Apple’s iPhone 14 Event “Surprised” Me

Күн бұрын

Apple wrapped up their annual September Event yesterday. At long last, the 6.1” iPhone 14 gained a bigger sibling, the 6.7” iPhone 14 Plus. Leaks surrounding the pro phones were validated, but only from a hardware standpoint. The software-as many postulated-was a far cry from a simple “dot-and-pill” that had been rumored. The “dynamic island” (l-o-frickin’-l) cleverly places UI elements around the floating “notch” with amazingly elastic animations to boot. The Watch Series 8 had a fairly boring year, but some women may benefit from improved ovulation tracking for better family planning. The Apple Watch SE 2 brought a new processor and lower price to the entry-level model, and the titanium Series Watch disappeared in favor of the new Apple Watch Ultra. The Watch Ultra packs a bunch of adventure-focused hardware and software features like a dive sensor, siren, dual speakers, three microphone array, a larger 49mm display wrapped in sapphire, a huge crown with surrounding crown guard, a new Action Button, and a whole lot more. We’ll talk about everything-from crash detection, to dive features, to the new health sensor, and more. Concerning the iPhone, we’ll talk about our happy surprises and cautious… optimism? Don’t miss this one! Oh, and let us take a bit of a victory lap concerning the AirPods Pro 2 rumors we were skeptical of!

8:18 I've literally been checking my heart rate zones, stride length, vertical oscillation and GCT both during and post workout for a few months now on my Apple Watch Series 7 with the stock workout app in addition to the Fitness app on my iPhone. It's tied to watchOS 9, NOT Apple Watch Ultra. This was announced during WWDC in June this year.

You‘re missing one change with the SE: nylon back. This might do the trick for me since I had contact issues on my skin with previous Apple Watches where the case (around the sensors) might get contact to the skin.
@TheAfroman
@TheAfroman Жыл бұрын
This is true. When I was at Apple I helped field and capture all sorts of safety issues like this. Skin irritations from materials was one of them. Dyes in specific color bands, metal allergies. Trust me there is a whole department at Apple for that.

@TheAfroman
@TheAfroman Жыл бұрын
@@richeyrich2203 yeah some people have issues with metals reacting to longer exposure to skin contact. You are fine at first. The heat and sweat. Cooling and heat changes will make you react bad. Also look up the case. It also contains nickel in the alloy and anodization process. And Nickel allergies are definitely higher than you think.
@JanStraube
@JanStraube Жыл бұрын
@@richeyrich2203 I am not sure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@MatejaMaric
@MatejaMaric Жыл бұрын
That’s partially why Series 4 and later Apple Watches switched to using an all-ceramic and sapphire crystal back, to eliminate all metal-on-skin contact and possible allergic reactions. Maybe you had an earlier model (Series 0-3) which still used metal on the back? Also, stainless steel and titanium models exist. Maybe those would be better for you? The other reason for the switch is that, unlike metal, ceramic is radio-transparent, which helps with Bluetooth and cellular reception.

I see absolutely no reason for your everyday smartwatch to also need to double as a dive computer... When you're bringing so much gear to a dive already, renting a computer (or buying your own for 200-300 bucks if you dive often enough) that will remain absolutely usable for a decade is clearly the better option. Not to mention the laughable battery life... I'm not some crazy outdoor explorer, but all the multi day hikes I've been on would require me to take a power bank to keep my "explorer" watch charged. And power banks perform very poorly in cold weather, making them a hassle to deal with + unnecessary extra weight. Getting one of the cheaper models and staying on the 2-3 year upgrade cycle, and buying one dive computer that you use for 10 years seems like the obvious choice. If you need a watch for multi day hikes, the battery life is insufficient and you should get a watch from a competing brand like Garmin. The "outdoor" features of this watch seem like pure aesthetic, including the alarm function... JUST TAKE A WHISTLE, IT WON'T RUN OUT OF BATTERY! The only actually game changing outdoors feature in my opinion is the satellite functionality in the iPhone 14, since very few people actually buy the 300 dollar satellite trackers + subscription when they go on hikes.

There are literally MILLIONS of people that have been waiting for a larger and bulkier Apple watch. Would it sell better at $499? Yes. Do some of those people wish it were made of heavier stainless steel? Absolutely. But the Ultra is going to sell like a raging wildfire ripping through California and is going to make a large impact on Apple Watch bottom-line over the next 12 months.

