this event basically killed the iPad. you now need a chart to decide which keyboard and pencil you need to get for your iPad… it’s so dumb. i miss the days of like 3 iPads and one apple pencil

There are millions of people like me who just need a fking iPad mini with OLED display to watch media on the go. A device that is portable enough to carry around, light enough to hold for long hours and an amazing display to watch Netflix. Phones are too small for watching videos, the mini is just perfect. Why is Apple not catering to this category?

The iPad Pro 2018 is like the GTX 1080 ti. It was just too good and set the bar too high.

It's crazy how Apple's extremely clean product family became so bloated. Multiple generations of iPads in multiple overlapping product lines with a random set of processors mixed and matched between generations, 4 Apple Pencils and even the MacBook has a bunch of hidden spec variation depending on what version you get. Having to spend time double checking whether different CURRENTLY SOLD products are compatible with each other goes wildly against Apple's "it just works" philosophy. The iPad is a wasted product line that's held back by its OS, the A12z from 2018's is _still_ overpowered for everything the device can do. I hope someone makes a competent tablet soon because Apple has gotten incredibly lazy with theirs.

I think making the old pencil/keyboard incompatible with the new ipads has more to do with preventing new ipad owners from buying used peripherals

For reference, on the European market the bigger iPad Pro full spec with pencil and keyboard costs 3600€ . With that price, I can literally buy a used car.

Either next iPad OS is completely revolutionary or you are better off with a Macbook Air.

About the Apple Pencil compatibility: it is probably due to the new landscape camera layout and they have to change the magnets/charging mechanism.

People wanted the FaceID in the landscape orientation, this meant that the charging coil design for the apple pencil had to change, hence why the old pencil doesn't work with the new iPads and the new pencil doesn't work with the old iPads. I would say they technically could work with the screen but since there's no way to charge and therefore pair the pencil on the iPad, they just decided it was easier to say it doesn't work.

You could get a nice spac’ed MacBook Pro for that iPad. The lower price 10th gen was more exciting.

I actually just sold my iPad Pro M2 for a refurbished M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 in and have 0 regrets. Don't get me wrong, I loved my iPad, but man it just felt so restricted with iPad os. I won't going back to an iPad anytime soon.

The dumbest thing about the iPad Air? It is now heavier than the iPad Pro. The entire point of the Air was that it was lighter and slimmer than the regular iPad. Now it is heavier and thicker. Oh, and it also has a two year old CPU.

8GB of Ram for a $1300 13inch iPad with a binned M4, and $1900 just to be able to get 16GB and 1TB of storage that no iPad users need, all without including the price of the pencil and the keyboard; brilliant Apple, absolutely amazing.

iPad Air got the best upgrades. The base is now 128GB, which is actually usable. Before it was a crippling 64GB, which meant almost everyone needed to pay for the upgrade. So it's probably cheaper for most people. You get the M2 chip, which is more power than 99.5% of us can actually make use of on a tablet OS. And now there is the 13" model so artists, students and musicians can have some screen area at a reasonable price.

Personally, I was offended how the iPad mini was treated like a stepchild. It always has been treated as such, but today it was evident they don’t care about that mighty little device. It’s evident they are killing iPad mini by making the iPad 10th gen $200 cheaper than the mini. It’s so unfortunate. The iPad mini is the truest definition of what a tablet should be.

What can you even do with an M4 in an iPad? The OS is still a limitation with an M1.

Giving up on iPad Pro. I sold my 12.9” M1 and am just keeping the Mini. Tired of the OS holding the hardware back. As soon as the announcement ended, I ordered the Minisforum V3 which runs full Windows 11 with 32Gb of RAM and a 1Tb SSD for $1199. All I want from the iPad Pro is the ability to dual boot into MacOS.

Oh good I thought I was the only one that was underwhelmed. All the other tech KZfaqrs are just drooling for some reason. It’s nice that we got OLED, but what do we need a M4 for? It’s the same chassis except extra thins. That way there’s more chance to bend it, the bezels didn’t get any smaller and the price got larger so why is everybody so hyped?

Remember this comment when these start bending by the thousands because they sacrificed structural rigidity for thinness.

Hmmm. WWDC really needs to bring a big update to iPadOS to take advantage of this hardware. All these improvements over the M1 seem weak to me where it’s hard to unlock the power.

