This song hits even harder when you know the full context of Jacqli's (the singer) backstory. That part of the lyrics about being locked in the birdcage, betrayed by the world, and lost a beautiful song did happen in her life. The cruelty she endured was enough to make anyone despise humanity and she actually did for a time. Then here she is using all those years of suffering and betrayal to save another hurting soul. So much character development is conveyed in one song.

Ar Tonelico is an absolute gold-mine of amazing and unique music. One of the singers being Jacqli/Mir (final boss of the first game) adds to the emotion of the song. I understand that the traction on these Ar Tonelico reactions are not the best. But just letting you know this series meant a lot to me as it is what define my career now as a game developer. So much thoughts were poured into these Ar Tonelico Hymns, and seeing a reaction with a REACTOR THAT UNDERSTAND the context/style of the song as a story, really means a lot to me. Great reaction! Ar Tonelico songs/hymns are Stories, Epics, conveyed in Melodies. And you analyze it so well. Subbed for the slim chance of another Ar Tonelico reaction. My suggestion would be Ar=Ciel Ar=Dor as it is an Epic of The Creation of the World.

Ar Tonelico is a series that leans heavily on its music, since magic is brought forth through song. Personally, I can't wait for a react to the METHOD_REPLEKIA song which is the song representing the ingame Replekia system that basically aggregates up to 100 collectible Reyvatels to boost the power of one of the main heroines, which shows in how powerful the song is from beginning to head.

This song take a completely new meaning when you realize this is an improvised song made for the Heart of the planet, reason why it is more of a conversation than a song. Quoting: "This is a Song that Jacqli made to converse with the Heart of the Land that was hidden in the deepest reaches of Gaea. Technically speaking, it's a high-level kind of Hymmnos because of each line being improvised by Jacqli whenever the Heart replies to her feelings or whenever she expresses her feelings, something that not many Reyvateils would be capable of doing. Particularly important is the fact that this Song is created from the synchronization established between the Reyvateil and the Heart of the Land once the Heart has started singing, but this only happens if both sides are willing to at least talk to each other: if they do, they will make a Song like this one, but otherwise it will end in failure. Additionally, this Song isn't a Hymmnos Extract proper due to the fact that it's improvised and doesn't make use of any of Ar tonelico's resources to cause its effects." "It was sung by Jacqli to remove the shell around the Heart that was in Gaea, and also plays in the battle against the Mind Avatar. Also known by the name Spheria."

I mean, all songs are 'improvised', in that they're built ('extended') from a template. Song magic functions by inputting emotions (DH waves) to the Ar Tonelico network, which amplifies and returns them as physical effects, the exact lyrics are generated on the spot. On the other hand... creating a song on the spot like this is definitely... Reyvateils are good at manipulating their own emotions. That's how Song Magic works. Every song has a DH template recorded in the Cosmosphere to produce the correct effect, the Reyvateil, by means of their superior control, feels what is necessary. BUT this isn't that. is a transfiguration of genuine feeling, an actual conversation through the medium of Dynamic-Harmonic connection, not Song Magic a predictable feat of input-output, but something more.

Oh, AT is back to Marco's channel! And it is back with one of most technically interesting hymmns of entire series. Potentially, it could be done as a proper duet, but for non-linearity of the plot it would require making at least two versions, so Gust ended up making it a song for a single performer. Still, as already told by others, it _is_ a conversation in a form of a song.
@lestat4440

The thing is, the one singing (Mir) isn't in your party at that point. So it would be the same for both routs.
@pavelkolmakov8278
@pavelkolmakov8278 Жыл бұрын
How does her being or not being in the party affects who should sing? As I see it, it should be either Jakuri & Cloche or Jakuri & Luka depending on the route. Although Heart of Gaea is not technically Cloche/Luka, it is deeply connected to one of them (even "Metafalica" itself is different depending on the route) and it would be logical for Akiko Shikata or Haruka Shimotsuki to sing relevant part. I don't know the reason, maybe they had no such idea from the beginning, maybe budget, maybe timeline, maybe some purely creative reasons (I, personally, do not like the official hymmns sung in duet or trio, I feel like they are weakest ones in the series, maybe I am not alone in this opinion), but ultimatelly Gust made this a hymmn sung by a single person (Noriko Mitose) and it ended up quite well.

