"Is that normal to feel like that is something you would hear in like a church?" Probably? The games are centered around the concept of using songs as magic/computer code and the songs are referred to as Hymns in universe (and a lot are sung in a Con-Language called Hymnnos). So in a lot of cases they are effectively praying for a miracle as they tell the tower how to restructure reality via the emotions expressed in song. It is a really interesting universe. Something that could be fun would be to look at the versions of EXEC_PAJA as it has two different versions, which by the text of the game I believe should be expressing the exact same emotions, but are VERY different songs. So I'd be curious as to whether you think they communicate the same emotion to you despite their very different expression. Alternatively, I am always a fan of EXEC_LINCA.

You add to that the hymnos is based a lot on the emotions in her grammar
@aquagondrag

Except they don't express the same emotions: the crystal they are Downloaded from contains the same base emotions, but the Reyvateil reinterprets them to craft her own version of that particular Song using her own senstitivity. Just looking at "Feelings Contained in This Song" for both Paja versions should prove that beyond any shadow of doubt.

ARPHAGE is a very complex song. It's simultaneously hopeful and despairing. It's a reversal of natural order. It's an attempt to exchange one's life to save the world. It's a song so powerful that halfway through, the song and the singer switch places as it takes control. This is especially so near the end, when the Ar Ciela lines are practically being screamed.

"Ascendsion to deity-hood" is very much hitting the nail on its head, lol. Spoiler for the story, but this song is sung by an amnesiac character who wished to use this song to save the world from an impending doom and for some reason she is the only one who can sing it. After some conflicts and shenanigans, she got to sing this song for real, and half way through the song, it unlocked her dormant memory and now she remember that she was not a mere human girl, but one of the goddess who wished to see humanity saved, descended upon this world to do so, bringing with her a salvation in the form of the song Arphage, sacrificing herself in return. The switch in emotion is something pretty evident throughout the song and I'm happy you caught on to some of that. I love the usage of vocal in this. Each part and lines have quite a distinct feel to its vocal usage, from a very light head tone usage to a somewhat more resonance placement to something chesty and very primal in its nature.

You're completely right about the comment 'ascending from person to deityhood,' the singer herself is actually one of the Wills of the World, specifically the one responsible for creating life. In an effort to save the dying world of Ar Ciel, she descends into a mortal form that was provided for her, and forgets what she really is. As she sings this song, it comes back to her, and in the middle of it she remembers her purpose and who she really is.

that's because the LANGUAGE ITSELF is about translating emotion to magic, beyond the fact that is literally sung computer commands. also: hymmnos the base (made up, but fully functional) language here : it sounds somewhat churchy when the nature of the language is choral (reyvateil and tower responding), the difference is while you pray for an angel to save you in the church of Christ, nothing happens. But when a Reyvateil prays to the tower ar tonelico for a guardian,. their song creates a literal guardian from the emotions of the song proccessed through the tower of ar tonelico. There's also the dichotomy between the japanese and the hymmnos in the songs, the japanese is trying to explain to US what what and why, but the hymmnos itself is a programming language for turning thoughts, hopes, and emotions into executable magic code." I need to go find the language primer site made for the at II fan repair.
@SkyKingAzure
@SkyKingAzure 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, when I got the idea that the Reyvateils were essentially programmers who knew the base codes of their respective terminals and interfaced with it using songs instead of a keyboard, it really blew me away. We know how we get when we hear certain music, imagine if _nature_ were moved in the same way that we are to music. But we _do_ know that nature does respond to music positively and negatively so Ar Tonelico would be a few steps/miles in that direction.

A fun thing to note with regards to these songs: almost all of the vocal tracks in these games are either prayers or folk songs. It really does feel like church hymns, in fact, the whole language is called Hymmnos. The world was created in a fashion similar to Tolkein's Lord of the Rings, in that it was brought about through music, though in Ar Tonelico's case, it was more like the Big Bang, and not by a creator deity and his angels. "(Singing Hill)~Harmonics TILIA~" sings an epic about the beginning of the universe and a very summarized history of the world of Ar Ciel and its use/misuse of Hymmnos.

Another great analysis of an AT song. Always glad to see you do more from this series. It's definitely interesting to see your perspective on these and I do enjoy how your perspective recontextualizes some thoughts I have about these as someone that already has all the context but never thought about in a way beyond when I first discovered its context and like I've mentioned offhand previously when I first heard these without context (I heard the music first before the games), I never thought critically about how it translated, I just knew the sounds and design appealed to me and didn't dig further into the meaning but rather waited til the actual experience to then develop my thoughts on the series' music and what it meant to me after the fact. Anyhow looking forward to your further adventures into the world of AT's music, especially if you ever get the content that wasn't included in the official games but added to the worldbuilding such as tracks from the special album releases like Ar=Ciel Ar=Dor or the Hymmnos musicals, or even the un/semi-official fan works like Hymmnos Chronicle and Paradigm Shift from Stellatram which contain some of my most favourite tracks for the series than most of what's in the main games (though a lot of the main game music is still absolutely amazing.) All that aside, on the topic of your reaction, I sorta figured with your pre-demo talk about your thoughts with the series and impression about the tracks being experimental and you having a bit of an innate resistance to them. Much of AT's music is very much so experimental and that can be uh... a bit of an acquired taste to say the least. That being said, it would be cool to see you look at some of the less popular and more contemporary tracks in the series because the games do have those that way you get a bit more of a broader view than just the super popular stuff. I would personally recommend stuff like Kazeshirube/The Wind Vane, Toki no Suna/Sands of Time, Hikari no Naka ni/Into the Light, Reisha's Lullaby, Eternally Bonded, and The Queen of the Underworld as such examples that way you're mixing things up and not repeating too much of the same style of music.