Memo to Apple marketing. Sometimes it's a fine line between opportunistic and evil. You have crossed into evil territory with the now current Apple pencil lineup. Also, When a product line starts to look this cluttered and confused, you are doing it wrong.

The iPad is like driving a Ferrari in stop and go traffic. If it had an actual operating system it would be like taking it to the track.

The magnets and charge points in the new pencil are in a different place than the apple pencil 2. Moving the camera to the side is the reason you can't use the apple pencil 2.

Should I upgrade my 2017 ipad pro? Literally none of the new ones is comparable. Just for media watching the 2017 ipad pro has 120hz screen compared to the new air with only 60😢. This is insane.

Luke i think the reason why the new apple pencil pro is only compatible with the new ipads is because the the magnetic docking and charging strip on the old appple pencil is perfectly aligned to the centre of the ipads side. Where the new cameras are placed for the ipad pro/air. This is probably the reason they said that only the Apple pencil pro and the usb-c apple pencil are compatible with the new ipads. And the same reason why the 10th gen ipad was incompatible with the second gen apple pencil even though it got the redesign. The magstrip interferes when placing thr cameras in a horizontal orientation

I need help in making a decision on which macbook to get, the first option is a 2019 16inch with an intel i9, 4tb storage, 64gb ram and an 8gb Radeon 5500 graphics card. The second option is an m1 with 16gb of ram and 512 ssd.

I'm Really glad Luke mentioned the artists and creators in this video since a lot of other tech youtubers shrug the updates off as "Lame/pointless" But for those of us who use Procreate/dreams + So many other creative apps the M4 and new pencil features are enough for someone like myself to upgrade from another Pro as soon as the reviews come out regardless of the software. Working on huge art projects at a high res really makes even the current pro chug and third party Desktop drawing displays just don't feel great to use. Super happy about these!

I think the Apple Pencil issue is that they and to change the magnets because of the landscape camera. I agree its unfortunate though - I’ll stick with my iPad mini 6

It's not that the upgrades are mid. It's the price that is outrageous and the value proposition is completely wrong.

I use my iPad pro 2018 every single day but have no interest in upgrading until Apple "unchains" iPadOS. As powerful as these new machines are, they don't do anything more for me than my 2018 model.

As for somebody who only uses it for Procreate I was SERIOUSLY underwhelmed. Hell, even the new pencil isn't backwards compatible with my "ancient" M1 iPad Pro. I watched the whole presentation, and what a SERIOUS yawn fest!!

What was the last time one of us thought the iPad was too thick to handle :(

Not sure if this has already been said…. Wasn’t the main reason they did not move the front facing camera on the last model IPad Pro because of the magnets used to attach the Apple Pencil two, and now with the new iPad Pro, they have in fact redesigned the magnet connection/ charging for the Apple Pencil Pro so the front facing camera could be moved to the landscape location? This would be a reason that the Apple Pencil two is not compatible with the new iPad Pro. The magnets and charger for the Apple Pencil Pro must not line up or work properly with the Apple Pencil two. Just a thought.

The reason for the iPad Pro to exist for the masses is so that people can say they own an iPad Pro. Then proceed to use it to watch KZfaq and Netflix, read the odd email and play Candy Crush.

Apple has lost its soul with these online keynotes! They should bring back the folks that actually worked on these products and put them on a stage and let them geek out a bit like they used to

Unless I missed it. Does the new pencil attach to the iPad with magnets like before? I cannot justify buying it due to the Os. For me, the ability to have a full version of Photoshop is a must.

i ordered the 13” Pro with 1 TB, wi-if+cellular immediately. The hardware is incredibly impressive and I find good value even with the current iPadOS. I use the iPad as a mobile counterpart to my overly equipped desktop Mac. I also use the iPad as my primary media consumption device. This new screen will make that far more enjoyable. I believe WWDC will bring exciting enhancements to iPadOS that will benefit from the M4 chip. If not, there’s always next year as the M4 will still be current.

I’m disabled, I’m reinventing myself with 3D Modeling, I do everything on the iPad because I am not forced to be limited to a desk. I have a 2018 iPad Pro and it has been a game changer. Some of the software is running slow. This will up my productivity and my freedom to work anywhere.