I cannot believe I utterly missed this upload after recommending Ar Tonelico several times. Shame on me! As such, this comes a bit late, but all vocal songs in Ar Tonelico serve a technical purpose. They are program instructions through which almost all machinery can be controlled. However, the instructions will only function if conveyed through genuine emotional expressions, which is why the vast majority of songs are pretty intense and personal - the more emotion a song contains, the more power it has. The very language designed for the game supports this, as expressions often include your own emotional stance on the topic at hand as part of the basic structure. Personally, I can recommend "EXEC_HIBERNATION" for a MASSIVE piece of greatness, and "EXEC_DESPEDIA" for something crazy and mind warping, and that's just off the top of my head. This game is amazing in countless ways for me.

One of the aspescts of Ar Tonelico 2 that I find most fascinating is how the songs mixes some really melodic, light chords, giving a very "windy" folk sounds, like nature speaking, and then, it dashes it with some really heavy and potent synth guitars and mixers, signaling how Mettafalica, their land, is a synthetic land desparately trying to go back to the time it was a green paradise. The justaposition is so jarring, but so meaningful to the themes of the game! Gosh, it's beautiful!

Marco, the songs in Hymmnos mainly use the emotion of the person who is pronouncing them and in this case, you are listening to the intermediate version of the Hymmnos language. But every word in the song will have a feeling of the person singing it. (This language can only be spoken by song or written only) Because in the most advanced part, which is the New Testament, it contains programming codes in our view, but it is called Binasphere Formula and is used to complement the emotions transmitted in music and speeches.

i find it very ironic that the things you seemed to struggle with and confused you are the things i understood or at the very lest in a very non-descript way "get", but the reason i got recommended this channel in the first place is to understand something i don't: emotion in music not as consequence of context or direct descriptors, but as its own inherent factor. like the concept that a melody, out of context, without text, without anything to drive an explanation except the scale of notes itself can feel sad/happy/glorious/etc to me is merely a human construct, like i may get a song may "feel sad" but whereas for someone it can cause an implicit instant reaction of "oh how that's sad", to me i would have to actively think about it and go "ooooh right, that's a melody that's often heard in songs associated to sadness so i guess this means that this melody is sad" i dunno maybe it's cause i'm autistic or whatever but i don't get that part of music but i wonder if perhaps this is also why i get this? i'm more of a logical thinker as evidence in fact how another thing that wasn't for you, outer wilds, connected to me from beginning to end. when i look at ar tonelico music i see a much more... logical approach to emotions in music, which is actually not that surprising when you think about it as hymmnos isn't just a language, but a programming language and a language built to be inherently melodic, it is made not to be good for conversational dialogue but to be perfect for those other 3 things: communicating commands and creation of them in a hyperlogical way, creating music, and expressing feelings. when you take that in consideration it can become much more easy to see how Ar songs tend to have a more direct approach to the expression of their feelings, as the melody IS directly tied to the lyrics first in written form and then in melodic form, where the language in a way comes before the music itself in conveying the emotion and more importantly than that, the context. compare it to say feeling the emotions of a battle theme in genshin, there's a much more solid "story" or perhaps it would be better to say a "declaration" in ar tonelico songs, it's not guesswork based on feeling how different chords relate to emotions and guessing how those emotions may be tied to the story, personally i consider it less subtle but in an ironic twist of fate, this style being so out of the norm makes it subtle in its own right especially when it's so multi-layered. anyway to keep it short, i think you shouldn't try to approach it as you would normal music, and live it more like you would have lived outer wilds, as a puzzle to piece together, or for a more reasonable example, like trying to get meaning out of abstract art, where often the context and intent dictates 50% or more of the emotional feeling an artist was trying to portray while ultimately meaning nothing until you yourself get something out of the piece itself. that though is merely my perspective as someone who approaches music in what is perhaps the polar opposite way of how you do so... i dunno, maybe i'm wrong in giving that tip? perhaps there's something to be gathered from both approaches which is why i wouldn't mind understanding how to "feel emotions thrgouh music" in a more natural way as you do.

I'm so glad you're giving Ar Tonelico themes a listen, I love the OST and how unique it is. Also, bless the patreon consistently suggesting Noriko Mitose's tracks, Marco is now suitably freaked out by the Ar Tonelico OST lmao. I think out of the three main singers for the series, her compositions are always the most experimental and "out-there", which are pretty fun to watch your reactions to. It would be really interesting to see how you feel about the songs from the other singers; I'm a huge fan of Akiko Shikata's work. Thanks so much for the video!