You have 3 different languages being used in this song. Japanese, Ar-Ciela (the language of the planet) and Hymmnos. I always find it impressive how you can get very close to the context and meaning behind a song, despite not having ever heard it or played the game before. It's a testament to how keen your ears are and how much you know about music. You're absolutely correct that the song goes through a lot of emotions, and that's also true in the game's story. This particular song is both a spell and a computer program. It makes the singer feel a surge of specific emotions, they sing motivated by those emotions, and cause a magical effect. But in the story, the character who's singing is feeling such strong emotions that she overpowers the programmed feelings up until the halfway point, where they synchronize. Hence, the song starts solemn and halfway through the violin drops and it becomes jubilant. And you're also correct about feeling of transformation and apotheosis in there. The purpose of the song involves transforming the singer into a different form that can interact with a god.

While I am along time fan of artone/surge concerto, I think its fair to be intimidated by it. The songs I can remember you reacting to were kind of out there and I wish you were able to start with some of the more simple ones and I think some of it is the conlang. It has this feeling of oddness which, especially true with one of the languages used in this specific song where each LETTER is tied to a specific word or emotion. It definitely feels different from Nier's conlang which is meant to simulate how the human language would evolve in thousands of years (that's what I heard anyway). So I do hope you can continue with the series' music, but I can also understand why you would feel hesitant! All the best Marco!

Finally got around to Exec_Flip_Arphage I see. 👍 You mentioned 'experimental', and for me, part of the appeal of the series' hymmnos, especially the first two games, is that it sounds so experimental, yet works. I personally found most of the third game's hymmnos to not be quite as experimental as the first two, though Arphage is one of the few that I feel is more in line with the previous games. Anyways, I appreciate that you reacted to this, and have been very respectful to the music thus far. I am also, however, just as appreciative for you saying you were, I believe, resistant towards its music and struggling to wrap your head around it, especially the more bombastic and out there pieces from what I have seen. This is one of my favourite songs in general. That classical inspired layered singing in a song with a narrative that escalates and then explodes into an energetic beat midway through, all the while using very old traditional singing styles in this otherwise very modern fusion of old, traditional and new. It's nothing alike to anything. That slow and quiet that eventually builds up and explodes into an upbeat song alone is enough to make me like it, but then it adds these classical aspects, traditional japanese vocal styles layered with accompanying vocals and even counter melodies. And then it still keeps going before finally returning back to the main theme to close the song. It's a journey. And then this very same soundtrack has XaaaCi which is basically japanese folk mixed with industrial rock. Akiko Shikata is probably the best video game composer if you were to ask me. The composition of these songs, the complexity yet still the clear vision where everything creates a proper whole together is astonishing. It might not have Hamauzu's ridiculously extended chords and occasional atonal influence, but it has far more clarity that creates a much more satisfying whole.

it's normal in the word of the games that you feel like a church, hymmnos ( both the language and the "strongest song magic" are literaly informatic comand lines to the 3 tower ( the one they are in in the game) to create something out of the reality warping power of the towers so yes hymmnos ( song) are like "prayers" the the "god" that is the tower and hymmnos ( language) is like a holly language! when akiko shitata started working on the musics of the games she had free passage to put her musical expertise in the games and was the singing voice of one reivateil in each games! I LOVE akiko shikata she is my favorite female singer and in this song there is her voice!

Hi, I'm living in Japan. I knew you from the reaction video of OP of Attack on Titan. Thank you for reacting to this song. I have been a fan of this singer (Akiko Shikata) for 15 years. I hope you enjoy other of her songs overdubbed over 100 times in a song.

I'm not entirely sure about church, but Ive heard the style is pretty similar in some songs to Bulgarian Choir singing in terms of overlapping parts and some dissonance between them. Not sure how true that is, but I can see it when listening to either. Also part of it is that the idea behind the songs is singing thoughts and emotions to create magic. Many are similar to prayers for magic or change sung to either the towers / gods or the Earth's will.

Shikata does a lot of songs in Italian in her non-game/anime work, so i wouldn't be surprised if some Operas are inspiration for her work. :) (for your own time, one of the songs i love the most from her own work is Luna Piena!) love to see non-fans getting wowed by the songs from one of my fave series, definitely want whoever is requesting these to know i appreciate them!