Hey Luke - The reason for the Pencil issues is the Landscape camera. They had to change the charging and magnets.

I have been using the ipad pro 2018 with the magic keyboard and pencil 2. It has started to slow down on some heavy duty tasks. I was sure I’m gonna upgrade to the M4 pro but I hate the fact that I’ll have to get a new keyboard and a pencil. I don’t want to sell them at a throwaway price so was thinking I’ll get the M2 air(i know pencil won’t work). But then I realised that m2 air doesn’t have pro motion. So does it make sense to get an m2 pro at a discount. If my 2018 ipad pro works decently, I’m sure 2022 m2 pro would still be a beast… and my Magic Keyboard and apple pencil would still be useful…

I don’t get why the tabboard is need on the Magic Keyboard 2? I haven’t felt like it was needed, since you can just tab on the iPad screen?

The thing is, those who are professional will mostly be looking at the MacBook Pro’s for their power and full array of desktop apps. It’s all good having an iPad with M4. But that doesn’t mean using Z-Brush is going to be any less clunky with iPadOS capabilities, photoshop is still missing a load of features that the desktop/mac versions have and gaming really isn’t an issue. Mirage will still play at 30fps, Genshin will still be the benchmark which kills your iPad in 1.5 hours and things like procreate will still be absolutely amazing on every iPad with the new 11/12.9 inch design. (Might I add without the need to buy a brand new Apple Pencil) The iPad Air 13” is coming too late, but is arguably the real star of the show, it will mean the biggest demographic of iPad users (students and casual users) can have a 12.9/13” iPad without needing to pay for power they will literally never use, until recently I worked in an Apple Store here in the UK, and out of the hundreds of iPads I sold each year only about 5% were for pro users looking for the best and most powerful. Most people I met looking for an iPad were either students or older people who only went for the pro because it had a large screen for ease of use/procreate and note taking, not for the power inside. The iPad Pro will never be pro without a major overhaul of IPadOS, unfortunately that won’t happen because then it will be a direct competitor for the Mac lineup and Apple want them to be two distinctive devices. Hardware wise with the new aluminium Magic Keyboard and 13” inch size, the Pro is just a touchscreen 13” MacBook with less battery life and without MacOS or a calculator, while also somehow being more expensive…

The question is... why would you buy a new iPad Air over the 5th gen? It's $100 cheaper right now on Amazon, and you're only missing WiFi 6E, "new" colors, a *slightly* faster M2 chip, 128GB, and the landscape camera. I feel like those are all very small updates that aren't worth the money.

They had to reposition the magnets because of the landscape camera position, which is probably why they had to create a whole new pencil.

So I waited for the Event, I hope fore some discounts for older models. 😀 I agree the comparison m2 to M4 makes it very difficult to guess the real impact. I am not disappointed, because I stopped expecting too much. I am not sure this is a good sign for apple. 🤷‍♂️

Agree with 100%.. I was waiting for this event, still using an A12z iPad Pro 11" and can't find a reason to upgrade. And honestly, the more time goes by, the less I use my iPad, really thinking of getting rid of it and just save the money to get the M4 Pro Mac when it'll be available (upgrading my M1 Pro 16").

Apple’s ’upgrades’ are getting more and more minute and elusive. Squint and you’ll miss how exactly these machines are supposed to be better. Disappointing.

You could also flip your argument and say that it’s really cool that the non-pro iPads get all the features a non-pro person would want without having to upgrade higher. You could argue the screen tech is better but 99% of non-pro people don’t care.

Why doesn’t Apple allow Mac OS to be used on the iPad? This would significantly improve the benefits.

apple pencil usb c is compatible with new devices and magic keyboard is compatible to air m2 so the one that using ipad air and upgrading to the new air dont need to buy anything if they already have it and in same price air is now 128 gb and air have similar chip to last pro and they can buy 13 inch without going pro , for 90% users this is fantastic

I have the iPad Air 2nd gen that I bought 9 years ago. Still works great for most things. In '22 I bought the 5th gen iPad Air & still love it. Plenty fast enough for me. Other than a few apps, I mainly use them for media consumption. When the iPad Pro first came out, I reaaaaly wanted it -- but after nearly a decade of using an iPad, I'm glad I didn't. As you say, the "Pro" models aren't meant for me. Anything artistic I want to do, I use my desktops for. If I was going to spend that much, I'd just get a new M4 Mini (when and if they ever come out with it.)

