just above a living wage, I can't afford to replace all my gadgets whenever they leave warranty coverage. I've been able to save many devices when information is freely (or cheaply) available. My experience last night: I have a surround sound receiver that gives an error code, sweet! Shit... the repair manual is locked behind a $20 paywall by someone who probably doesn't even own the rights to it. Information needs to be freely available, if not actually free.

Insurance is only really more valuable than it's worth if you need to use it but it is cheaper than repairing the phone. For example for my phone, insurance is $190 but paid throughout 18 months. If I need to use it to repair my phone screen, I need to pay a deductible of $90. So far my total is $280. If I didn't have insurance, the repair would be $300. Save roughly $20. If you need to use it again, you will have a better deal overall. If you never need to use it, you're out $180. It's never just $79. Besides insurance for phones are going up along with phone prices.

@@dr.strange5419 If you had a phone that didn't require you to repair directly through them, it would be significantly cheaper. I cracked my Essential PH-1's screen and found an OEM replacement screen online on Amazon or eBay for around $50 and the seller included tools and adhesive to help me replace the screen! Took me all of like 20 minutes or so to replace the screen. The Essential phone is just as gorgeous to look at as any iPhone (I would say more so) and yet it costs a fraction of the cost for repairs and this phone is claimed to be difficult or impossible to repair as far as android devices go!
@dr.strange5419
@dr.strange5419 5 жыл бұрын
@@kingzach74 Sort of, the Essential phone is not water resistant. The more expensive phones are more complicated to repair because of the adhesives used for the water resistant IP rating. You can self repair them still, but chances of you compromising the water resistance of the phone is very high. I have the Pixel 3 and the repair shop Google recommends will be sent with the parts and the adhesive required to keep the phone water resistant. Besides, the expensive side of a repair is not necessarily the labor anymore, it is the parts for the phone. Look up the prices of phone screens (front or back) for flagship phones and you will find they are between $250-$700.

The main way to get a store front in NYC for the average small business owner today is to inherit it from a family member who started a business down there back when it was affordable. Taking those businesses away during covid most likely removes the ability for a lot of small business to access a location in NYC. So until the Ponzy scheme like NYC realestate market comes crashing down, NYC is for big businesses only.

i had been in the retail/support side of the computer business for over 30 yrs. my major beef with them are on three points: 1. their staff at the Apple store is VERY poorly trained. A lot of them are green behind their ears and the only thing they know how to do is to recite what Apple told them. for what you pay, your staff should be well trained and be able to think on their head. for a lot of folks, their iphone/ipad is their only computer and have a lot of precious memory/important data on there, having staff with minimal training working on it is unacceptable. 2. be practical with their products, don't design products that are practical. don't have the mantra of thinner is better. a lot of their design problems originated from this mantra. 3. pls open up your support to 3rd parties. i mean genuinely open it up, don't control your parts with so tight fist that 3rd party repairer can fix things. i had talked to apple certified repairer that told me they can't help me because a part is not available.

One of the biggest problems with how Apple is conducting itself, is that it not only works...its also paving a pathway forward for other manufacturers and software developers. If Apple does something and it sticks, everyone else follows. This can be seen with the headphone jack and sealed phone designs. Its a big problem allowing them to become that big and influential. Worse still is US corrupt politics standing back and letting this happen for “their cut”. Sometimes massive corporations like Google, Microsoft and Apple need to be kept in check.

"They ruin education, they ruin healthcare, they ruin retirement" I love you Louis but boy do you need to do some research on this stuff. The reason the US healthcare system sucks so much is precisely how much it relies on the market instead of government - the best healthcare systems in the world all have heavy government involvement. The most efficient healthcare insurance in the US is medicare, even though it only deals with the elderly which means it has the highest risk pool of any insurance as well. The same is basically true of education, and government involvement is additionally all that stops scam universities and diploma mills (which are on the rise at the moment btw). Social security, which is basically government-provided retirement, has lifted absolutely vast amounts of retirees out of poverty. I'm not sure I'd call that "ruining retirement".
