vPub Live - Our Top 40 Distilleries

Күн бұрынDo you remember this? Back when it was a Top 10? Well, it's time to bring it back and then immediately pass it on. Lots of reasons why...
When I presented this, I'd only collected a few days of respondents worth, and they had mostly been collected form my community. Immediately struck by how interesting it was, I realised I'd happened upon something that, as far as I'm aware, doesn't currently exist. Something that could be brutal, but very valuable, interesting but revealing.
In the end, we took the short snapshot of 707 respondents and I shared the Top 25. As soon as it had gone out I was asked: What was number 26?
One of the issues with a concept like this is that I don't think I can keep it. Believe me, I'd like it - The Aqvavitae Top 25 or whatever, but it's not the right thing to do. It doesn't work, not on the Aqvavitae channel, for reasons I'll cover. But this will go ahead and it will get life, hopefully a bigger breath of life than I can give it on the channel here.
More to share this week; my own take on why the selections are as they are - and what's missing. Let's boost it to a Top 40 and then hand it over to a capable team, rather than an individual.

I love Laphroaig so much because of the FLAVOUR that I'm willing to overlook that they are coloured. If they were entirely craft presented they would be the perfect whisky to me 🥰

Weren’t there actually two Lowland distilleries in the top 40, Bladnoch and Daftmill. Great show and love these group polls!

my grandfather whoever he is had a very old cask 150 yrs of age blessed by his majesty hrumff but this taste we dont know our village doesn't drink

Great vPub again! I was dismayed not to see Aultmore in even the top 50. Part of me is cheering because it's so under the radar. But integrity bottlings on their core range and delicious liquid should be celebrated. The 12yr is a delicious mineralic dram that needs a bit of time in the glass to reach its complex potential. Otherwise, I can't argue with the top ten choices. Great to reflect on the distilleries that made the top 40. Love the takeaways too!

Great vPub Roy and an interesting topic. I've tried whisky from 24 out of the top 40, but 2 of those were IBs and a further 9 I've only had one bottle from. Out of the top 10, Springbank is the only one I haven't tried. Cheers!

I can't wait to visit some of these distilleries in May. We don't have plans for Campbeltown, but might have to take a detour on our way back from Islay. I really want that Bruichladdich too, may just wait til I'm there to see if I want to buy. I think I'm ok with the price, with so many companies in the US selling bourbon or rye half that age for 100-200 bucks or more. The shipping is prohibitive for me right now.

Hi Roy. A throughly interesting vPub indeed. For me , my favourite distillery is Benromach simply because they have the criteria that I want in a distillery and they are, liquid quality, price and availability. Shame that the core range is 43% but the 15 is still a very good malt (for me). Picked up the replay Friday. Slàinte Roy 🥃

Interesting and compelling vPub! Cheers. Would ‘ve loved to see Ardmore and glenrothes in the lineup (based on indie releases, obviously). Sure Raasay will only rise, same with Glen garioch and Blair Athol. A possible hiccup in your take away: there’s 2 lowland distilleries in the top 40, you left out Bladnoch. 😉🥃

I'd want to slip my beloved Balcones in there, though Waco, Texas, is 4,500 miles from Scotland Great vPub as always, and FWIW I'm both most shocked and least surprised that Bruichladdich ranked third overall. The Barflies love authenticity if nothing else. Cheers!

Just watched the replay, great content as usual. On the whole the ranking seemed about right to me, with one exception. I was really surprised by the poor showing of Tamdhu. Ok it's pricey for what it is but so are others much higher up the list. It would almost certainly be in my top 10. Dramface (happy birthday) here I come with my Tamdhu vote haha! 😋 I'm still tied up on a Thursday night but hope to be in the live vpub again soon. Cheers

Roy, you have two Lowland distilleries in the top 40 rather than just one. Not only Daftmill but also Bladnoch (37). I'd love to try Benromach Organic 2014, but only the 2011 (over-priced), 2012, and 2013 (recently arrived) are available (NZ), and from a comment in your (replay) channel last week (& reviews elsewhere) those don't seem to be at the same level of quality as the 2014 that's selling out quickly where you are. I'm very keen on Benromach but sadly the last CS available here was 2009 batch 4, sold out a couple of years ago.

Such an interesting data set to distil and pull apart. The lack of Speyside representation, as in the OSWAS, should be an alarm call for the region but even as a sherry head I'm not overly surprised especially when I glance at the current make up of my stash and where it's heading. Will track with interest.