Apple did actually say the M3's CPU is 20% faster than the M2's CPU during the October 30 keynote If M4 achieved 1.5x the M2's performance, and M3 achieved 1.2x the M2's performance, than if both statements by Apple are correct, and line up perfectly, we get a 25% performance jump going from the M3 to M4

I think that Apple locking the new Apple Pencil Pro with the new iPad has to do something with the way it’s charged. As the new front Camera orientation on the iPad I feel like Apple may have moved the Charging coils of the new Pencil and the iPad which may have been a factor of the new Pencil not being compatible with the older generation and the new iPad not being compatible with the Apple Pencil 2.

Honest question though, why is it a bad thing that you don’t feel like this product is for you if you are not an artist? Isn’t that great? That means you could easily justify not upgrading or going with a cheaper model like the iPad Air

@Luke Miani The new ipads have a different apple pencil charging system, because of the landscape camera the wireless charging coils had to be redesigned, hence the compatibility issue.

Still rocking my original first gen iPad Pro I picked up in 2016. Still does everything I need it to. I will probably use it until security updates stop coming out.

The actual reason (if any of you are wondering) is that with the camera moving to landscape, they had to change the magnet design. So the pencil attaches differently

If you are buying the magic keyboard you should buy a laptop instead. The entire point of the iPad is that it has a magic screen that you can interact with as if it was programmable paper. If you are going to connect it to a laptop keyboard, so that the screen is now hard to write on, hard to touch and has hardly any point. If you have terrible chicken scratch then buy a cheap logitech that you can put *next* to the iPad and use it in a way that doesn't block you from fully accessing the iPad screen.

I just priced out a 1 TB 13" iPad Pro (wifi) w/MKB and it was $150 less than my 14" Pro MBP with the 12/18/18/1 TB configuration. All of a sudden my MacBook seems like a great value.

You know what's the most disappointing? The fact that the Apple Pencil Pro isn't supported on the iPad Pro M2s! i eld off buying the 2nd Gen Pencil for so long, only to get a bummer. The morons aren't reducing the price of the outdated Pencil too smh.

I wonder what the performance difference would be for 512 vs. 1 or 2tb. I have 4th gen IPP in 1tb and barely made a dent.

I was afraid about my purchasing the iPad Pro M2, 12.9” for Christmas with new iPads coming out soon. The only feature I’d upgrade for is if it could run native Apple silicon apps, or had full MacOS compatibility. I have yet to really max out my iPad, running Logic for iPad, tons of plugins and instruments, massive track counts at a very low 64 buffer size.

And I can't wait for the bend test on the larger iPad pro

in apple's defense, i don't think theres any way they _could_ have made the 2nd gen pencil compatible with the new pros and airs due to the new camera orientation. the camera being there means they probably had to completely redesign the connectors to get around it same applies to the new pencil not being compatible with the old ipads, the new connectors on the pencil to match the new ipads probably just isn't compatible with the old designs

I bought a 12.9 inch WiFi pro with gen 3 Apple Pencil and my use cases are: external remote camera monitor, on-the-go color grading in DaVinci resolve, creating mood boards, shot breakdowns and story boards, 2nd monitor for MacBook or the Mac mini. Multimedia wise I enjoy watching you tube content more than on my MacBook - aspect ratio of iPad screen looks more right to me, but it’s a subjective feeling. When it comes to intense editing, sadly, iPad Pro falls short and begins to stutter all too quickly with RAW 4K and 6K clips. Pro Res goes better, but Davinci’s optimisation has yet to improve for ipad for it to become a viable editing machine especially for close to 2000$ for a base one now, would love to see S log or BRAW clips but no high hopes - for quick and easy edits it’s good though. 😉

As a non-iPad owner I’m still excited to see that tandem OLED tech because I think that’ll be coming to the MBP at some point 😊

This iPad Pro is just as thin as its sales figures are going to be. In Germany the 13 inch iPad Pro starts at 1550€ (1668$) - Where do they get the idea that people will pay so much money for a tablet, when at the same time their iPhone sales are a falling across the globe, because their new phones are to expensive and the old ones are too good to be replaced (and that effect is even more obvious with their iPad line up)