Every now and then I love going through your channel because your insight on the music makes me see many things I missed, specially the feelings given through the music which I am unable to identify when listening but they do make sense when pointed out. If you want more of this extremely experimental style I would recommend you to check Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE; from Ar Nosurge, which is set in the same universe as the Ar Tonelico games and it's composed as well by Akiko Shikata. It's a song that is extremely linked to the context to the point that I could understand the emotions in it thanks to the context and I would love to see your take of what the context is from the music itself.

Exa Pico music is always a ride, I think Ar Tonelico is probably more inline with your knowledge base but I'd be interested in seeing you listen to some of the music from the prequels ciel no surge and ar no surge too. Every one of the exa pico games has it's own vibe and I think each game's music reflect that.

I 100% agree that the music in the series is unique, both for better and for worse, and I'm so glad to see people listening to it and talking about it because I feel like it was a series that kind of flew under most people's radar.

"Is that normal to feel like that is something you would hear in like a church?" As someone who used to go to church with family, yes, my mom who being even more religious than me and typically have no interest in games, as i let her listen to this and she says "it sounds like hymn" and like it for the religious quality. I think this song is one of the 3 best songs (other 2 being Method Metafalica and Exec Crhonicle Key) to introduce anyone to Ar Tonelico music, especially Christian lol.

I love the fact you're covering songs with an artificial, constructed language. Moreso since it's from a relatively obscure video game where music sung drives the world. If I could make a few suggestions for other Ar Tonelico tunes: EXEC COSMOFLIPS - A prayer-like song that is repetitive, but with hints of desperation and a desire to make her fate have meaning. METHOD_HYMME_GRANZERO=SPEAR - A song sung by a Reyvatail (the songstresses of the series) that converted her feelings for her brother and the life they've lived together into a rather strong song magic. It's a bit unique with the aggressiveness of the track and the "dialect" of the region she lived in in the Con-Lang parts. METHOD_HYMMELI - Another song by the same Reyvatail of GRANZERO=SPEAR with another aggressive beat, referring back to elements of GRANZERO. Its purpose is conveying her feelings to other unique Reyvatails of her type, asking them to lend her their strength, and then channel that energy into the core needed to restart the planet. EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA - It's actually the combined form of 2 separate songs (EXEC_METAFALICA and METHOD_METAFALICA), utilized in order to repair the land the two singers live on.

I like to watch the videos, because I see music with different eyes, since I do. ( or hear it with different ears?) This reminds me of some songs from "Heilung", which are basically modern interpreted nordic chants. Maybe you'll try one or two, "Traust" is a good one. And it also reminded me of the Christmas concerts the church here does, they also use modern instruments, whats pretty impressive.

I have a suggestion for you. *Yuki Kajiura* made an ost for an anime called Madlax. There's one song for both main characters : *"Margaret"* and *"Madlax".* But the interesting part is that there is a song called *"We are one"* which blends the two songs into one. And I can't tell much more without spoiling but let's say it's relevant to the story. You should at least give it a try. Other than that, Yuki Kajiura is a musical genius who worked on countless OSTs : Noir, Mai Hime, Mai Otome, Madlax, El Cazador, Tsubasa, Sword Art Online, Demon Slayer, .hack//sign, Fate, Madoka, Kara no Kyoukai and so many more... I could recommend you dozens of songs she made which are all masterpieces.

This is one of my favorites from the third game and honestly; Ar Tonelico songs have always been complex to me. They're supposed to be sung by robotic girls who are also attuned by nature. Kinda like if Vocaloids came to life. Akiko Shikata is a magnificent singer

I've never played these three games and only own the third, but I've been dying to play them just for the soundtracks alone. If you like these, you'll love Xenogears if you haven't gotten to it. Xenogears has the greatest soundtrack to any game I've ever listened to, and is what got me into Bulgarian folk music and why I own a kalimba.

Fun note - Kokia, who sings the songs for one of the female characters in this particular iteration of the series, studied opera throught high school and college! And her voice is AMAZING! She does songs for anime I believe, too! Now, I'm not an overally emotional person but she is the only person in my life who has consistently made me cry when listening to music (specifically "Hontou no Oto"). I advise you to give her songs a listen sometime!

Something fun about ar tonelico songs is that they often have 'lyrics' that are the feelings within the song, rather than what is sung. in the case of flip arphage these lyrics are The ritual of souls is about to begin The most historic day in the world will come about Because the one girl born to save this world Will ascend to godhood today Connecting her heart with God, she'll become the new Creator Creation from a new order heralds the beginning of a time of supreme bliss Pain ends today Tomorrow, it shall turn into a world filled with hope Because the girl will grant the same amount of "happiness inhabiting this world" to everyone Spin and sing, to fuse the world into one The girl's feelings shall melt and become a lamp for all hearts Her soul shall become light and a star that brightens tomorrow And then the girl shall become the world Darkness and light shall melt into one, and become morning and night All wisdom shall flow into the girl And become the monolith to further the evolution of this world Humans, let your bodies be filled with joy tonight! Because, for every soul that you release Its energy shall turn into the energy for evolution And guide this world to a world filled with utmost happiness Seeing that, the girl shall be happy as well Because she can feel the accomplishment of her duty She can become nothingness while embracing feelings of bliss A soul that will watch over everyone's happiness forever Many blessings to the girl!
