On this beautiful day, our "sightseeing" approach started near the city of Las Palmas. Then we had to fly over the airport to enter a right hand downwind leg for landing. Due to the traffic situation, we had to fly a wide approach pattern. Even with the wide pattern, the required distance and the flighttime was still shorter than a standard instrument approach.
Runway 03L is 3100 meters long and 45 meters wide. Thje parallel runway 03R has the same dimensions. Usually runway 03L is used for landings and runway 03R is used mostly for departures. Due to the close proxmity of both runways, no parallel approaches are possible. Runway 03R is also the main runway for the military Gando airbase, which is located on the east side of the airport property.
Gran Canaria Airport was also one of the official emergency alternate airports for the NASA Space Shuttle.
