Excited to present our guest on the show today, Mohsin Raza Khan. He is an Associate Professor at The School of International Affairs, Jindal Global University. He is a former Chevening Scholar and an FRM from GARP, NY.
Religion is a complex and varied phenomenon that has played a significant role in human history. The history of religion is difficult to trace because it has evolved over time and varies greatly across different cultures and societies. Over time, organized religions with complex belief systems and hierarchies developed, including the major world religions of today such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and more. These religions have shaped the course of human history and continue to influence the way people live and think today.
Hope you enjoy this episode.

Look the history of Assyrians and see how brutal they once were until they accepted Christianity, after which Ottomans carried out their genocide and wiped out 90% of their population just like Armenians and occupied their lands which today consists of Northeastern Syria and Northwestern Iraq (today part of Kurdistan). Btw, Kurds were also involved in the Assyrian/Armenian genocide in 1915 and then the modern Turks turned against them and have a new tussle today with Turkey + Iran vs Kurds ! Middle East was funny.

Zoroastrians, followers of an ancient Iranian faith, have faced persecution throughout history. The most significant oppression began with the rise of Islam in the 7th century CE. After Arab Muslims conquered Persia, Zoroastrians experienced forced conversions, temple destruction, and had to pay a tax called jizya in Muslim-controlled areas. This period marked a difficult chapter in their history, as they endured discrimination and violence due to their religious beliefs. Understanding this historical context is crucial to appreciate the challenges that Zoroastrians have confronted over the centuries.🙏🏼

From what i know "Das" in Hinduism is not equatable to "Slave" in other cultures. Slave was captured/traded had no free will. Das on the other hand was a volutary role taken up by individuals. You will find its description in one of Shri Rajiv Malhotra's videos talking about his book on Sanskrit Non-translatables (words). I figure "Das" is one of those words.

Middle East was fairly progressive before Islam. Do NOT forget that Islamic Prophet's first wife Khadija was an independent businesswoman and his employer as well. The Islamic prophet worked for a woman. Now we all know the condition of women in Islam.
@imran98T
@imran98T Ай бұрын
progressive is a term used by those who focus on industrialism. This means everyone should work for money. Islam tells us that women should focus on their main objective for society which is to look after the family and raise good children. If there is time and space to earn money by fulfilling that main objective then there is no problem in doing so. Such as Khadija was a widow when she was doing business. This is what they are naturally inclined to do. On the other hand, the so-called progressive community tells us to send our women to work 9-5 and serve the boos who have no responsibility for that woman. Now I know this view is pushed by the West and media so much that you guys think whoever thinks differently from it is mad. But hear me out, the majority doesn't win the truth. You need to think critically to consider something wrong. You might be brain-dead to consider that pre-Islamic Arabia was better than the Islamic Golden Age 😒

Many questions come up in this discussion : (1) while saying Jews were an advanced civilisation , can we get more info on how and why they were more advanced ? (2) while saying that scriptures represented religion and mentioning the Torah , bible , koran , Vedas , we forget that Vedas and Upanishads pre-date all other scriptures. Maybe he can throw more light on this
@k.999

I think Jews were traders so they knew about the world and what was happening all around because they used to trade. Right, Vedas and Upanishads do pre date all other scriptures but I think torahs have like the second timeline? But they like to think that torahs came before the Vedas, which is weird and curse worthy too 🤡

@Bhavani Singh Surah Al azab 33:36 36. And it becometh not a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in their affair; and whoso is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goeth astray in error manifest. Surah Al Azab 33:37 And when thou saidst unto him on whom Allah hath conferred favour and thou hast conferred favour: Keep thy wife to thyself, and fear Allah. And thou didst hide in thy mind that which Allah was to bring to light, and thou didst fear mankind whereas Allah hath a better right that thou shouldst fear Him. So when Zeyd had performed that necessary formality (of divorce) from her, We gave her unto thee in marriage, so that (henceforth) there may be no sin for believers in respect of wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have performed the necessary formality (of release) from them. The commandment of Allah must be fulfilled.

A point to consider outside what the guest said of 360 idols in the kaabah. Turn back the clock to Sumeria -sumerians had a base no. System of 60 numerals , they where fascinated by geometry ( scholars presume much of the geometric maths was exported out of the earlier Indus Saraswati civilization city states ) the Sumerians worked around a calendar - periodic flooding in dry areas is critical for crops , seasonal patterns all where cyclical & a circle noting these changes began dividing the circle , they noticed no matter the size of the circle with their base of 60 they cud equally divide it into segments it's due to them we have time measured in units of 60. Ie 60 sec , 60 Min & 12 equal divisions of a circle @ a point their maths advanced to calculate still on base 60 that the total degrees of a circle to return to the start point was 360 so the entire calendar year was 360 days divided downwards they saw these as the divine hand of the gods & Mecca was a rest station for traders with their camel caravans so like Hindus & others who travelled away from homelands they needed to placate their faith on long journeys away from home so in these resting posts that also did trade you end up with a small water hole oasis turning into a little town & grows & in Mecca because it was a important point of rest & trade many tribes of the middle eastern post Hittite era also where present & it's possible that the 360 idols in the kaabah where daily deities to mark off the days to seasonal changes bec these dessert regions do get very cold winters & those agrarian societies where highly dependent on weather & seasons given that Arabia largely remained undeveloped due to it being mostly dessert - it had very little to offer PPL to live in such extreme conditions so I'm not saying that it is 360 idols for 360 days or is it 360 tribal idols - it cud be of both ? But worth looking into.

