Munchausen Syndrome and Munchausen's by Proxy are rare but fascinating mental disorders. Attention and sympathy are the main drivers in these disorders with an innocent child often caught and trapped in the firing line.

Munchausen's by Proxy is almost always found in women with a child under 6 years old being subjected to fabricated illness 75% of the time. In this video I explore the curious features of these disorders and the psychological processes that underpin them.
Plus look out for parts 2 and 3 in this exciting new series where I look at a psychiatric defence and if that would work in these cases, and I examine the real-life tragic and surprising case of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. You don't want to miss them!

My mother did this with me when I was a child. I had a bone marrow procedure that was probably unneeded. She lived through trauma- sexual abuse- she struggled with anxiety, lived with BPD and she WORSHIPPED doctors. She got a lot of attention from the gods she adored and revered (doctors.) She worked in doctors' offices. I grew up with trauma that she inflicted and was complicit to by the perpetrators. I have an ACEs score that is extremely high. Fortunately I had a grandmother who adored me- that was the one adult that gave me so much love and adoration- which, believe me, I needed. Eminem's mother was probably a sociopath and narcissist.

At my trust we had a case a couple of years back of a 2yr old that had an unexplained HIE at 6mo old. The child because of resulting difficulties had recurrent admissions for various reasons. On the last admission the parent was filmed (by another patients parent in the same bay) extracting fluid from a surgical drainage bag then injecting that fluid into the child via a PEG tube. That parent was arrested shortly after and banned from any contact with that child and I’m assuming the safeguarding is ongoing as would be the criminal case. This would be a case of MBP in my tiny mind

I was a victim of a mild case of this when I was a child. Child services did basically nothing. My father was meant to be present at all future medical appointments and they checked in maybe once. Obviously my mother just found new doctors and continued the abuse. These narcissist are very manipulative and convincing. I still struggle to know what is true.

@9:25 You really should do a video on conversion disorder… it’s absolutely fascinating and in some cases totally farcical (like the patient who was apparently paralysed from the neck down but was observed by nursing staff masturbating on a regular basis while an inpatient on DB1 ward @Maudsley!)

It is extremely rare but again we had a case of a child from another country admitted due to feeding problems initially but on subsequent admissions for the same problem suffered unexplained hypoglycaemia episodes. The unexplained hypo’s became the focus of the child’s symptoms with no reasonable explanation. Once suspicion was aroused a glucose bag that the patient was hooked up to was examined and fast acting insulin was found in that bag. The child’s sibling was diabetic and apparently one of the parents had been administering FA insulin into the IV glucose. It went to court but unfortunately the embassy involved whisked the child’s parents back to their home country before sentencing so sentencing was passed with no real consequences. I hope that child is ok and safe now.

Also, regarding a BPD link - maybe this is a stretch though - a 'sick' child is reliant on its mother, can't do things independently like after school sports, and therefore can't 'abandon' the mother?

I doubt that you will ever see this but on the off chance you do, I hope you could give me some professional input. My late brother who passed away last month at the age of 37 has been disabled since he was eight. My father took him to doctors all around the U.S.A. to try and find a cure for him. He even took him to the Cleveland Clinic to have the run tests on him for two weeks to see if they could figure out what was wrong. He has also had surgery to try and fix his medical issue. My late brother suffered from chronic nausea and whenever a doctor said that the illness was psychosomatic, they stopped seeing that doctor, began bad mouthing them, and would find a new doctor. Since my brother's passing, he left me everything of his. Upon going through his medical records, I found some abnormalities. My parents had CPS called on them back in 1994 because the school complained of malnutrition. As a result, there was a psych evaluation, and it was determined that his illness was due to a strong unhealthy attachment to my father and his illness may get better if that attachment was reduced. At a later point, there is another document stating that my brother would probably start getting better if my parents gave positive reinforcement to him when his symptoms were low and give no reinforcement when his symptoms were high. Any time someone suggested therapy, antipsychotics, or anything having to do with the mind, it was outright rejected. I even found a letter they had a medical professional write to CPS and send to my father for him to edit and then sent back and edited version. I have the original and the edited copy in my possession. My brother was never able to hold down a job and lived with my mom his whole life. My mom kicked my father out of the house six years ago for his continuous abusive narcissistic behavior and infidelity. My brother ended up dying because he was in failure to thrive, and the oxycodone was too much for his system. The police labeled it as an accidental overdose. Twenty-five days later, my mother died of a glioblastoma. They both left me everything and my father is not letting me execute their wills. I know to seek legal counsel, but I have wondered for a long time about my brother's health and the only thing that seemed to fit was my father having MSBP and my late brother developing a somatic disorder as a result. I don't know of any experts to talk to about this. If you would be willing to hear my story and look at the documents I have found, I would greatly appreciate it and it would help give closure to a part of my life story. I know you are probably very busy and won't be able to help or have time and if that is the case, I understand. Everyone has lives, I just thought I would make an attempt, just in case it worked. Thanks for your work and all you do.

I worked in a Drug Court program with parents who were trying to reunify with their children that had been taken away due to drug use/sales/theft, etc. in the 8 years that I worked in that program, we had 2 women that were ultimately diagnosed with Munchausen’s by proxy, and one woman diagnosed with factitious disorder, or Munchausen’s syndrome. Fascinating people! I found them to be smart, but not well educated (that’s how they all got “caught”), and extremely manipulative! Their therapists said none of them made any progress in treatment. Are there any men with this syndrome? It was really quite fun to confront them!

Had a paed pt 30yrs ago, that needed examination under anaesthetic & hospitalisation, suspected & confirmed M by P. I'm now, in a relationship, my partner has 2 boys. His ex ( a chariity community worker who works with Social Services) is getting every diagnosis under the sun. Yet zero symptoms when they stay with us! Jumping from service to service, now agreeing to meds that I don't believe the boys need, taking them out of school. Withdrawing them from grandparents & family. Gets beyond defensive when my partner questions her & refuses let him know when " health" assessments occur. I'm seeing too many red flags! We are keeping a diary of dates & behaviour. But, can't report to Social Services because she works with them & looks like a professional. Yet with no actual qualifications. Any advice please?

I know this is an older video but I don't understand people getting high off quetiapine. I've been on it for 12 years and it has been so detrimental to my health. Stopping my thoughts, worsened black outs/time loss, and above all- the physical withdrawal symptoms. When I miss one dose, I can't sleep, start shaking, become feverish, vomiting, and have to call out of work. Have your patients ever experienced such harsh withdrawals?
