It's easy to think we need something else to shoot better photos. I loved the reference to Q2. I catch myself now and then thinking I would be happier if I had one. Then I take my X100F and shoot whatever I can, loving the form of the camera, its d-pad, and “not-so-sharp” lens. Thank you for your videos. I found your channel today and enjoy it a lot 🙂

I just did a review of my photos going back 7 years and really noticed how APS-C (Fuji, Ricoh) vs. FF (Nikon DSLR, Leica M) rarely ever made a difference. The only two circumstances were taking full advantage of a vintage lens look or the very few times a moderately wide lens still had some DOF limits (28-35 range). For me APS-C is filmic looking because it's the same size as Cinemtographers shooting Super-35. APS-C is "full frame" if you are talking 70s/80s or Tarantino films 😉

there you have it! there’s definitely cases where there’s a useful advantage, but like you said there’s rarely a difference; stylistically at least. i’ve been joking with people lately that i’m gonna start calling aps-c super 35, and what you said is one of my reasons lol

@@doriyancoleman Lenses with character and shallow DOF are certainly not exclusive to fullframe anymore either. The Laowa 33/0.95 or the 7Artisan 35mm M Sonar based formula are examples of that.

Hi Doriyan. Just found your channel and it's a refreshing change from the usual street photography ones. I tried an XT-20 for a year and it was ok. I just found it a bit small in my hands. I'm old and a wrist strap is a must! Went back to Sony with an a7rii and just like the feel of it in my hands. Was the last of the mark and a bargain. Some can't justify having a decent camera for street and another for landscape and living in Ireland it's what I do more of. What attracted me to your channel was your reference to manual focusing. Totally agree! Except I use old film camera lenses on an adapter. A mint Takumar 50mm F1.4 that I bought for about $12 with a film camera attached! A 35mm f2.4 version, it was about $50, and a Mitakon(?) 28mm f2.8 that cost pennies. I have a couple of modern lenses but find myself using them less and less. I agree about using a 28mm focal length. It's a forgotten length but I find it a great all rounder. Haven't done much street lately but your channel has inspired me again.

Thank you for this video. Photography, like life, is about making choices. I do not use full frame cameras. They don’t provide me with any benefits I need. As a result, I am a crop sensor photographer. I use both APSC and micro4/3. The images from both system are more than adequate for what I do. The two main benefits of crop sensor cameras are weight and size. I schlep my gear for many hours. Full frame is both larger and heavier than crop sensor bodies. Not only are the bodies lighter so are the lenses. This combination of benefits puts me squarely in the crop sensor world. As of right now, I can say with conviction, I will never use a full frame camera for street photography. For me, full frame provided no benefits over crop sensor bodies. The combined additional weight and size of a full frame body and lens make this choice a no go for me. If HCB was alive would he use a full frame body? Would he even continue using a Leica? How about the other giants of street photography? I vote with my pocket. Fuji and Panasonic for me. YMMV. Mask On Nurse Marty

Great video. Great advice. My question is what about low light. Let's say I'm in the city and it's dusk or dark do I need a camera/lens that has an f2, f1.8 or f1.4? Or is there some trick to getting around that? I would like to hear your advice? Do you have any videos on Low Light Street Photography?
@doriyancoleman

no videos on low light atm, but that would be a situation where a faster aperture would definitely help if your system doesn’t particularly do well at high iso, or doesn’t have ibis. personally i have an ibis-enabled camera that does well at high iso (fujifilm xt5), so ymmv depending on your system.