@@kaushikchakraborty2271 Hazrat Aisha’s age This hadith cannot be true for several reasons. First, the Prophet could not have gone against the Quran to marry a physically and intellectually immature child. Secondly, the age of Hazrat Aisha can be easily calculated from the age of her elder sister Hazrat Asma who was 10 years older than Hazrat Aisha. Waliuddin Muhammad Abdullah Al-Khateeb al Amri Tabrizi the famous author of Mishkath, in his biography of narrators (Asma ur Rijal), writes that Hazrat Asma died in the year 73 Hijri at the age of 100, ten or twelve days after the martyrdom of her son Abdullah Ibn Zubair. It is common knowledge that the Islamic calendar starts from the year of the Hijrah or the Prophet’s migration from Mecca to Medina. Therefore, by deducting 73, the year of Hazrat Asma’s death, from 100, her age at that time, we can easily conclude that she was 27 years old during Hijra.This puts the age of Hazrat Aisha at 17 during the same period. As all biographers of the Prophet agree that he consummated his marriage with Hazrat Aisha in the year 2 Hijri it can be conclusively said that she was 19 at that time and not nine as alleged in the aforementioned hadiths.

@@andreiyevanovYou want evidence ? Here it is : The earliest surviving South Asian epigraphy, the mid 3rd Century BCE, Edicts of Ashoka, in Greek, Aramaic and Prakrit, independently identify obligations to slaves and hired workers, later prohibiting the trading of Slaves within the Empire. Dāsa are offered in examples of Pāṇini's, probably mid 4th century BCE, Sanskrit grammar, the Aṣṭādhyāyī, e.g. 2.3.69 "lusting for the slave", 2.4.24 "the concourse of ladies and slaves". The term dāsa and dāsyu in Vedic and other ancient Indian literature has been interpreted by as "servant" or "slave", but others have contested such meaning. The term dāsa in the Rigveda, has been also been translated as an enemy, but overall the identity of this term remains unclear and disputed among scholars. According to Scott Levi, it was likely an established institution in ancient India by the start of the common era based on texts such as the Arthashastra, the Manusmriti and the Mahabharata. Slavery was "likely widespread by the lifetime of the Buddha and perhaps even as far back as the Vedic period", however he elaborates that the association of the Vedic Dasa with 'slaves' is "problematic and likely to have been a later development". Upinder Singh states that the Rig Veda is familiar with slavery, referring to enslavement in course of war or as a result of debt. She states that the use of dasa and dasi in later times were used as terms for male and female slaves. In contrast, Suvira Jaiswal states that dasa tribes were integrated in the lineage system of Vedic traditions, wherein dasi putras could rise to the status of priests, warriors and chiefs as shown by the examples of Kaksivant Ausija, Balbutha, Taruksa, Divodasa and others. Some scholars contest the earlier interpretations of the term dasa as "slave", with or without "racial distinctions". According to Indologists Stephanie W. Jamison and Joel P. Brereton, known for their recent translation of the Rigveda, the dasa and dasyu are human and non-human beings who are enemies of Arya. These according to the Rigveda, state Jamison and Brereton, are destroyed by the Vedic deity Indra. The interpretation of "dasas as slaves" in the Vedic era is contradicted by hymns such as 2.12 and 8.46 that describe "wealthy dasas" who charitably give away their wealth. Similarly, state Jamison and Brereton, the "racial distinctions" are not justified by the evidence. According to the Indologist Thomas Trautmann, the relationship between the Arya and Dasa appears only in two verses of the Rigveda, is vague and unexpected since the Dasa were "in some ways more economically advanced" than the Arya according to the textual evidence. According to Asko Parpola, the term dasa in ancient Indian texts has proto-Saka roots, where dasa or daha simply means "man". Both "dasa" and "dasyu" are uncommon in Indo-Iranian languages (including Sanskrit and Pali), and these words may be a legacy of the PIE root "*dens-", and the word "saka" may have evolved from "dasa", states Parpola. According to Micheline Ishay - a professor of human rights studies and sociology, the term "dasa" can be "translated as slave". The institution represented unfree labor with fewer rights, but "the supposed slavery in [ancient] India was of mild character and limited extent" like Babylonian and Hebrew slavery, in contrast to the Hellenic world. The "unfree labor" could be of two types in ancient India: the underadsatva and the ahitaka, states Ishay. A person in distress could pledge themselves for work leading to underadsatava, while under ahitaka a person's "unfree labor" was pledged or mortgaged against a debt or ransom when captured during a war. These forms of slavery limited the duration of "unfree labor" and such a slave had rights to their property and could pass their property to their kin, states