"the sound is similar throughout all these EXECS" and then AT3 threw us curveballs in EXEC_CUTYPUMP/. and EXEC_EP=NOVA/. I'm happy to hear more reactions to Ar Tonelico music, and if in the future, Surge Concerto. They're all wonderfully done and all very interesting pieces of music, and at times, the chaos of some of them is intentional since they're backdrops to the plot (EP=NOVA being kinda exempt from this.. tho the reason it's like that is also plot. The singer (in universe) chooses the lyrics herself!) but I think another contributing factor to this is that there's multiple hymmnos languages, each with their own sound and meaning. If you want to hear different versions, then there's the METHODs, the CLASSes, and those other tracks without a unifying identifier except language used (lxa ti-cia, chmod b111000000n) or just each game's Singing Hill/Utau Oka track, I feel they convey the kind of sounds you're going to hear from the game and give you a taste of the dominant languages you'll come across. It's nice. there's a lot to love and a song for everyone.

I know its likely a Patreon thing, but if you ever get a request for EXEC_PAJA, please listen to both versions. The quick and dirty explanation: EXEC_PAJA, also called Purger, is essentially a powerful program to shut off any Song Magic in the singer's line of sight. The party seeks out the storage medium containing this 500 year old program to make an invincible monster (basicallt a virus created and sustained with song magic) killable. When you finally arrive ready for battle, you have two Reyvateils who can sing the song, and you get to pick which to install the program into. This affects the boss music, since the chosen party member will be stuck singing and can't battle. Aurica and Misha are the two choices. The fascinating thing is, unlike EXEC_CHRONICLE_KEY, which you listened to before, this is only the program function, not the full song package. This means either girl processes and creates a song differently, with entirely different lyrics and tone. They both do the same thing effectively, its just wild how variable it can be. Also, EXEC_PAJA/.#MISYA EXTRACTING is my favorite boss music for any RPG hands down. Aurica's version is fine, but Misha just blows me away with how it sounds like a Shinto prayer performed at a rock concert.

And this isn't the only time this happens in the series. In 3, there's a character who has a song installed that basically makes a huge EMP blast to disable enemy weapons. Traditionally, it seems the song is some sort of war dirge or anthem, but the character who sings it is... quite childlike, so it comes out differently. Your reasoning for needing this song is to get two sides of a battle to stop fighting, so of course this childlike girl sings a song about two cats fighting and about how they should stop and become friends instead. I wouldn't call it a GREAT song, but it's quite silly when you know the context.

man, i forgot to comment here, but i know i watched it before! this is one of my big faves from the second game, i'm so glad to have seen it here. it's actually a boss theme where the singer is talking to the boss holding one of the main heroines in a cage, but the cage is their own mind, essentially.

Ar Tonelico! As an Arknights player, it was the series I was reminded of when I first heard the songs of the Abyssal Hunters. Sure, they don't necessarily have the same meaning or tonal direction - if that's how I can put it - but that feeling of "haunting emotion" was what struck me. I never got into the series itself, just that even what little I know, the power of song and feeling was what I took away from it.

YESSS I was hoping for more Ar Tonelico, it rules a really neat thing that the first AT game did was with EXEC_PAJA - there are two versions of the track ('EXEC_PAJA/.#Misya extracting' and 'EXEC_PAJA/.#Orica extracting') and the reason is that there's a point in the game where you choose which of two characters will use this particular song magic. The songs have the same effect, they're meant to do the same thing (I guess you could think of it as both singers working from the same prompt), but the tracks are SO different in ways that really reflect each singer's character. It's fascinating stuff. (Also I love that the grammar of Hymmnos - the conlang used in a lot of the lyrics - effectively has the emotional equivalent of musical notation front-loaded into each phrase (i.e. the intensity of the emotion, the emotion itself, and how long the speaker wants the emotion to last). The magic system being a blend of a computer-like structure and the power of song is SO GOOD)

Great reaction! Played through all three games. I think the whole idea behind game is there towers on the planet with a little lifespace near them and people surviving in this condition. There females that have abilities to sing song magic (reyvateils), some of them are fabricated by humans (most powerful one) some are natural. To do this they need to connect to tower and to "upload" and sing the song. Hymnos is the same. In hymnos there allways many sides that singing there allways a reyvateil and system of tower(that mechanical voices). Some of the hymnos used to connect sattelites, some to activate programs in tower or tower itself. So it is allmost a fusion of programming fantasy language and lyrical fantasy language.

