You made a good choice - 50mm is the angle that our eyes see in real life. I don't get why photographers don't use wrist strap especially if they have expensive camera.

Thanks Tim. I am retired and currently studying photography full time at Dayton State Collage in Florida. I have taken the plunge and invested in the Canon RF system with the holy trinity L series lenses. I first became interested in street photography when I took a single introduction class at Georgia State University in the early 80s. I still have my Canon AE1, and it is in excellent working condition. Until watching your video I was prepared to make an investment in something less intrusive just for my street work. I just returned from a month in Yorkshire where I practiced street work in Harrogate. The L lenses drew a lot of unwanted attention and comments. After watching this video, I am going to hit the streets with my Canon t3i Rebel and that faithful AE1. What savings. Many thanks for all of your tutorials.

On the verge of dipping my toe into street photography! As a committed Nikon user (Z8 & Z50) I find the "baby" Z50 (yes, with a PD wrist strap) ideal to use when you just want a camera to be at the ready, e.g. at summer fairs and shows etc. Just got hold of the Viltrox 56mm and looking forward to giving it a test run! I'm a relative newcomer to your channel but the videos I've watched so far are proving to be a great help in planning how best to tackle street photography when I retire in a few weeks. Thanks!

I love my XE-4. I chose that over the X100V because I don't want to be stuck with only one lens, I prefer being able to switch lenses when I fancy it. Have the same wrist strap and it's been a godsend. I do like the recommendation for people starting off to simply use their phone cameras for a while and experiment with them, too many people feel they have to dive in and buy expensive gear to take great pics, when in reality if you're just starting your photography journey it's more important to get the basics down. And have fun, too, I think a lot of us forget that sometimes (myself included).
@timjamiesonphotos

Yeah 100% agree! I love the X-E4 too. If it just had weather sealing and the same screen as the X-T5 it (and maybe a better grip) it would pretty much be my perfect camera. And yeah, no point trying to get good at street photography by buying gear. Try it first, you like it, then invest in some gear. In my humble opinion

Concise, to the point, practical advice, Tim. Well paced and illustrated variant of “my bag” theme. Budget, ergonomics, and best lens to match eye “field of view” spot on. Have you ever performed a Lightroom metadata search to determine which lens(es) you used for most shots? Blending into environment is important, IMO, so I prefer a do-it-yourself repurposed canvas surplus army gas mask bag - cut up yoga mat makes good dividers - 1 body, 2 lenses plus small stuff. BTW, Tim, congrats on having e-mag “Depth of Field” cover your earlier post “Getting More Creative With Photography In a Small City”.👍 That kind of exposure should really help boost channel views and subs. Cheers!

The best lens, personal opinion, is a nifty fifty with a DSLR. Its fast with great depth of field to isolate the subject and details to tell a story in the image. I prefer to use a point and shoot camera because it can be discreet. My camera of choice is a Lumix TZ90, its compact, set the focal length and can dial in the settings I want.

If you can't hold and easily use a camera, all other considerations are irrelevant. The digital cameras with menus are simply too painful to use for many of us with arthritis in our fingers. I use a 1970's SLR with no automated features. Bracketing exposures provides light control. Composition choice and choosing an appropriate moment and cropping are all that I need.

When I left Nikon in 2017 I didn't have an immediate answer to fill the hole of "pro APS-C camera" (NIkon stopped making them post-DSLR) and as primarily a concert photographer APS-C is really important to me. But I was a bit burned out from work and welcomed the break, I was already interested in Fujifilm though, but I couldn't tolerate that the X-T1 only had one SD slot. Still, in that time frame I DID invest in a Peak Design 15" Messenger bag and the capture clip and they've been my best camera related purchases ever. And in the end I caved and bought a used X-T1 (price was right) and an X-T3 when that came out. Now I shoot on X-T5. Anyway, the point: Don't get a good bag. Get a GREAT bag.

I have the Ricoh GRIII which is compact enough to slip into my pants pocket. No need for a camera bag or even a sling. It's size means it does not stand out and you can use the screen on the back to take my shots without the need to press the shutter button, which means taking photographs is more discrete. Comes with its own WiFi which mean I can use an app on my mobile to upload my photographs to the cloud. As minimalist street photography goes it is hard to beat.

I'm using my XT-2 with 23mm f2 for street photo and Love this combo. I'm currently working in a project. Btw, I Don't Feel the Need to upgrade to XT-5, I don't Need High megapixels or videos features, also the build quality of XT-5 is NOT comparable with XT-2 Made in Japan.

got the xt-2 also - along w/ t3, and h2 recently - but I always take my xt-2 with me because it's so not so expensive now and it does everything. but I don't know why no one talkes about the 16-50 OIS-II. It is darn cheap and tack sharp at f5.6 or f6.3 - and it is so lightweight! On my last holiday I just took the t2, that 16-50 plus a Viltrox 23/1.4 -- and I can carry everything either in my normal daypack or in a very in-expensive messenger bag. Just one more thing: I recently picked up an Olympus PEN-F and 17/1.8, both second hand, and they also fit nicely in my messenger back. It's the ideal street photography kit! - Any other Pen or a Lumix G.. would do that, too.

You can change focal lengths on the Gr digital system. I regularly change from 28 mm equivalent to 21mm with a converter lens. I also use a Nikon D300s with a 24mm f2.8 afd lens, very rapid autofocus and 35mm equivalent.

You cannot change lenses with the Ricoh which is what I said in my video. Sure you can add an adapter and converter lens but that’s limited, I can’t get all the focal lengths I want and if you’re buying a Ricoh for compactness what’s the point of screwing on a lens.

Okay, I just gotta comment.. I see too many KZfaqr folks not know how to put a lav on properly. You gotta point it upwards towards your face. I know it's tricky to do because the clip design is stupid and meant for suit jackets you can clip horizontally rather than t-shirts, but if you loop the cable into the clip and turn it all upwards, it'll give you way better lav audio. Sorry, it's just as someone who's worked in film/TV for 20yrs and even had to put a lav on people for my own projects, it drives me a bit nuts when I see it and it's so prominent in frame to me ;)

The problem with using a phone for photography of any kind is that you don't really learn anything about using a camera or photography in general, if you are talking photos with a phone and say that you would like to move to a proper cameras chances are you will look at the camera and say holy crap what are all these buttons and dials, what do all these little symbols mean and you have to edit files it's above my pay grade. Well take a deep breath and relax it can be done. When I started I had to learn how to use a computer, digital cameras, editing and printing , this will not happen overnight but as I said l went for knowing very little about digital photography to photographing wildlife and landscapes and latter events including weddings. I have sold and framed prints and supplied every client that I photographed events for prints