Ishay. The term dasa appears in early Buddhist texts, a term scholars variously interpret as servant or slave. Buddhist manuscripts also mention kapyari, which scholars have translated as a legally bonded servant (slave). According to Gregory Schopen, in the Mahaviharin Vinaya, the Buddha says that a community of monks may accept dasa for repairs and other routine chores. Later, the same Buddhist text states that the Buddha approved the use of kalpikara and the kapyari for labor in the monasteries and approved building separate quarters for them. Schopen interprets the term dasa as servants, while he interprets the kalpikara and kapyari as bondmen and slave respectively because they can be owned and given by laity to the Buddhist monastic community. According to Schopen, since these passages are not found in Indian versions of the manuscripts, but found in a Sri Lankan version, these sections may have been later interpolations that reflect a Sri Lankan tradition, rather than early Indian. The discussion of servants and bonded labor is also found in manuscripts found in Tibet, though the details vary. The discussion of servant, bonded labor and slaves, states Scopen, differs significantly in different manuscripts discovered for the same Buddhist text in India, Nepal and Tibet, whether they are in Sanskrit or Pali language. These Buddhist manuscripts present a set of questions to ask a person who wants to become a monk or nun. These questions inquire if the person is a dasa and dasi, but also ask additional questions such as "are you ahrtaka" and "are you vikritaka". The later questions have been interpreted in two ways. As "are you one who has been seized" (ahrtaka) and "are you one who has been sold" (vikritaka) respectively, these terms are interpreted as slaves. Alternatively, they have also been interpreted as "are you doubtless" and "are you blameworthy" respectively, which does not mean slave. Further, according to these texts, Buddhist monasteries refused all servants, bonded labor and slaves an opportunity to become a monk or nun, but accepted them as workers to serve the monastery. The Indian texts discuss dasa and bonded labor along with their rights, as well as a monastic community's obligations to feed, clothe and provide medical aid to them in exchange for their work. This description of rights and duties in Buddhist Vinaya texts, says Schopen, parallel those found in Hindu Dharmasutra and Dharmasastra texts. The Buddhist attitude to servitude or slavery as reflected in Buddhist texts, states Schopen, may reflect a "passive acceptance" of cultural norms of the Brahmanical society midst them, or more "justifiably an active support" of these institutions. The Buddhist texts offer "no hint of protest or reform" to such institutions, according to Schopen. Kautilya's Arthashastra dedicates the thirteenth chapter on dasas, in his third book on law. This Sanskrit document from the Maurya Empire period (4th century BCE) has been translated by several authors, each in a different manner. Shamasastry's translation of 1915 maps dasa as slave, while Kangle leaves the words as dasa and karmakara. According to Kangle's interpretation, the verse 13.65.3-4 of Arthasastra forbids any slavery of "an Arya in any circumstances whatsoever", but allows the Mlecchas to "sell an offspring or keep it as pledge". Patrick Olivelle agrees with this interpretation. He adds that an Arya or Arya family could pledge itself during times of distress into bondage, and these bonded individuals could be converted to slave if they committed a crime thereby differing with Kangle's interpretation. According to Kangle, the Arthasastra forbids enslavement of minors and Arya from all four varnas and this inclusion of Shudras stands different from the Vedic literature. Kangle suggests that the context and rights granted to dasa by Kautilya implies that the word had a different meaning than the modern word slave, as well as the meaning of the word slave in Greek or other ancient and medieval civilizations. According to Arthashastra, anyone who had been found guilty of nishpatitah (ruined, bankrupt, a minor crime) may mortgage oneself to become dasa for someone willing to pay his or her bail and employ the dasa for money and privileges. The term dasa in Indic literature when used as a suffix to a bhagavan (deity) name, refers to a pious devotee. The Buddhist Vanijja Sutta, AN 5:177 listing slave trading to be one of the five wrong livelihood a layperson should not engage in : "Monks, a lay follower should not engage in five types of business. Which five? Business in weapons, business in human beings, business in meat, business in intoxicants, and business in poison. These are the five types of business that a lay follower should not engage in." Late classical Hindu Dharmaśāstra, would specify who can be enslaved, the treatment of enslaved, and acceptable forms of Vishti (forced labour), by caste; a theme later medieval commentaries, of the like of Devaṇabhaṭṭa's Smṛticandrikā, would refine.
