Boothy gets the golden ticket to ride Aprilia's all-new RS 660 in Italy. Does the Noale factory's new middleweight live up to the hype?

The bullshit suspension that comes on the factory version isn’t good enough for Racing either. Making it a race bike, like I would, I’d be totally changing out the suspension anyway, so it doesn’t really matter to me. The factory version might have larger diameter stanchions which could be helpful. But I would need to put fort kit and have it revolves in Sprong either way. I fell into the trap of thinking that the R version of the triumph Daytona 675 was ready to race. It’s actually not the real OinsTTX shick on that bike. It’s some mid-level bullshitnot made in Sweden that you have to totally redo. Same with the “onlins” on the Panigales.

I'm british from sheffield but I live in Switzerland so I know the score he was doing 164kph and an 80 zone next to a small village with elderly and kids walking around. It was reduced to 156kph had it been 160kph or above he would have gone to jail. Btw if you saw how many tourist bikers are killed here weekly due to speed you wouldn't argue and since part of my summer job is collecting things of killed tourists and helping explain to families there family member is dead and the reason is speeding you wouldn't be saying much on that either. Average 1 tourist every 3 days and 1 brit every 11 days. I've got video of people being killed going over the edge and head on into other bikers. I'm no angel but I dont complain when I'm caught as I was last year. Its means tested richer you are bigger the fine. More expensive the vehicle bigger the fine. THIS, its basically a full fairing street bike and not a sport bike. A bike for carving corners and country roads. Roads that can sometimes be rough or slippery, where you need a TC and ABS and all the electronic bits and bobs.
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, although there is the price difference of 2000 pounds.. But in spirit, they are targeting the same segment. The Aprilia is sportier with almost 30kg lower wet weight, whereas the Ducati has higher oomph from its larger engine. Seeing the RS660 as a supersport before a street bike is the biggest mistake most reviewers are making. The bike was designed for the road first and foremost, and then mated to a lightweight sporty package - whereas supersports bikes are deisgned for the track first, and then homologated for street use. As such, the Aprilia is great in city and urban riding as well as on twisty backroads, it doesn't need much space to open its legs unlike supersports bikes. One look at the rider triangle with slightly lower foot pegs, more ergonomic raised handlebars, this is closer to being a modern-day version of Honda's old CBR 600 F4i, than a current day 600RR. And it has a fuel guage, man how long I've wanted to see that sort of basic tech find its way to sporty street bikes.
3 жыл бұрын
Ducati Supersport was surprisingly soft and the engine was pretty underpowered. I hopped on a Supersport right after a 954 Blade and the "v-twin low end grunt" was completely missing. Also the brakes were soft and the suspension totally mismatched. Hopefully the RS660 will easily beat the Supersport.
@Whos-That-Guy
@Whos-That-Guy 3 жыл бұрын
@ interesting. Did you ride the S version of the duc ss? Most reviewers love the low end grunt of the duc ss. Wrong power mode possibly? 100nm of torq should be more than entertaining. I know the z900 is plenty of power for the road and it has similar power to the duc ss.
@bocolis88
@bocolis88 3 жыл бұрын
@ I’ve ridden the Supersport S model with the Ohlins suspension and it was perfect. The Brembo brakes were fine without the initial bite you get from more up to date Brembo, but I seriously doubt that Aprilia’s brakes will be better. As long as the power goes if 113hp felt underpowered you’re gonna be seriously disappointed. To me the RS 660 is a lighter cheaper Supersport

Dark blue wheels is where it's at. This used to be Aprilia's signature color for their sports wheels - if you look back at the old RSV 1000. I had an Aprilia Pegaso Strada from 2008, with a lovely warm gold-flaked yellow body color and these dark blue sports wheels. One of the best color combinations I've seen on a bike. They have to bring this back with the RS660

In the aprillia promo video, I thought the yellow looked gorgeous, but when I saw it in this video, it was a bit tacky. Those orange rims has to go and the bike needs more black bits (or stickers) to reduce those yellow and add some contrast. As of now, it looks bodywork it half done and they hurried the bike out.