Strange translation of this song you have found I agree. The Artonelico wiki indicates that line 'amniotic fluid' line to be "Fill the flow of my feelings, and let me hear your Song". A different translation is the same except substitutes 'thoughts' in place of 'feelings'. From what I recall these song have to be double translated from Hymnos to Japanese then Japanese to English so all kinds of lost in translation can happen. Also the language was made for a video game series, it's not going to have anything as oddly specific as 'amniotic fluid'. Whoever did that took extreme liberties when interpreting 'fluy' which would be spring, pool (of water) according to the fansite that had the hymnos dictionary.

i disagree that it's a strange translation; people just aren't used to seeing those words. 'amniotic fluid' did startle me when i first saw this translation years ago because it wasn't what i had come to expect, and abstract could have definitely picked a different phrase, but i appreciate different interpretations of the lyrics of these ar tonelico songs. adding onto that, i still understood what was being said so i moved on. i can deal with one startling phrase if it means i get variety that makes sense for the song/context. tl;dr imo taking creative liberties is fine and things being directly translated word for word/literally doesn't always work out or make sense. ar tonelico lyrics are a gaggle of people having to put together their own poetry and i adore it!! i always tip my hat to anyone who translates stuff like this because oml i could never.

The big thing about the music of Ar Tonelico is that it's also musical representation of computer-like language. While the characters in world treat what Reyvateils do as magic it's technically more of them addressing humongous biomechanical machines. Don't get me wrong there are some songs there are used in battle and that's more of them producing an effect from their own ability as essentially Wi-Fi routers. This is also the reason why the music sounds the way it does it sounds like folk music but also electronic. Simply put, the machines they've had have been with them for hundreds if not thousands of years by this point. That being said it has been a while since I've looked into anything about Ar Tonelico. So, if there's any misunderstanding I have correct away.

OH MY FAVORITE TRACK. I adore the main singer, Mir, and her story is full of tragedy. This song feels so summative of who she's grown to be. In the first game we learned that Mir was used by humans, and had unspeakably terrible things done to her in order to make her develop more powerful song magic. Mir was made to be the perfect weapon, and have no emotions. Eventually, though, she Developed feelings, and created a song from her heart. Mir was crushed when the song was deemed useless by her creators. She put all her love of the world into something that was thrown away without a second thought. So she understands Gaea, which was made for a purpose it can't fulfill. Mir understands pain, and now has grown so much that she can reach out and sympathize with others, even if it's superficial or to further a goal. I find it wonderful that she grew so much between the games. This is one of the songs that made me want to learn Hymmeli. Sort of like Klignon, it CAN be actually spoken as a full language! There are a number of different dialects, unique modifiers and punctuation, and wildly interesting grammar. Hymmnoserver is a great resource for checking translations and learning about the language.

Late to the comments, but you got the essence of the song really damn well. Ar Tonelico Hymmnos songs have a bit of a convention for the instruments, where classical instruments are usually prevalent in the "good vibes" songs, while electric guitars and electronic/"artificial" sounds in general usually mean "bad vibes". I strongly recommend XaaaCi./ if you want to have your mind blown. A hint for that song that also applies to this one: the songs in Ar Tonelico are technically raw emotion being translated into melody and song, by the world's most advanced and powerful supercomputer located in the Tower that names the games, because melody and song are the most powerful way of conveying feelings and emotions. But even that infinitely powerful computer has its limits, and when you hear distortions and white noise, it's because the emotions are too deep and powerful for the computer to properly translate and the track glitches out. So for a moment in that solo, the emotions were almost too strong for the Tower to translate. Also, most songs have a short story that accompanies it summarizing the "feelings contained in the song" thay you can find on the wiki. The one for Sands of Time from Ar Tonelico 3 always gets me.

Short story short - these "songs" called as "Hymnos". In the game world, it is some sort of a voice called programe code, that resonance with a giant world helding towers, which is serves as a servers. Respond of Towers to call of singers, called "Reyvateils", is some sort of magic, with a pinch of salt added by singer emotion or personal background. For example, healing song of one singer is a nymph that plays a music, other is a fairy that sends to ally a medical dust.