My 40 favourite distilleries are (the order is not relevant except maybe for the 10 first) : There are distilleries whose whiskies I haven't tasted yet like Glenwyvis, Dornoch for example and others that I haven't tasted since 20 years ! 1 Springbank 2 Bruichlladich 3 Laphroaig 4 Glenallachie 5 Tobermory (Ledaig) 6 Arran 7 Benromach 8 Lagavulin 9 Speyburn 10 Ardbeg 11 Adnamurchan 12 Glen Gyle (Kilkerran) 13 Bunnahabhain 14 (Port Askaig) ? 15 Kilchoman 16 Wolfburn 17 Craigellachie 18 Redbreast (CS) 19 Tamdhu 20 Knockdhu (AnCnoc) 21 Lindores 22 Glen Scotia 23 Lochlea 24 Balblair 25 Auchentoshan 26 Isle of Raasay 27 Glen Garioch 28 Costwolds 29 Talisker 30 Bladnoch 31 Edradour 32 Aberlour 33 Glendronach 34 Glenturret 35 Glengoyne 36 Lochlea 37 Glasgow 1770 38 Loch Lomond 39 Lagg 40 Deanston PS The center of Switzerland is 1 hour ahead of the center of the United Kingdom. I'm not a bourbon fan. I haven't tasted Canadian whiskies and Swedish whiskies. I tasted some Japanese like Nikka the barrel, yoichi, that I found good, but not as good as my favourite scotch whiskies. Slàinte Christian

@christianrausis7665 Port Askaig is a brand rather than a distillery. It often contains Caol Ila but can/has contained whisky from other distilleries in some releases.

@@christianrausis7665That's not what that brand is selling. If you want certainty of distillery then you can buy distillery own bottlings. Port Askaig is offering something different. It likely costs a little less for that reason. Not unlike other brands/releases where the originating distillery is again not named. You're saying you want both the cheaper price and the certainty, but that's having your cake and eating it as well. I suspect the companies involved will say you can't have both. I suspect they will say you must choose which of those two you value more highly.

@@jbar6284 I was not at all saying that I want the cheaper whisky. Cao Ila 12 is 54 CHF in Switzerland, but I prefer Port Askaig that is more expensive. Port Askaig 8 is 59 CHF and I love Port Askaig 100 proof that is 74 CHF. It was pure curiosity to know if there are other distilleries involved than Caol Ila. Sure I won't rebuy Caol Ila 12 and I'll rebuy Port Askaig. Slàinte.

@@christianrausis7665That's surprising, as I would have expected Port Askaig to be cheaper than ~comparable Caol Ila OB in most markets. That's typically what distillery-unnamed whiskies offer.

I am still fairly new to Whisky. And although I love the Kilkerran Heavily Peated and Campbeltown Loch, and a SMWS bottling of Glen Scotia, I purchased a Springbank 10 and … Well , I don’t like it yet. Time will tell, but unfortunately other expressions of Springbank are difficult to acquire.

May I ask how old you are? Maybe you'll appreciate Springbank 10 in a few years, if you find it and if it's not too expensive!! Very difficult to find in Switzerland too. I appreciate Kilkerran heavily peated a lot. I find Campbeltown Loch good, but for me Springbank 10 is much better. (I'm 65 years old) If you like Kilkerran hp, you should like Port Charlotte 10, Longrow peated (Springbank), Laphroaig Quartercask, Ledaig 10, Port Askaig Cask Strength, Kilchoman Loch Gorm and Sanaig, Lagavulin 8 etc..

DramFace is one of my daily clicks in the morning before work starts. Would definitely miss it if it weren't around! Great list, pretty much has all or most of the distilleries that are really worth looking out for at the moment, in my opinion.

My mine take from last year's list and the current list on Dramface is that Tomatin/Cu Bocan is SO underrated! And although they wouldn't make my top 10 I have always really enjoyed IB's from Glen Spey. In five years time I'd expect Lochlea, Raasay, Kingsbarns, Lagg and Torabhaig all to be firmly in the top 20.

Bowmore used to be my favourite and go-to whisky. But when they started to release redicouls versions and trying to compete with Macallan I lost all respect for it. Tried the 12 yo two years ago just to see what had happened. I was dissapointed.

i paid £115 for the octomore 7.3 so im going to pay £150 for bruichladdich 18 too. it's good whisky

Of course, it should be at that price! I prefer to buy Port Charlotte 10 , Bruichlladich Bere Barley, Longrow peated and Laphroaig Quartercask for the price. They are also good whiskies and much cheaper!

After a long hiatus finally caught up with a vPub! Great list and agree with most of them. Let's see if the old guard sees this and maybe decide to change a few things to appeal more to the enthusiasts! 7/10 not too shabby