I hear you and your points make sense. I use Fuji myself. But would you not say that full frame has another level of detail and 3dimensionality in the photos? There does seem to be a slight difference to me, but it probably doesn't outweigh the size cons in most cases.

full frame can definitely have those advantages (ex: 61MP A7R IV, Leica M series, depth of field) and for some those differences can be the reasons to stick with it! more so my point was that even with those differences, the average / common hobby shooter might be better off with aps-c considering the qualities it has like size, affordability, etc. i love both aps-c and full frame for they are, and am even crazy enough to want to try medium format for street one of these days 🙏🏾

WOAH!… Let common sense prevail Bro! Having said all that, I shoot street with a used full frame Canon 6D classic. Body costs less than a used mirrorless APS-C Canon M50. Can use a whole host of vintage M42 Full frame lenses at the "correct" marked focal length… and they balance better on the 6D, than they do on mirrorless, which require an extension tube. Also, and very importantly, one battery in the Canon 6d lasts a whole week, when shooting every single day! So yes full frame is often overrated… but sometimes it's not! 😎

@@doriyancoleman yeah, technically they are, and as you said they started to take one of the main advantages of a bigger sensor away: higher pixel pitch at same resolution. Smaller sensors with smaller photosites definitely had a disadvantage in low light at high ISO due to their smaller photosites, but now they are loading FF sensors with 50/60MP and even the new GFX100(S) has reached the pixel pitch of Fujis APSC sensors…🤷🏼‍♂️😄 and you can clearly see these new FF / MF sensors struggling at high ISOs

To be able to have that 2.8 makes all of the difference. You wont see any professional getting paid to do this for a living use an apc-s with a kit lens or a classical 3.5-5.6 aperture. When you use lower quality cameras you can see the difference between pictures. Sometimes I use the apc-s mode in my camera to get that extra reach sure I’ll admit to that but when it comes to lenses, if you are doing professional work you need professional lenses🤷🏼‍♂️ that also depends on what type of work you do and what type of photography you are going to do but I rarely change my aperture from 2.8 because in my pictures it makes all of the difference, and you just cannot get the same results of a full frame 2.8 camera and a lens with an apc-s camera and a standard aperture lens. But this is just my personal opinion, I do agree with you though. If you these little things don’t matter to you or if you are doing for hobby then you probably don’t need all the fancy and expensive gear but if you are a professional and looking to make a living out of this then unfortunately you do need to spend more money and get better gear but your skills as a photographer is just as important if not more. Camera and lenses just help you take better pictures. You need to be skilled enough to know what you are doing and know how your camera is going to react in different situations

My brother in Allah/Christ/Jehovah, this is within the context of street photography where the majority of images are shot from f/4-f/22. I don’t think anywhere in Doriyan’s video he mentions you are any less professional for using less professional gear. I don’t believe he mentioned professional photography at any point, opinions aside! There is nothing wrong with your opinion as it is absolutely valid but your comment is misplaced, to tell you the truth, and adds nothing to the conversation that Doriyan posed.

though i see where you’re coming from, have to respectfully disagree with some of this. for example, a colleague of mine has been shooting for Nike and Adidas (among other brands) for almost two years now, and just recently moved from his kit lens. affords his home with it. the x100v isn’t considered to be the ideal “pro” body, but i’ve done work for amazon studios and other organizations with that, the x-h1 and the x-pro with f2 primes. plenty of people utilize the higher ends of their lenses, but low aperture for sure has its uses. i will say, if you have the income to advance the gear, yeah that makes sense, but in the my experience and those of many i know, it really boils down to light, compositions and networking. and especially in street photography where i was discussing it, its not a requirement at all

Pretty sure he made it clear that this video is within the Street Photography genre. I use APS-C for Pro work and I don't know why people gush over full frame quality that much when you can achieve the same results with a lighter gear, If i wanted more depth and resolution then I might as well get a GFX 100S over a Full Frame Sony/Nikon/Canon. Also F2 lenses do exist in lighter more compact body to get to "2.8 iN fUlL frAmE tErmS" If you really consider yourself as a professional you know that you can pull off great images if not better with "lesser" cameras. Photographers who tend to blame gear over their skills is just one of the reasons why beginner photographers try to look for expensive gear even tho they haven't achieved much in photography yet.

What does the Leica have that the Fuji XE4 doesn't? Well, to judge from the moaning I heard from some Fuji users, for vastly more money it must certainly have a super chonky grip. So much sense in this vid. With slightly wider lenses, even autofocus is not that meaningful in street photography - meaning you can benefit from the extremely low prices of manual focus primes.