To me, this bike is exactly how a modern sportbike should be, and it ticks all the boxes: Around 100 bhp + a fat dose of low down torque, which is more than enough for legal, every day, real world speeds, even when you're riding with a passenger and luggage. Fully faired and slightly upright so that I can commute and tour on it all year round without hating my life, but can also push it on the twisties and at the track when I want to. Quality components and none of that cheap Japanese sh*t like conventional, no-name forks or non-radially mounted crappy brakes that just can't cope with the engine. Decent electronics so that they don't interfere with your riding, but are definitely there when you mess up or when the road is slippery. Overall, so, so nice! My only problems with this bike are the relatively small tank, and of course the high price. I think it's easily about 1000 bucks overpriced, and I'm not sure about Aprilia reliability and servicing. I mean even though I live in a large city in Europe, I still don't have ANY Aprilia dealerships close by - do you?! Also, for that money, what is stopping me from buying a bulletproof Honda CBR650R, upgrading the hell out of it AND buying new gear WHILE having pretty much the same amount of fun on the road without any of the worries that I would have with the Aprilia? That being said, I think this is still a great fun bike, and more importantly, finally, it's a big step in the right direction: BUILD MORE AFFORDABLE, MIDWEIGHT, FULLY FAIRED, SPORTY BIKES so that we can commute, tour, track, and canyon blast on them without breaking the bank, killing ourselves, and/or suffering due to discomfort and wind resistance. That's why I think bikes like this as well as the Ducati SuperSport, Honda CBR650R, and the Ninja 650, are really where it's at for the average and sensible rider.

Yeah aprilia dealerships are scarce all over the world... You're more likely to find Aprilias in those scooter/moped dealerships (rs50 etc...) than in big cc's ones.... Also... how about making the Shiver a seller in the first place ? (this model will probably be deleted with the arrival of the Tuono 660).
@Allenamenwarenschonweg

I live in Austria and we have quite a good dealership network for Aprilias. They are usually reliable bikes, if you dont buy the first generation of any of their models. But regarding the price i totally agree - the RS660 is just too expensive for what is being offered compared to for example a Street Triple or a ZX6R.

Some of the best riders I have known have died riding on public roads. "You're a long way from getting your knee down love." I was watching the hips drop and point opposite of the head and the knee coming out into RACE MODEEEEE. Thankfully 3 seconds later you're stopped and no longer behind Street Rossi holding you up. I've a 2010 RSV4 that I'm in love with but find that no matter how much you try to make track days regularly, it is never as much as you'd like, and I'd like the same bike but a bit more comfortable. That points to a TV4 1100 but again being realistic and not a dreamer, I think 100hp and all the electronics make this the perfect street bike for someone who wants a "sport bike" that is ridden most of the time in a half or 3/4 tuck versus chin slammed to the tank. Deposit has been made, and in that lovely Vomit Gold. Awesome video as always, I passed all the other reviews of this bike to get the real 44Toofs opinion.

Years later after a few bikes I got the RSV4, smooth and great bike except for the hot starting, or lack of starting when hot, problem. So the dealer could never quite fix it, so I sold it. With Aprilia that’s what annoys me, they need to take time to finish it...get the clutch to work without having to bleed it every 500 miles, get the rear brake to work on a consistent basis, stop using plastic fuel tanks and solve the hot start problem (it’s related to the EVAP system).

It's about +33hp and -10kg weight, with a 2k higher redline, and a generally much sportier package, as well as the entire electronics package (although I personally don't care much for that part). Also price listing for a new Ninja 650 base model is around 7000 GBP, and the Aprilia is around 10k GBP. If you add suspension upgrades, tune, and lightening upgrades, you are very close to a comparable price within 1.5k GBP even without an exhaust, and at that point the Aprilia is still more powerful, lighter, has far superior electronics, and the better rider triangle if sporty riding is what you're after (I assume this since you are listing performance mods with weight saving and tune etc). Fair enough that you have no reason to get it over the Ninja 650, but at least use proper specs and prices..

@@rlsedition yes that’s what engineering management has been telling accounting since they front-loaded the program with excess design and electronics costs. Look for the Factory model to have more power + suspension upgrades while they implement cost reductions on the base bike to be in line with Japanese sport bikes.
@rlsedition
@rlsedition 3 жыл бұрын
@@FancyAnimal Good design doesn't cost any more than bad design and the same can be said for the electronics - once you have ride-by-wire and a digital dash it just takes a few more sensors and software to add more features. Aprilia spent plenty of that powertrain, even though it was derived from the existing V4 design. There will most likely be a Factory model coming, but then the expected price increase will potentially put it close to the Ducati Supersport S model.

Honestly between this and the CBR650R you're gaining 6bhp-ish, a shit tonne of unnecessary electronics and a much worse dealer network (in the uk) for £2500 more. Is it really worth it at this class of bike when you're basically buying a dressed up commuter? the choice seems obvious to me. Id rather they bin the pointless electronics and knock some money off because at a 10k price point they're competing with bikes they can't reach. Actual sport bikes like the ZX6R and the better all rounders such as the street triple/MT09/Z900 (all more powerful bikes too) I cant see this competing well the only thing its got on its side is "its an aprilia" which is worth nothing. I think what they should of looked to be doing was replacing the shiver750 range with this new 660 engine and bikes i think people would be more interested but then again iv heard rumors they are making an adv and a naked with this new 660 so maybe there is hope for those i feel those would suit it better.