There is always things they can do without resorting to gimmicks mate , for a start they could add a 3.5 mm mic/headphone Jack, or shock horror an SD card , they could rebuild some value back into the handsets by supplying us with an updated fast charger brick like some of the Chinese phones do , maybe even throw in a cheap rubbery case instead of charging us $50 or 75 bucks for one . Maybe even keep the SIM card and just give the option to use either the card or the sim …….. instead of taking yet another feature away.

Have to go see the new watches in person, but I don’t think think I’d go with the Ultra. I hike occasionally, so the battery life seems quite nice. But the size. :/ The more bulky the watch, the easier it’s to accidentally hit and scrape stuff with it. Also it’ll be more uncomfortable under a sleeve. I have series 1 so an upgrade would be nice, I think I’ll go with series 7 on a discount if there’s no noticeable battery life difference between normal 8. New iPhone definitely, iPhone 7 to 14 Pro Max. That’s a decent upgrade in all aspects except weight and pocketability.. :)

0:17 I would actually LOVE actual EarPods Pro’s. Advertising the use of lossless streaming in Apple Music, they could make something like a very beefy in ear style headphone like the AirPods Pro, but with a cable, great dac, generally something very audiofile oriented.

Long lasting it’s not 36 hours. The Garmin watches that the Ultra’s competing with last a minimum of 1 week to more than 3 weeks. And also, not having offline maps and proper navigation is not good.

I agree, typically apple keeps their design changes for 4-5 years. Look at the iPhone X. They kept the notch but made small improvements to it. Apple will probably do the same thing with the dynamic island, especially since how much of the UI/ software revolves around the dynamic island now.

"Apple is basically saying that if you don't have a watch you'll die." Theier logic is that the watch isn't something you need to grab, it's just strapped to your wrist. With that, I agree. The "Apple Watch saved my life thing was weird". I physically cringed when the one person said: "The doctor said: 'Your watch saved your life.'" Like, BS the doctor would say that.

A Garmin watch can last for weeks. (Mine easily does 3 weeks on a single charge). Not sure the comparison here with the Apple Watch Ultra is fair. The Apple Watch is still a smart watch first, explorer companion second.

I mean arguably it’s kind of fair. It can now do more things the Garmin can, but also it does all the great things an Apple Watch can do. And it’s cheaper than many Garmins. It’s not for the hardest core people, but the intense runner who doesn’t need days of battery life, or similar athletes, it will be great.

People are seriously sleeping on the precision dual-frequency GPS, up to 36 hours of battery life of the Apple Watch Ultra and Emergency SOS via Satellite. Which means no need for a Garmin. As someone who hikes a ton this is HUGE.

The new ear Analysis feature is already available and had been for a while now in the betas. At least it had for me. I set it to back in July. It’s cool but a little finicky to set up cause it needs specific angles if the side of your head, so you can’t see the instructions it’s giving you. Took me a lot of moving my phone around near my ear before it finally was satisfied.

Thanks for the video! Just a note, from my experience, the lug-to-lug dimension is not measured diagonally like a diameter, rather it's measured vertically as the overall height of the watch from one lug to the other lug on the same side. Think of Diameter as width, and lug-to-lug as height (and thickness as thickness). Stay Snazzy!

I watched the event yesterday and was not sure of what the improvements were. Thanks for doing this. I am super excited to see the bigger watch as the apple watch always seems a little too small for me. I have to add that I hate the touch controls on the airpods and other ear buds, they consistently turn my music off or push to the next track when I am adjusting them. I am constantly looking for a way to turn that off. I am a fan of the deep purple as well, so time will tell. Thanks for the hard work on this.

What i would have been hoping for is a mic update on the AirPods Pro. Trying to phone on a bike is for me on the bike a dream, but im not understandable on the other end, which makes the function useless to me… But they dont talk about the mic at all, so i assume it is staying the same, which wouldnt convince me of an update.

Great video Quinn. You know what's crazy, think about how great 3d touch would have been on this new phone with the 'dynamic island.' Finally Apple built a software feature that would cause people to actually use 3d touch (which I happened to use, though most obviously did not). Now we have to long press on the paradise island instead of just force pressing it, which would have been fantastic.

I'm kinda tempted by the Ultra. I love big watches and this makes an already pretty good watch even betterer 🙂 I had pre-ordered BUT I'm going to go instore first to check it out "in the flesh". The iP14PM was kind've m'eh for me so I'll stick with the 12PM for another year. Good analysis of the event/devices buddy.

I'm in the same boat, but also jumping on the 14PM. 2 years is the sweet spot for phone upgrades and holding onto the 12PM another year will significantly erode its resale value.
